I grew up very poor too. Being far away from civilization you could say. 150 miles from the nearest town which was also small. I wore pass me downs and also my mom used to bleach the cotton bags she bought the mealiemeal in and made my underwear. It was lovely and soft after the bleach process. I believe as long as you are clean and not wearing dirty clothes I don't care whether it's patched or mended.❤

When l was young about 8 or 9 we lived in South Africa. My father was an alcoholic so mum and my brother and l were poor white folks in an apartheid world. I remember my mum sewing a school uniform for me from the legs of my father's trousers. I don't remember feeling poor. Just happy that my uniform was grey like the others. I think you have to hold your head up high and walk proud. Now in my 70th year and living in Canada l sometimes despair at the waste and over indulgence of society nowadays. But mum always said be thankful for what you have.

Hi Marion; I was the fifth girl in my family and almost all my clothes were hand-me-downs. By the time I got them they were full of patches. My mother didn’t realize it but she was another Picasso. At Easter time my mother would make me a dress sometimes from feedsack fabric. She would make little pantaloons to go with it too. I was so proud. We were very poor. I started sewing when I turned five years old - many years ago.

I think many of us of a certain age have memories like this in our family history ☺️ But most probably younger people these days won't have. Unless they've had people like us who took up sewing because we enjoyed it at the time. There's that period in the 70's and 80's where it was seriously uncool to be doing anything handmade. At least.. that was my experience as a young woman who used to do knitting in her dinner hour! 😅

Marion, I grew up in a family with 3 girls (I was the middle). We weren't poor but both of my parents had grown up very poor and remained thrifty. Every August, before the school year began, my mother would line the 3 of us up and have us try on all the school dresses, to see which dresses fit which girl, and then she would shorten some and lengthen others, as needed. She never cut off the excess fabric when she shortened a dress because she might need to lengthen it the following year. My husband's family was the same and we are both thrifty to this day, even when we don't need to be. I like living this way and we have fabulous thrift stores in my city. Also...wouldn't Michael be SO excited and proud to know that you're being interviewed for all the world to see!! I can't wait to tune in.

Hi Marion 👋 It’s so interesting what you’ve said about your perspective on the historical repair techniques. I too, have felt a bit prickly about it and haven’t really got to the bottom of why, other than to say that it may be from a combination of my own experience of having a tough time financially right now, and through my interest in living history and archeology. History was written about the upper echelons of society and there is little in the surviving written record of how the ordinary folk lived their lives day to day. So, in the late 20th & 21st Century West we tend to look at things from a romanticised perspective, because we have the luxury of being able to do that. We are spoiled now. Even as I struggle to keep the roof over my head and, sometimes, food in my belly, I don’t forget that I am still spoiled compared to my ancestors. I am interested in the historical mending techniques, because they are historical, and bear the signature of human resilience and resourcefulness which has enabled our species’ survival for the past 30,000 or so years. I found your channel because I was looking for a British KZbinr that I could learn tips & tricks from, in order to make-do and mend clothing, because I have a need to do more of that now. However, I’m a 70’s child, when handmade stuff was looked down on, as was being a ”homemaker”, so I wasn’t taught those skills as a child, despite really wanting to learn. All of that cultural shift appears to have coincided precisely with the introduction of the Credit Card in the 1960’s (in Britain) and because it was being heavily marketed as being “your flexible friend” that will enable you to have everything you want, shop bought, which would save you time and effort…and you’re worth it, blah blah blah…My mother used to make & mend our clothes when we were small children and then, suddenly, she stopped. I wouldn’t mind betting it was the direct result of her getting her first credit card, come to think of it 🤔 …and, through that marketing, like everyone else, being made to believe that handmade and repaired was inferior / to be scorned. It’s very sad, particularly for those, like you, that truly suffered in the playground because of it. Thankfully I still want to learn how to “be a homemaker “, because I feel fulfilled while practicing & honing those skills, and there are, mercifully, people like you who are willing to share your knowledge. I also feel that we need to fully resurrect the traditional craft skills now more than ever. It continues to boggle my mind when I see comments from people who clearly enjoy stitching on purely aesthetic projects, but can’t seem to make the transition over to making their own clothing. I may be considered weird, but I struggle with doing purely aesthetic stitching, particularly when I have a pile of repairs to do. Thankfully, as you said, since visible mending has become fashionable I can practice embroidery stitches while also doing my mending. In fact, I did exactly that this morning on a t-shirt that my dog stole and put his teeth through. He’s a regular offender, hence the pile of repairs. 🙄🤭I just like my stuff and my “work” to be both pretty and have a purpose, and that applies to most things in my world, but function will always take precedence when time, energy and opportunity are limited. I’ve often been told that I was born in the wrong decade. Maybe that’s why I feel and do as I do? 🤷🏻♀️
@magdastar2249Ай бұрын
You are certainly not alone feeling that way.

Great to read this Del. Even though it's taken me ages to get around to! I totally agree with you. I got married in the late 70's and was always the odd one out, doing my knitting in my work lunch hour or sewing something. Girls of my age just weren't doing those things, at least not where I was. So I never knew anyone else who had the same interests. My dad repaired the old car, my Mam made clothes to earn money, Grandma made our school uniforms and cardigans, Granda repaired chairs and did woodwork. I came from a family where making things was an ordinary thing to do. Cut to all these years later andbecause I wasn't on social media or had any interest in the computer etc. I just had no idea that anyone would be interested in anything I did. It was just stuff I made. I definitely got a surprise! My sister and I have always said we were born too late. However..she thinks we would have been in some big house doing embroidery. I said we'd have probably been the scullery maids!!!

