The slow motion really does add an almost animated quality to the images - probably becuase we're just not used to seeing such things at speeds we can really examine closely. Time lapse and slow motion are such magical things in so many ways :-)

Sweet! Great job on this one too. VERY relaxing to watch. Love the footage of the Swallowtails the best. Swallowtails and Monarchs are among my favorite butterflies.

I always thought they were just kind of random too, even though I knew that they flew with at least some sort of purpose and direction... Seeing them at slow speed really shows us their flight ability is far beyond what we can see in realtime. Ahhhh the magic of high speed photography! :-)

I always love it when butterflies get into those three-way spats like that... they seem so confused, not knowing which adversary to chase away first, and end-up looking like thre butterflies in a blender! XD We can always use some rain here, but it's pretty rare this time of year - May through November. Even clouds are hard to come by. I could sure go for some thunder and lightning storms - rain PLUS something cool to film! :-)

Very nice footage. I like how some of them seem to literally float in mid-air without even flapping. Of course the slow-mo makes this seem like they're doing so for longer than it actually is. Still, it's impressive what efficient and controlled fliers they are. :)

The scenes with more square formats are 300fps (512x384), while the widescreen format is 600fps (432x192). Both of those native Casio EX-F1 formats have been up-scaled and letterboxed to 720p for this video. Thanks for checking it out!

That's a good analogy - those larger ones (Pale Tiger Swallowtails) do indeed sail around like bombers, and are bigger than all the other species here. It's interesting how different species have quite different flight patterns... The smaller ones definitely do appear to flap around wildly, to the point that even in slow motion it's not terribly clear how they are able to control their speed and direction. Still they manage to pull it off! Thanks so much for the view and nice comment! :-)

Descent slow motion cameras (300fps and greater) are just now becoming available and affordable to general consumers, and the cool footage coming online from them is really amazing stuff! It's well worth the effort and expense :-) Thanks for stopping by!

The 4:3 clips were shot at 300fps, and the more widescreen ones at 600fps, all using the Casio EX-F1. All clips were played back at 30fps, resulting in a 10x and 20x speed-up, respectively. Thanks for checking it out! :-)

I am sometimes amazed to find wild things in the middle of large cities, but they can be surprisingly common if one watches for them. I think that most of the time people are too busy working their way through the crowds or hurrying to their destination to notice. Such is life in the big city! As for the music, I write pretty-much all of my own music... The "Band" Technician is me :-)

I think non-linear is a lot more interesting ;-] Thanks for the great comment too! The B&W one with the red wingtips is a Lorquin's Admiral (Limenitis lorquini). The larger creamy-white one with the black stripes is a Pale Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio eurymedon). As I understand it, individual Monarchs don't last the entire migration but they do breed along the way, and their offspring continue the trek. It may take 2 or 3 generations to make it from Mexico to Canada. Amazing nonetheless! :-)

Interesting isn't it? :-) Butterflies do get pretty beat-up, from crashing into things and attempts by birds to eat them, they lose large chunks of their wings and even then they still manage to fly well. Thanks for checking this one out!
