A slogan-chant-battle cry that has dominated the airwaves and the social space. Its intention is very clear but the facts of it all remain shrouded in mystery. Is it an organization, a philosophy, a call to arms, a call for justice, or all of the above? Used and obscured by all sides to mean whatever they want it to mean, it has illuminated, excited and exacerbated the multiple segregated fault lines that corrupt of our way of life. Will this be a passing slogan used to patronize and move on? Or will we realize a bloodless revolution by changing the laws and mechanics that allow unarmed citizens to be slain by peace officers who lie beyond the arm of the same justice they are sworn to uphold?
“Jazz music is the perfect metaphor for democracy,” says Wynton Marsalis. At a time when America-and indeed, the whole world-finds itself at a crossroads, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer has been inspired to write a poignant and buoyant work, “The Democracy! Suite,” which proves that the joy and beauty of jazz can bring us all closer together.

Dan Nimmer on piano gets a sound like a Horowitz; Walter Blanding's titan tenor sound reminds you of Sam Rivers; Obed Calvaire on drums plays with the subtle brightness and lightness of a young Pete La Rocca; and Wynton Marsalis has achieved a sound and approach no one else ever has. Superlative swing acoustic jazz and instrumental sounds meet in a performance that evokes the full spectrum of jazz from it's distant beginning to the internet age. If this is how jazz intends to kick off a new decade, we must be in for a Roaring Twenties Part 2, worthy of Armstrong and Ellington.

Well, I guess there is nothing contradictory in being a great musician and going along with racial spoil seeking. I can respect the music without respecting the man much.

Black Lives Matter! ALL LIVES MATTERS. It hope after 90 years that is what I understand Jazz was. All LIVES MATTER SINCE HUMANITY HAS NO COLOUR. The term black is still misused: GOOD LUCK WITH THAT. You can as well say BLACK MUSIC MATTERS OR JAZZ MATTERS.
