That's me 🙏 got on my bike for the first time today did a few circles and figure 8s in the back yard (grass). First time trying to stop. pulled the front brake and tossed myself right over the handlebars. All I can say is I'm happy I was in the yard not the street. Learning the hard way in the best scenario!

I got lucky on my bike, when i bought it the front brake was removed, so i learned to brake with only the rear brake. So i am trained to pretty much use only the rear brake. So i will have to get used to the front brake now. But not for slow brakes.

My EXGF was pulling in the garage, grabbed a handful of front brake and down she went. The only time in 57 yrs of riding I went down was when I forgot to put the kickstand down. I let the bike fall on me, I'll heal I don't want to mess up bike.🛵🛵🛵

When I bought my first motorcycle, everything was fine, only until when I had to stop, it fell to the ground! Great advice for beginners. But using the front brake during cone patterns to get the bike to full lock quickly is a technique that I got from Quinn Redeker and it works great. I'm not disagreeing with you, but I wish that this was presented as a beginner technique and should be used until you gain experience and skill.

I am now considering getting to ride again and if I do there is a elementary parking lot where I will practice all your exercises And become the boss I wont ride the streets until I master them Robert I know you live in Georgia but do you ever travel to teach? My first thought was, as long as you’re stopping straight, why not? But you explained it and convinced me, so thanks! In my experience, which started more than 60 years ago before I had a drivers license, riders used only the rear brake, missing most of the braking power available. I had to take an MSF course to continue to be able to ride on base in the 80s-and I learned a lot. I didn’t own a bike for years after I retired, but bought a Sportster in 2005. I took the MSF course again, then took an “advanced” course from HD on my EGlide Classic a few years later. Your videos have given me more food for thought, so thanks again! Now if this snow would just go away…

Before buying my Indian Challenger, I had taken the same model bike as a rental to ride thrice. I had gained much confidence and the day when I bought the new Indian Challenger and was riding her home, at a stop sign, at a slow speed I hit the front brake. Yup. My dad drove long-haul truck for his entire life or most of it, and I was always amazed at how well he could shift through these gears, so smoothly without using the clutch. He was my inspiration for learning how to operate a manual transmission. his driving was an art form, and every time I remember as a kid, there was never head jerking when we came to a stop it was like he was trying his best to make it artwork….. and that’s one of the things that I really love about motorcycling is the ability to make it as art full as you want to. There’s just something about the mechanical of it that is now becoming obsolete with all the “automatic BS” out there on all the new bikes…

I've been working on my right foot. I'm just getting back on after an accident earlier this year where my right leg was ripped open by the peg. Nothing feels the same. There is alot of construction where I live, the concrete is definitely growing, and dirt, and gravel, in the road, and intersections. Alot of maneuvering and changing lanes too, slow speed, moderate speed. About 5 to 40mph. I've always used both, but I find my self forcing myself to use the rear. Been favoring my leg too long. My bike will be the only one at the harley dealer with worn out front brakes??? Ha ha! Seriously though, the right foot is important, very important. Love the video!

The front brake will only take down a motorcycle when the rider hasn't practiced much. A more experienced rider can use the front brake in pretty much any situation. If you use the front brake everywhere all the time then you quickly learn how the bike responds to the front brake, and it won't take long until your right hand "knows" what not to do (for instance: don't grab a bunch of brake with the handlebar turned). But gentle braking with the front is perfectly fine in any situation, our fingers are much more precise than our foot. (PS. Of course there are situations where we want to use the rear brake in slow speed maneuvering. I'm just saying that once we're passed the beginner stage and the right hand has become more precise, then the front brake will no longer cause the bike to fall). At the exit from our neighborhood, the view is obstructed in both directions, and we have to come to within 1 foot of the main road before we can see traffic. This means that if I see traffic, then I have to stop immediately. Also, this is on a downhill. The simplest way to do this is to approach this intersection with straight handlebars, with very low speed, and if traffic is coming, then stop the bike immediately with the front brake. Another situation is lane filtering at traffic lights. This is also low-speed maneuvering, and there is a chance that we have to stop very quickly. Here too we may have to brake hard at low speed. That means front brake. Without it, it's not really possible to safely go between the traffic waiting at the light.

After first coming across you , I pretty sure I gave you a hard time about the R18. But after watching this video, and realising why I broke a few rib last week,now I know why. Excellent explaining to us lazy older riders who create bad habits. Btw still got the R18 ,she's a amazing bike, made me lazy with all the electronics,etc . Jumped on a sv650 with no abs for work , hit the front breaks on a road work area, and turning slightly,,and boom. Hit the ground hard.. Thankyou sharing.you are a wealth of information. I still got the R 18 classic. She's a amazing motorcycle.should give one of them another go one day. It's very easy to misunderstand as an American, thinking team USA., But she stands on her one as what she is a boxer ,and the R18 was ment to be raw and full of character that actually shock the system (come of a softail her),,with nice thumping engine that swings side to side,,and short pipes that thump like mine. Hya, i just found your vid today and it sounds all so logical. There is only one thing i dont understand, here in The Netherlands they teach us in drivingschool to ALLWAS keep your left foot on the peg and your right foot on the street when stop. Using your way to brake at slow speed would be very uncomfortable if using the Dutch way. Your way of slow braking is more safe in my opinion. Thanks for the lesson!!!

