Slo mo shotgun impact - Pigeons

Understanding the concept of "lead" when shooting a shotgun can be difficult to grasp. In this film we slow the action down. It allows the viewer to see the shot being thrown out in front of a fast moving woodpigeon. The bird then flies through the cloud of pellets. Often the shot can fall behind the quarry because the shooter doesn't allow for the speed of the bird . Why shoot pigeons?
The woodpigeon is recognised as the UK’s number one agricultural pest and causes millions of pounds of damage (AHDB consultation 10-40% loss in yield. Equivalent loss of £125/ha for Oil Seed Rape, £250/ha for peas, £350-£1250/ha for brassicas) to agricultural crops every year including cereals, brassicas, oilseed rape, peas and salad crops. Pigeon damage reduces the yield, quality, appearance and ultimately the saleability of the crop. Pigeons can also cause damage in gardens and allotments - pecking at the leaves and ripping off portions, often leaving just the stalks and larger leaf veins. They may also attack and strip buds, leaves and fruits off trees and bushes.
The UK woodpigeon population was last estimated at 5.4 million pairs in 2009. Densities of wood pigeon are the highest in Eastern England, coinciding with the highest concentration of horticultural production.
Wild pigeon (game) is natural and free range, and it is one of the healthiest meats

Tried something similar with clays when digital video came out. With the clay in the frame you could see the shot leave the barrel and make its way to the target and eventually collide or miss (usually behind). It was highly illuminating. By swinging through the target we were giving "lead" without us realising it. Your film is excellent.

Hi - It was the sony z5 but it has what's called a "smooth slow record" mode. It's very light hungry and a bright day like we had makes for some good images. What is fun is that you can set the trigger for recording at either the end, or the begining of the action. So I only hit record when I knew I had a good shot - took some getting used to!

Good one Andy. In England wood pigeons are so common and in Malta my country they are so rare. In my 31 years of hunting I never had the chance to shot one. It is recorded but very rare. Well next time shot a few more on my behalf.

Hi - We spoke to Andy and he says that it's more about the speed at which he pushes through the bird with the gun than the lead. So @ 20 yards he'll put the gun 6 inches infront of the bird - @ 50 yards he'll also give it 6 inches, but he'll be moving the gun much faster. I hope that helps.

Nobody has ever really claimed a vegan diet is healthier. They'd be laughed at if they did. It's not. Obviously, vegans avoid all the nasty PLANT-DERIVED chemicals in sausages and burgers, but then so do meat eaters who don't eat fake meat. There are no vegan indigenous peoples in the world, and never have been. Starving yourself of animal products is simply not survivable without modern farming to artificially keep you alive. Personally, I'm getting sick of vegans taking the moral high ground, while they suckle at the teats of our generosity. We keep them alive when nature would single them out for extinction. I do some waterfowl hunting and from my experience the shot will pass through the bird, I've never had a problem with pellets in my meat before (knock on wood). Its the law where I hunt to use non-toxic steel shot, but I don't think eating meat that lead shot has passed through could do much harm either.

It doesn’t. When hunting dove with 7 1/2 lead shot sometimes one or two of the BB’s stay in the bird’s breast (edible part). You must remove them before cooking it and the rest is fine. Several people have done studies and it doesn’t cause harm. Just have to make sure you remove the BB’s
