The first knife I had was a slip joint and it folded up on my finger while I was using it. I still have the scar to remind me to never carry a slip joint for anything more than opening letters. I don't trust them, plus I hate feeling like my finger nail is about to bend backwards while opening.

I actually carry a fixed blade. That being said. There's a reason slip joints have been around so long. By far some of the best pocket knives out there.

Slip joint, and I have been EDCing a slip joint Laguiole (Honoré Durand) knife with awl and corkscrew (13cm) since last year.

Slip joint for this size knife. Loving my Tactile Bexar Magnacut with Ultem scales. Once I go to a bigger knife then locking. Current favorite is my Hogue Deka Wharncliffe 3.25" or Spydy Native 5 Salt

Slip joints are all I carry. Legal almost everywhere, great patterns, can do most everything a locking knife can and I never get strange looks when I bust out a slip joint versus when I carried a Peña.

I carry both but my slippie is usually pretty small. Either a Spyderco Roadie or Case Peanut. Both have their uses.

Jack Wolf all day! The Workhorse ain't too shabby but I'm picking a Jack Wolf slipjoint 9 times out of 10. Not only are they conversation starters, but they are beautifully functional also. I'm always looking for tasks to tend to with my JWK Laid Back Jack.

Honestly i would choose both, but i love that crazy clip point on that slip joint (hey that rhymes😂😂) so I'd probably carry that more. Plus theres just something so nice about carrying a traditional slip joint that you dont get from modern knives. As @shamanllama said there's a reason slip joints have been around so long, and ill add to it by saying there's a reason why many old-timers still carry them.

Easy answer. Modern traditional. I don't trust slip joints. I probably would not pick the Workhorse, but that's because I am not a fan of front flippers.

Pocket clips on those knives kill it for me. Same for the Pena X-Series - would be a huge improvement if they just left them off and kept a more traditional look. Plus they're terrible for lefties.

True story alert. A good friend told me recently that his son cut his pinky finger off while using a slip joint knife. It was hanging by a flap of skin and was able to be reattached (thank God) and it is getting blood flow. The doctors are optimistic about it, but he probably won't have any sort of normal movement with it. Apparently, he was attempting to deflate a rubber basketball and when he went to stab it, the knife buckled and closed shut on his little finger. I don't blame the knife, because there's things you just shouldn't do, and that goes for any sort of tool. I carry a modern slip joint daily and am very careful what I do and do not do with it. I also carry a frame lock or an Axis lock knife. With those, I am a lot more confident completing certain tasks.

I wouldn't even feel comfortable stabbing a basketball even with a locking knife. The only exception is a cold steel triad lock. You never know what forces your applying to the lock with that kind of momentum
