@@aerialpunk I've noticed how Sloan is very hit and miss with all their songs and albums. I hear a lot of "filler" tracks... but when they're on the mark with certain songs, they straight up NAIL it. First time I even heard of Sloan was in 1998 while stationed in Korea. I had went into the army that last September in 1997, and I had enlisted to go to Korea as my first assignment. My 20th birthday was in June and I recieved a box from my father. Inside was a VHS tape full of music videos that he had recorded off of this Canadian rock channel he could pick up with his Lonestar sattelite that played nothing but music videos and live performances... and a few commercials here and there, of course The first video on the tape was RUSH Closer To The Heart, then followed by this group called Sloan that I never heard of before. As soon as the part where the drums enters, I was like "Daaaaaaamn..." and even more so when I first heard the vocals. But the part that gives me goosebumps is at 0:55 when he sings "at the heart of the..." its the way the bass guitar goes from just riding that B note playing a strsight 8th note rhythm,,to playing the same chord progression in the same rhythm as the guitars for 2 measures... then returns back to the B using the straight 8th mother rhythm.... THAT IS A POWERFUL MOVE to make that change. It really helps accentuate that vocal line as well Another psrt that gets me is at 1:20 how the rest of the band does a sort of volume fade, except for the one guitar where it play as that brief rhythm part... that's badass. I sometimes like to play it on my SG using my fingertips instead of the pick. It sounds very AC/DC like that and even a little bit like Pete Townshend playing Who Are You

This band! This album, too. The algorithm is there: 3 guitars and a drummer. 4 artists. 4 vocalists. All 4 gifted on their main instruments and interchangeable. Students of the Beatles and other monster rock bands that came before. Much like the Hip, though, the US market remained elusive throughout their rise and eventual conclusion. As a Canuck, I love playing this song and others for American friends. The groove is immediate and the hooks undeniable. How come I’ve never heard of these guys, says everyone.

I grew up in Albany, NY and had the good fortune to interview Sloan for our local college radio station (while still in high school!) in 1993, when they still had a U.S. label promoting them. I never thought the band would evolve and get better with each passing album, but here I am still rocking out to Sloan - and with every album of theirs in my possession. I would say that Sloan have a cult following in the United States. Every time I've seen them in LA, San Francisco or NYC, they usually had about 200-400 fans in attendance. And the majority of them grew up in places like Buffalo, Albany or Detroit where Sloan actually got some radio play. Can't wait to hopefully see them live again some time post-pandemic!

To me, quite remeniscent of two different British music scenes; 90s Britpop, Pulp, the Verve, maybe Gorrillaz but also with a healthy dollop of a 60s sound, Kinks, the Jam. @@LG_7984 No. That's just what people like to say. Canadian bands and solo artists make it huge too. They weren't huge because they were at their height during the grunge era and they switched things up, not following the easily-sellable grunge sound. The funny thing is their first album is a lot more grunge. That's what got attention in the first place. American record companies started frothing at the mouth seeing this new band doing the grunge thing, then when Sloan put out their second album, it wasn't grunge. Back then the internet wasn't a thing. If you wanted to be big, you needed record companies promoting you. Nobody was going to be spending too much time and money on a band not doing grunge then.
