Twycross Zoo Chimpanzee Integration: Jambo's Response to Newcomer

Tommy was sitting by the window. Jambo approached, and I wondered what was going to happen. Tommy turned around to face the alpha male. Jambo just sat down peacefully in front of the newcomer, and then something great happened: Tommy extended his arm towards Jambo, and Jambo reassured him by touching his hand. It was such a great moment between those two. Jomar came into the mix and started grooming Jambo. Tommy left at that point to go into the other room. Kibali joined Jambo and Jomar. A bit later, Jomar moved, and Kibali continued to groom Jambo. Josie had a look at them grooming each other. A few close-ups of Jambo at the end.
Tommy kept himself still out of the way at feeding time. I'm sure this will ease as he's only just been integrated and he has to find his place in the hierarchy.

Hairless Chimp Jambo, the alpha male was born at Twycross Zoo in England. He has had alopecia, a form of hair loss since his youth. He was born on June 9, 1982.
In November 2018, Jambo lost his ear, possibly due to an accidental fight with his mother. Attempts to reattach it with skin glue failed as he continued to pick on it. In October 2022, he also lost a toe, with the cause unknown but possibly related to fights and agitation during mating season.
In 2018, the chimpanzees received a new habitat called "Chimpanzee Eden." It spans 1,160 square meters and includes two seven-meter-high indoor spaces connected to a large outdoor area with climbing frames and huts.

Looked like there were some low vocalizations and breathy panting from Tommy (usually laughter), and playfaces on both. Helpful, since it seemed Tommy was making some self-soothing hand gestures as Jambo came over. Poor guy was nervous. Can't blame him. I hope Tommy gets some grooming, too.

Jambo had alopecia since his youth. He grew up with his mum Coco who was the oldest chimpanzee in Europe, and brothers and sisters. Peter, Jambo's first son got moved to Scotland this year ( 2024). Jomar, born on December 28, 1990 is still with Jambo in the same habitat which is called Chimpanzee Eden. Jambo's journey has seen moments of challenge, such as the loss of his ear in November 2018, believed to have occurred accidentally during a group altercation. Twycross Zoo made efforts to reattach his ear using skin glue, but unfortunately, Jambo's persistent picking resulted in complete loss.
