I am a CFI and I was looking for videos to help my students understand the difference between crabbing, a side-slip, and a forward-lip...this vide is absolutely one of the best I've come across. Excellent job, easy to understand and only 5+ minutes. THANK YOU!

So far, out of the many explanations I’ve seen on slips this is the one I understood. The combination of visual and verbal explanation nailed it for me. Short, to the point. Bravo!!

Great explanation and to the point. I hear this is one of the questions asked in the verbal CFI ridecheck at flight schools......the difference between slip and skid and when they're appropriate or inappropriate to use.

Can anyone answer this question? Can you do a side slip safely with full flaps on a Cessna 152?

1:50 a normal landing with side slip that is. Indicating when and how much control inputs for timing would have been helpful.

So was air canada flight 173 a forward slip and not a side slip?

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. I believe it's Air Canada 143, the "Gimli Glider" of 1983 you are wondering about. The unpowered 767 was coming in high, so the pilot put in a forward slip to quickly lose altitude without significantly increasing airspeed. In the Mayday TV episode about this incident, the 767 approaches in a pronounced wing low crabbed attitude with the pilot pretty much looking out the side window until just before touchdown.

You mean flight 143 not 173. I thought it looked like a side slip based on the animation I’ve seen. And also in the Nat Geo video they say it’s a side slip.
