Love your videos. What is the factor that determines which AWD car can and cannot succeed in the three roller test? (I'm asking from mechanical point, ignoring things such as Traction Control, etc.) I.e. most of these cars use multiplate clutch; when only one wheel has traction, is the clutch slipping? E.g. why can Subaru's with multiplate clutch and VDC succeed, yet other cars (e.g. Sportage) that use multiplate clutch and VDC not succeed?
@4x4.tests.on.rollers5 жыл бұрын
Traction control cannot be ignored cause in fact that is one of two factors. There are many cars which has the same awd system (mechanics), only software is different. Software means clutch operation and traction control operation. And their correlation.

Why exactly does the Merc fail with only front left on the ground? And fun question..is it a given front right would perform the same?
@4x4.tests.on.rollers4 жыл бұрын
Merc has 31/69 torque split, that is performance awd system, not traction awd system, it doesn't send much power to the front. It would be the same with any front wheel.

@@4x4.tests.on.rollers So what's the difference between 2:01 win ESP off one rear wheel on ground and 3:20 total fail with one front wheel on the ground no matter the ESP? That 4 Matic can distribute power to a single rear wheel but not to the front? And how does that relate to torque split? Means it actually does send power to front left but not enough? How come? Please lighten me up. It looks like the software doesn't care about the relative speed of ground and vehicle and just looks for the revs.
@4x4.tests.on.rollers4 жыл бұрын
@@wreckage-vs5jv Imagine it this way - basically rear axle gets 69% of torque, so each rear wheel gets 34,5%. At the same time front axle gets 31%, so each front wheel gets 15,5%. Of course ESP/TC is changing this split by intervention of brakes but it can't change it to the level where one front wheel will get enough torque to move the car forward. Here you can see this Merc with front wheels on rollers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKK9p2B5e6-rp8k Notice that there is much less wheelspin than during the test with rear wheels on rollers.
@wreckage-vs5jv4 жыл бұрын
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers I see. So more wheelspin always indicates where more torque can be send? And the 75 nm, 15 per cent of the Mercedes' 500 nm is not enough to move the car right?
@4x4.tests.on.rollers4 жыл бұрын
@@wreckage-vs5jv Less wheelspin = more torque. The more is the resistance the more torque you can apply. We are not talking about the torque of the engine but torque split of awd system. In such test cars need just a little bit of torque from the engine. For example - max engine torque is 500 Nm but during the test only 100 Nm is needed. So 69 Nm goes to the back and 31 Nm to the front (of course I omit the transmission, gearings to make it clear to understand).

People like to laugh but most don’t have any idea what’s going on 🙄 They will do ok on slippery surfaces anyway, not even SUV-s are for off road except the 4x4 so that’s not a problem. Mercedes seems more rear biased which is more interesting if you want more agility. Anyway the 4matic is about how you sent power to front or rear. The rear diff is connected through a clutch and I think the front as well so they can control exactly how much power you send to each axle. From this perspective it’s a very good system. Probably the kia awd is ok as well. So mechanically there is no problem. The reason why they failed the one wheel traction test is because of traction control left/right. Both cars have oped differentials for F and R axles as most of the cars have (except optionally selected for a rear lsd or special model. Alfa romeo uses lsd as standard I think). So to send power left or right you rely on traction control which apply brakes on the wheel that spins. In these cases the TC didn’t work too well. Newer cars usually have improved this system and it works better , anyway it’s not that bad, it won’t affect the dynamics the cars will be ok. It can even be fixed with a software patch if they want to do it (probably they won’t even bother:)) With a rear LSD you would have no problem with all wheels on rollers except one of the rear wheels. An lsd is the only way to improve rear traction for faster turn exit. But this will cost you some extra money.
@4x4.tests.on.rollers5 жыл бұрын
Mercedes has center differential, no clutches. Kia has clutch pack to power front wheels. And it is not the matter of traction control left/right in this case, but torque on front axle (for example Porsche 911 is not even able to move the car forward even if both front wheels have grip).
@rotorblade95085 жыл бұрын
duszaniespokojna - 4x4 tests on rollers I’ve checked the latest 4matic+ and it uses clutches that connect rear diff anyway but I don’t know what system is in this case. Both systems can send torque to the axle that has grip so they are ok. Kia system is then similar to bmw xdrive. There is definitely torque available on front axle but the motion goes to the spinning wheel that has no traction then obviously no torque is transmitted to the front. But if the traction control would brake the spinning wheel the car will move
@4x4.tests.on.rollers5 жыл бұрын
@@rotorblade9508 Actually this E43 doesn't have 4Matic+ but 4Matic (AMG Performance 4MATIC Permanent All-Wheel Drive). Some sources indeed say there is planetary center differential with multi-plate clutch limited slip device, but that's definitely not lockable, probably mechanical (not electronically controlled). Torque always go to the front, but I don't know how much in such case. System in Kia is not only similar to xDrive, but in fact it is the same - Actimax from Magna Powertrain.
