(14:20) Wait, wouldn't the number of bars be rounded up? If you did the if you calc for #7 bar, you will see 3.276/.601 = 5.45. If you take traditional rounding methods, wouldn't you have too little of bar? I would make the number of bars 6 in that case. Or are safety factors assumed to be soaking up the logical need for rounding up? Would make work a bit simpler to simply round normally, but until I know more, I am going to round up all the time in that scenario. Maybe that mystery phi/diameter symbol does the safety factor? In the end it looks like the numbers worked out though after the check, so it should be okay as long as that check is done I would guess. Also, wouldn't "d" technically change with the height of the beam and the rebar cover? I see that this was good enough for starting with only paper on hand, but wouldn't you want to check the calcs with that new "d" value at least? I would think, in this case with the #8 bar and 1" rebar cover, that we would see d=19.875 ... Yes, I know, small difference, but I am an Excel lover, and these technicalities are something that change the approach to formulas, so I was curious if I was right there. Not really intending to correct, just looking for understanding. Another thing, regarding "b" I am a little foggy on that value as well. Is that the beam width, or more or less a center of bar width end to end? The manuals are expensive, but with all the ambiguity out there... might be a good idea to invest in the SERM (Structural Engineering Reference Manual) at this point xD Great video! Mostly designer by trade for 7 years here turning into more EIT roles, and this is a welcome refresher! Thanks a bunch!
@Sulimankhanacademy4 жыл бұрын
Yes dear, everything you said is ok, you can do rounding of figures etcs, The video provides the method as needed in exams, otherwise I recommend softwares for design purposes,
@davidr29434 жыл бұрын
@@Sulimankhanacademy So in the exam, they really look for the ability to stay within the checks then? Seems like things like number of bar, in this case, is somewhat subjective as to the methodology. One of my biggest problems is being quick during a test. During work I do great because I can be exact by building an excel sheet. So is, in your opinion, the main thing the checks and methodology to the detail I describe can be subjective? If so, I would probably do it like you to save time along the way of getting to an answer while doing it long hand. Again, great video. Really was nice to have a break down. I bet a lot of people appreciate it! :)

Second question, how to determine the diameter of the steel bar? How did you come up with the 0.5inches as half of the diameter of the bar? Thank you
@Sulimankhanacademy6 жыл бұрын
Steel bars are available with different diameter..the diameter of steel bar is always written on its end.... I have assumed 1 inch dia so its half should be 0.5 inch
@davidr29434 жыл бұрын
#3 bar = 3/8" dia, #4 bar = 4/8" or 1/2" dia, #5 bar = 5/8"... etc. Basically, an 1/8" for every No (#) of bar is the diameter. That is probably the explanation you were looking for a year ago. :)

@davidcivil16514 жыл бұрын
Dr Sb, nobody can answer you query. You said your column is 9 by 9 without concret. How a column can be without concret? 2) how can I know your beam length? 3) column can be designed after knowing the load of slab and beams. You will design a column to support your beam and slabs load not designing the beam for column.
