I'm austrian - living very close to the slovenian border - and I started to learn slovenian a few months ago (just a little bit) but it was so hard because I couldn't find good videos. There are very good videos for learning spanish but none for slovenian. Your simple videos help me more than beginner language courses you can buy on Amazon - here I remember a lot more. Hope you continue your little course ;-) PS: would be interested in how many slovenes speak german nowadays. Whenever I meet older people in slovenia they speak german (many of them learned it at school) but I'm not sure if there are many younger slovenes who speak german(?) Today you learn english and later french at "high school" someone told me(?) And what films do they show on TV in slovenia... english ones with slovenian subtitles? :-)
@SandraPotisek
@SandraPotisek 5 жыл бұрын
Yay, I'm so happy to hear that! I'll have lots more videos coming up. ☺️ A lot of younger people still take German. It really depends on what foreign language classes are available at a particular high school, to be fair. Mine for example only had German as an option for the second foreign language, so the whole high school learned German. But many high schools have more options now. Apart from German, Spanish, French and Italian are most common, I'd say. It's a personal preference if there's more to choose from. Yeah, most movies shown on the TV over here are American with Slovenian subtitles. They're never synchronised, apart from animated movies/series for little kids.
@patrick.991
@patrick.991 5 жыл бұрын
@@SandraPotisek thank you, interesting to know. Here in Austria everything is synchronized and in german. Our common foreign languages apart from english are french, italian and sometimes spanish. In secondary modern school we had the chance to learn slovene but not many did that. I'm often hiking in the area around the border (Radlje, Muta) so I'm very interested in slovenia at the moment. Looking forward to your videos :)

I really loved this video. I found it today, and I find many parallels to my native language, Spanish. the c letter of the word caplja sounds like a Spanish CH (although the sound is harder than an English SH--as in the word she, I find it is softer than the CH sound even in English, in the word chinese, for example). I loved the lesson, the Slovene language is not only beautiful, but fascinating!

Thank you so much for this! It is so much easier to learn than I had anticipated even by this impression since the glyph- and sound-set is so similar, but yet much more practical and (not to deride, but rather praise) simpler than Russian (which I had studied for some brief time). Since it's close to the time - vesel božič! Pedantic Edit: The symbol over š,č, and ž is called a Caron (inverted circumflex) en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caron

Ura (clock / watch) is "Uhr" in German (from Latin / Italian "(h)ora)"), and both "Kamera" and "Fotoapparat" (slightly different spelling) exist in German with the same meanings. Though "Kamera" is also being applied to still cameras more and more. And lastly, "Drache" means both dragon and kite (the device, not the bird) in German.

Does the ć exist in Slovenian at all? In looking at Slovenian football I am seeing some player names end in ć rather č, but I read somewhere that ć is only in other Slavic languages. Is this due to mutiple ethnicities in the country? I have been playing Football Manager as FC Koper and this is something I have been wondering about for a while. Been watching Slovenian language videos on YT and thought it couldn't hurt to ask and see if someone can answer. Is it possibly just errors on the website I find these player's names written? Example: Dejan Djermanović on wikipedia. Thanks, in advance.
@SandraPotisek

No, ć does not exist in the Slovene language, however we have a big diaspora of Bosnians and Serbians in Slovenia - their last names most often end with -ić.

@@SandraPotisek Hvala. When I play Football Manager I really do try to explore the places where I find myself in game, so this helps a lot. I'm a native Hungarian living in Hungary. I work as a software developer, I have university degree in business informatics. I'm very fluent in English and I can speak some basic Russian and Chinese. I have a driving license and a car. My income is average and I could have a fulfilling life here, but here in Hungary we have no basic human rights. Me as a homosexual I can't officially marry a man and adopt kids. Since I want to have a family one day in my own way, I have to leave. Slovenia is my plan, since they have basic human rights like LGBTQ rights, and they seem to be very safe and welcoming. I hope one day when I move there, they will welcome and accept me. I will do my very best to learn their beautiful Slavic language. 🤗

To me Slovenian pronounciation just widely seems like most other European languages. The only one I know with much different pronounciation is English. English sounds really offbeat compared to other European languages. I only know that in English, a is spoken as [a] or [e], e as [i], i as [ai], o as [ou] or [a] and u as [a], where in (most) other European languages it's just [a], [e], [i], [o], [u]. This also partially appears in English dialects.

Thanks for your input, but at this stage of learning, I really don't think confusing beginners with such things is the smartest. And besides, I'm trying to teach people how to function in the real world, not to pass a grammar test. This is the most common pronunciation I've been hearing all my life. I've never heard anyone pronounce it with a narrow e.

@@SandraPotisek Heh well I am pretty sure the second 'e' is the narrow one. Well that's fine, I only think you should maybe choose one word that actually has only open 'e' in correct slovene, e.g. odeja, interpretacija (even though the second word isn't the best slovene word) but off course they are only beginners so not a big deal.

@@saralampret9694 I was choosing random words that start with the letter I was pronouncing. Elektrika was just the first that popped into my head. :)

I want to go back to our original Slovene name, but no American would ever get it due to the upside down Caron.
