I'm surprised you didn't mention Dishonoured at all, with the ability to stop time, set up traps, make guards shoot at eachother, and then let it play out

Timeshift did the 'power fantasy.' You could stop time and take all enemies guns away and leave them defenseless.

Did you play Dishonered? If you upgrade your "Slow Time" ability, time freezes 99%. You can set up some pretty cool stuff with this ability and you can use it whenever you want, so it doesn't have a scripted feel. ^^

Makes me feel like spending the last 2 weeks programing a time control system for a game i'm working on in my spare time hasn't been wasted ;)

A game that I really noticed slow motion is The Witcher 2. When you switch between rune powers, the game doesn't pause, instead going into slow motion. At first, this seemed disadvantagious: I was still vunerable. However, as I became more accustomed to the mechanics, it changed, the selection wheel letting me survey the fight and keep the flow of action. By the end of the game, every fight felt from a Zach Snyder movie, where I would throw a fireball, then slow mo dodge an enemies attack, switching runes and my fireball flew through the air.

My first experience with slo-mo was with Spider-Man 2 on the Ps2 with his spidey sense ability for the blue bar. It gave him a new move set and i could run circles around anyone. If anyone shot at you then you could see each bullet more clearly. It was perfect.

The game you need to try is Geist for the gamecube. released just at the end of it's lifespan. Late game you could possess hosts that could make use of your time dilation for a brief time. (the world moved much slower as a ghost) the slow-mo would only last for a few seconds, but would re-charge extremely rapidly allowing you to do some really cool things. you could zip in and out of slo-mo at will to dodge individual projectiles. or empty a magazine while the world is in slo-mo and the gun would fire at your speed but the bullets would move with the world, then you could walk around to the side and watch as your enemy gets hit with a wall of bullets. and there was a great boss fight where the boss had the same ability, It created a great dynamic where you could try to use your power offensively and he could use his to defend. or he could try to dodge you normally and then use his power to attack you while yours was on cooldown and you had no chance to defend. I'v a feeling nostalgia might be making me remember it as better than it actually was, but I'd definitely say it's worth taking a look at.

great video cagey. Makes me want to go back and try superhot again. I feel like there can also be a lot of negative results of slow motion. it just exaggerates whatever emotion is happening at the time, so if the game is made in such a way that at the point where slow motion occurs the player is in a position to be irritated, the slow motion has the potential to extend and make more significant that irritation. I can't think of any solid examples other than maybe my first hand to hand combat in Hitman Absolution, when the tutorial hadn't yet mentioned hand to hand combat and no button prompts were appearing. the entire defeating sequence playing out in slow motion when I had no hint as to how to change the outcome only served to amplify my frustration in that moment.

Some games have the menus and weapon in slo-mo instead of in real-time so there's some urgency. God Hand's roulette wheel being one. I think it's fell out of favour a bit because you can't really do multiplayer while having it.

Such a great videos, yet so unpopular. Greetings from Russia :). p.s. you can make a comparison between No man's Sky and Out There, the second is a great game with really risky gameplay mechanics, which was saving me during the long train trips. You've probably played it already, but if not, you need to check it out.

For me new DOOM weapon roulette wheel is perfect. You can still keep your fingers in crusial keypads all the time and then select accurately which weapon you select when Baron of Hell or etc is running towards you slowly thanks to slow motion. It keeps the action on but player is still able make decisions with out too much of a hurry and prevents "No I didn't want! I wanted other weapon but I was too hurry to click"-situations.
