Slow stitching Part 1: what if I don't have any supplies?!!

So you would like to start slow stitching but you don't have anything - literarily nothing to work with!
In this video I have stripped everything back as far as I could for the absolute beginner to have a go with very minimal supplies.
Apologies for calling the stitch we use as slip stitch I meant to say running stitch.!

Thank you very much…I am in the basically “have nothing” camp when it comes to supplies…and experience. I find these small hand stitched pieces so appealing…full of texture and attention. I am appreciative of your sensitivity to the absolute novice and enjoyed this video . Found an old pillow case and a bit of cheesecloth and some buttons. Gonna “have a go” as you all say. Makes me smile.

I totally agree, this is a unique video for that very reason - and there are MANY MANY people who have no room for a stash and can’t spend money on stash when they’re feeding a family and paying a mortgage or rent! It’s BRILLIANT to see this use for dried out baby wipes, and also tumble drier sheets! Even a piece of loo roll would do in a pinch! Most charity shops have a bin of stuff they’ve been donated but can’t sell and you can offer them 20p for a stained cotton blouse and they’ll often thank you for taking it!

I suppose dryer sheets might work as a base also. Thanks for this. No one else seems to have remembered the very beginner, beginners the way you have. I'm the type who has to go and buy all the supplies right off but I realize that is not always the best way to go. What if they don't really like doing the craft and then they're stuck with all the expensive supplies. lol Believe me, I've been there. lol Thanks again.

That word wadding just makes me smile. Lol I have batting and I suppose it makes YOU laugh. Language is so much fun isn't it? I know what you mean about not having supplies. I kept every stinking piece of fabric and now I can do slow stitching. I have to help my daughter with supplies for her junk journal hobby and I don't mind as I'm into it too. I hope someday maybe to help another person with some pieces of fabric. There's a place here in town that gives everything away for free. So, im going to have a look for sheets and towels and old pillowcases. Then help someone with fabric and send some threads and a couple needles. Yes this is a grand idea

What a super video for people just beginning to become interested in slow stitching for fun - very inventive use of dried out babywipes!! I use a local charity shop for all my fabrics and bits of lace, I ask them if I may rummage through their donations that ARE stained or torn and those are perfect as you can always salvage little bits of button, lace, cotton, patterned and plain and men’s shirts make great fabrics to stitch on. Everything is £1 so we do swaps with friends and a cut up blouse can provide a scrap for 20 people!

I think this is very one of the best videos I’ve seen ! A lot of us are geting into sewing but don’t hve all the trims and ect and you know that supplies are sadly so expensive ! This is a very pop hobby I am seeing akd from paper crafting in journals and even this is is so expensive ! 25 to way more just for some supplies for just enough to make one ! Wow I guess you can’t find junk to save any more ! I wanted to mention goodwills and resale shops may have some decent deals on things ! Also I’d love to go to Estates ! But idk how to find them most the time ! But I do ty for this ! I’ve been told if your a new sewer you can place an add amd ask for anyone’s old scraps that they may have cheaply or wanna throw away but I tell ya it’s as expensive as buying new ! If not higher ! At least my experience and many do just give up ! My kids dad has lost his legs knees feet and employment so I can’t afford it any more amd sadly I’d gotten a Machine sewing that is abs some supplies but sadly all of this happened after the fact of me trying to get supplies togther lol but I hate investing in this and allow myself to be held back cause if this happening in our lives ! Lol but I do ty so much as someone who would like to use reg thread and I have some hand quilting threads that I was wondering how many times I’d double them to be equal to yarn !? Ty so much !

Thank you for such a lovely comment, 💗 to you for what's going on in your life, things come along like that sometimes don't they but a test of charector is to find good out of bad. To make sewing thread roughly the same thickness as embroidery floss would be to use about 3-4 strands at a time, maybe give a slight twist as you sew to make them lay together nicely. My dear late mum used to say to me when things were going wrong 'keep your chin up, it can only get better'. so I'm sending her words to you 🙏

I’m learning slowstitching now, in a little series that I’m in, but I could have used this basic video when I started! The baby wipes are genius! I was trying to learn embroidery stitches on 1 thickness of fabric - a thin muslin - & was having all kinds of problems! This technique would have been better! Thanks so much!

They have Sashiko thimbles that go in front of the base of the finger on the inside of the hand. I haven't tried one yet but they look interesting.

Hey I also have been seeing people make yo-yos by cuting a basic circle or heart any basic style and runing a small stitch around them amd you could take different scraps from old cloths like you said here abs make them and you maybe can make flowers out of spare parts !? Maybe you do a video for that possibly !? Again ty !

In U.S., the Dollar Tree and othef 99c stores have sewing materials very inexpensive for starting out.

Thanks for sharing that Debra, those in the USA have lots of choice, sadly the UK doesn't have the big stores like you guys do 😕

What a helpful video. I've been searching the internet for help. I ordered 2 kits because they were pretty and reasonable. No instructions. I was told by both woman you just do your own thing. One kit came with a hoop. I know it was so helpful when i did cross stitch. What do you think or is it up to the individual?. Thanks for sharing your experience. 😊

I apologize if I did miss something, but can you tell me why you put the baby wipes in there? I was cleaning out and recently gave away a stack of fabrics. I change up my crafts constantly... and then got reminded of this wonderful craft. thnku...😊

1 hrs 8s plenty of time, not too long. Another idea is you could stop the video, do most of the flower, then come back and complete the flower and carry on.
