Hi olive trees will never fruit after hard pruning thsts why your 18 month ones now have olives, and next year the ones you showed us with out olives should be full. The secret is to get to the stage of having half the trees fruiting each year. And one of the biggest jobs which you have never done is getting someone with a tractor to go round the trees before the rainy season to open up the soil to allow the rain water to soak in, so in the heat of the summer the trees will have some moisture to help form olives in spring /summer. Plus now is the best time to get rid of the height on the trees so you keep them a manageable height to pick the olives every year. Good luck with this years harvest. Olive oil is getting really expensive now you need to get your harvest up, so you can sell a few litres every year, even if its just to friends and family, your oil is much better quality than supermarkets stuff in the UK 👍👍👍

My mom used to store all her root veggies…including onions, in layers of sand, not touching each other… either underground in a cache deep enough that the rain doesn’t reach or indoors in a cool place, in a sturdy wooden box where the mice couldn’t get at them. Maybe an idea for next years harvest! The hardest part for us in Canada was going out in the cold, snowy winter to dig up enough to last her a week or so when they were stored outdoors. They lasted well for at least 6 months. Love your beautiful, peaceful channel guys! ❤

I appreciate your site. I enjoy your content. Just a quick thought, In the states , those bottom branches are called "suckers". They happen on all kinds of trees. Apple, peach, and non fruit bearing trees. Is always a good idea to remove them, let the focus be the upper part of the tree where the fruit is. Good luck in your olive adventure.

Your garden looks lovely. We've been warned to expect out first frost next week. Winter is arriving right on time. Oh, joy! I need to empty pots, cut back the hedge and do a last strumming for the season. I saw a pad of list sheets years ago which tickled me. It had 150 sheets to make lists on. The title said, "Dumb Thing I Have to Do Today!" That just made me giggle. I like your seed envelopes. Clever!

Epicormic growth, or suckers at the base of a tree, are best removed by pulling the shoots down rather than pruning with loppers. The idea is that pulling the shoot away takes dormant buds at the base of the stem as well as the shoot you want to remove, so reducing what will grow next season ....
@AbigailGerlach-zt1shАй бұрын
That's really good information! Thanks! I'll given that a try, though I'm not as strong as I used to be and some of those suckers put up a real fight!

It was good to see the results of your experiment in pruning olive trees at different times of the year - and what a difference it made! Now that you are experienced olive farmers and have conducted your own experiments, you will be able to pass on to others your own informed advice!! Oh, and btw - did you ever find out why the grapes failed this year? As always, it is really lovely to see your pets living their best life, and getting on so well together!! Wendy from London, UK.
@FrankieOffGridАй бұрын
It's been so helpful to be able to compare. It'll be interesting to see how the olives we pruned in last harvest perform next year. It's such a fun learning journey :) yes the grapes in the whole region pretty much failed due to the rain coming at a bad time and causing them to rot. Such a shame but there's always next year!
@PandaWDАй бұрын
@@FrankieOffGrid - ah well, at least it must have been of some consolation to to learn that that you hadn't done anything wrong, because it wasn't just your own grapes that failed.