The other day I was making a right turn from a stop and I noticed myself headed toward a car that was in the turning lane (completely my fault) I think this is where the trust and believe part came in because I almost let the bike fall to a point and then completely let out he clutch and around the turn I went. Wheeeew close one!!

The Front brake serves only One purpose. To keep you from rolling at Stop lights. Otherwise they are useless.

The Basic Rider Course stressed using both brakes. The also stressed making sure the handlebars are straight. When I initially started following your methods, it was difficult to break the habit. Although I have alot to learn, my riding has improved immensely since I learned to properly use the rear brake only at slow speeds.

I think front brake use is ok... but... in training new riders it's easier to say don't use them... this way you avoid the turning and the front brake.. which is where the problem exists... I do agree just using the rear is smoother... plus allows more balance... But I would add... older bikes may need maintenance (fork oil change) mostly... by using the front brake you compensate for a shaky front end feel.

So many variables that can all depict how to brake, and ride in general. Personally I think if everyone would start out on a 125cc enduro type and trail ride with someone that is really good on both the dirt and street it would be a huge learning help/experience. Then move it to pavement and have different contaminates on the pavement. Learn what you can and cant do and what to expect the bike to do. Then move up to a midsize bike and learn what that feels like, both on the dirt and pavement. Just the diff between a 125 and a 250 is significant. Hard to believe people hop on these gigantic heavyweight bikes with little to no riding experience. Severe injury or death awaits. Same with the crotch rockets.

Very well explained! There are different situations for stopping, and different techniques to apply in each. Quick/emergency stop will likely need the front brake (as you said and demonstrated), and switching to the rear brake wastes valuable time to avoid an "incident". Stopping by using the rear brake only (when you are at slower speeds, and in normal situations) is much more controlled and comfortable, especially for the passenger. It is interesting when I hear people say "but I feel wobbly just before stopping". And the answer is, plan ahead for the controlled smooth stop (begin stopping earlier/sooner) and go back in the friction zone just slightly to solve the "wobbly" feeling. I don't think other experts necessarily disagree with your advice in this video, but I think sometimes other "teachers" want to make things a little "easier" for folks who are not as willing to practicing safe motorcycle operations. In my opinion, making things "easier" for those folks can be doing a disservice. The more effective action is to do what you (and others) do and clearly explain safe techniques and help people learn them.

If been riding 40 plus years, biggest bike was 93 Heritage Classic until now. I bought an Electra Glide Ultra Classic, what a learning curve. The top heaviness of the batwing and the leg lowers are something of a problem, no less the antilock brakes. Line of sight on the Heritage was the ground right in front of you, with the Ultra it's more like 15-20 feet down the road. I'm trying to learn where to look. This video may help with the braking issues, I hate the immediate catch, and I'll call it a bang, of the front brakes. Going slow it's scary having all the assist versus the brute force it takes front braking the Heritage. Anyone out there have similar feelings with older versus anti-lock brakes and what of a line of sight while going slow? Road speed is no problem.

Love how you said, "we are not going into neutral." Only time I put her in neutral is to fire her up. I'm still really new at this and first thing I told myself is never be in N, be in 1st at a stop. Coming to a smooth stop is the first thing I learned in a car, then taking off smoothly. Same thing I constantly practice on the bike. "Keep it loaded" "Believe" words to ride and live by. Love they way you teach, definitely helps me to be a better rider. I hear your voice in me head every time I smoothly put my left foot down from heel to toe like I'm stopping walking with no shift in weight in any direction. Hi Robert I have practiced this week using the stopping technique however I seem to not be stopping when I go back into the friction zone to smooth stop I seem to be still rolling then I panic and put my feet down. I think you mentioned 30 percent friction zone ? So do you think I am too much in the friction zone too much power ? Also that last 1-10 mph stop with rear brake only so you naturally pull the clutch all way in ? Then into friction zone only if needed. ? Thank you 🙏

Awesome video. New rider here and explains why when I come to stop sometimes it's good sometimes it's meh. The thing I'm also struggling with is 90 degree turns in an intersection or side street. Say your going 35 mph and need to turn left or right. I apply brakes but should I drag rear while I'm turning? When I try to apply brakes before turn I feel like I'm either going too slow or too fast. Any help would be appreciated!
