IMPORTANT distinction: A clutch will try to re-engage right away, whereas a shear pin is a "Bang and done" and will not restart until the obstruction is cleared, components inspected and shear pin replaced. Think of a shear pin as and Emergency Stop button- especially important on an inertia implement (something that will keep moving after loss of tractor PTO drive input). Brush hog comes to mind. You don't want (potentially damaged) blades to keep spinning or half a PTO shaft flopping around, etc. On a driven, non-inertia implement like a rototiller that is expected to repeatedly encounter high resistance that then breaks free (clumps, rocks etc) clutches are ideal. Simple and informative video. Including the WHY for each type of protective device would be helpful, so I've added my opinion here in the comments. Keep up the good work!

Well done, O&D. Good explanation and visual on how slip-clutch and shear-bolt systems operate. New tractor owners want a tractor that is invincible and want it to be able to do any job asked of it. Some new tractor owners may not realize the various shaft protection systems available, however, may only be considering cost/price (which makes sense). The slip clutch system usually cost more than a standard shear-bolt system therefore new owners settle on the lowest cost. After experiencing several shear-bolt breaks I've learned. Thanks much for this video, G. As PaK mentioned below, hearing it again keeps us up to date.

Go the safety clutch. The shear bolt on my PTO didn't shear so now I have to put a gasket kit through the hydraulic pump on my John Deere.

What kind of sheer bolt pto is that? The majority of sheer bolts that I have seen run through the shaft.

How's she goin'? Great description of the two PTO drives. Once I broke a shear bolt on my snow blower and I only had a grade 8 bolt to replace it with. Before the day as over I also had a broken chain too!!!LOL Take care now!!!

Wow so you are telling me I can slip the clutch by hand? Will that get rid of whatever might be causing the clutches to sieze or bind up? I am going to come back here if anyone can answer this question, I saved this video to watch later. Also if you can slip the clutch by hand, just think of the time and effort of not having to get on and off the tractor, start the tractor up, put on the brake etc....

I think if it is seized up, might need to loosen and engage to unseize. I honestly seldom use it.