Absolutely beautiful piece, Marion! And you have given me an idea. Like you, I have iron-on transfers - a small suitcase full! They were passed down from my grandmothers, and my mother was about to throw them in the trash when I saved them. They were just so beautiful, but I've never done anything with them. Now I'm seeing them transferred and stitched on a slow-stiched background, maybe in just two colors. I'm excited to try it out now, but I need to get through a stack of Christmas gift projects first. I'm also excited about your live interview. It is good that your amazing talent is receiving the recognition it deserves. You are an inspiration!

Thank you Marion for your video and sharing this page in your fabric adventure. I do agree with you regarding mending. I remember as a little girl my mother sewing a ladder in her stockings. Problem is everything is so disposable today. I overhead a man saying a button had popped off his shirt, it went in the bin, his wife does not sew. My thought sew it yourself then. All school blazers were bought slightly large so we would grew into it and it would last a long time. Make do and mend came before cast off and buy again. I think most of our generation can sew (a button at least) and cook from scratch . I was asked by a young friend the other day how long to cook carrots, they only ever used frozen. 😲 . Congratulations to the winners of the tickets,have a lovely time and Marion you will be great at your interview, we keep saying you are an artist so enjoy it. I am not on social media but I am sure it will be a hit.
@marionsworld2411 күн бұрын
Make do and mend over here too Carol. I agree about the button sewing too. Surely anyone should be able to do something like that you would think! I also cook from scratch. It doesn't have to take hours. I can have a fresh meal on the table in 20 minutes if I want to. Also it's a different way of looking at food I think. People say to themselves 'What do I want to eat?' I look in the fridge and cupboard and say 'What have I got that needs cooking?' Totally different in outlook..

Fabulous end to the blue page! I grew up using hand me downs. It was not lack of money really, it was maybe not letting barely worn items go to waste. My 4 daughters grew up using used clothes as well even though i bought them something new every now and then. I can understand how some people may feel embarrassed but I still did it. My grandkids also use hand me downs and get many used clothes from others and are happy to wear them. Can't wait to hear/see what you have in store for November!!! Your interview will go perfectly! Another lovely piece Marion. Blue is my favorite color, so whenever I get to this page I will be able to use lots of blue scraps I’ve been keeping. I specially love how simple this page is and how amazing it looks

Hello Marion, from Manitoba, Canada. ❤ One of the first of your videos that I came across was when you started assembling the pieces of blue fabric for this page. I wondered how it would turn out and I must say I am very impressed. Such good ideas and so beautiful! I had never seen this kind of work before - the free flowing of ideas. I am so excited to get into my fabric stash and threads and paints and all those art mediums I have collected over the past 50 years, and finally, something touches my heart and stirs my creative side. After researching different ways to use up scraps, these books and pages,and bags that you create are so lovely. I'm now watching your first videos while following your current ones. So very enjoyable. ❤ Louise

I looked up 5 pm UK time in Mountain time ( for Colorado) and I think it’s 10:00 am since the UK will be on GMT. P.S. Marion, we are all super proud of you and we all want to see your interview…it’s something like having our fairy godmother being interviewed!! I hope that it’s tons of fun! Yay Marion!!💕Donna

Oh my goodness Donna! You're making me smile and blush at the same time.. I've spent my life just stitching away at things and never thinking I was doing anything different from anyone else. I still think there's many people around who are just quietly getting on with it and no-one ever knows just what they can do or are capable of ☺️

This is very beautiful. Yes, agree about mending or associating patches & mending with poor. That is how I frew up- if you had patches your where poor. So I’m loving this new faze (fashion) That patches and mending is very cool.

The page is lovely. Congratulations on the interview. I’ll try to tune in. I don’t mind mended clothes. I grew up in the 50/60s and mom sewed our clothes. When my kids were little I Sewed their clothes but not when they were teenagers.😊
@marionsworld24Ай бұрын
I don't mind now... though I did when I was young. I mended my children's clothes and have always bought second hand. My point though is that it wasn't really a thing you told people about... in the way that it's classed as thrifty and eco minded and creative now.

What an inspiration this became! And yes , you did achieve that harmonious unity. I hope to begin a scroll sampler of slow stitching soon, so this is very timely.

Oh Marion, you have such an infectious smile and are useless at hiding it - I used to get into trouble at school as I couldn’t hide a grin either if I found something funny. I can’t think of anyone more worthwhile to be interviewed- an easy interview she’ll just need to push your button and sit back and listen lol Don’t ever let the site change you - keep to your principles you give the rest of us courage ❤️

I so wish I could give you 10 thumbs up instead of just one! You definitely enrich my world with your charming, so talented, yet modest self. The blue piecing with white embroidery is on of my favourite of your creations. I will definitely be attempting my own version.

What a beautiful piece you stitched! I love how textural the background is, but it doesn't detract from your wonderful embroidery. Well, I was 20 videos behind, but I have finally caught up. I missed your live streams, so I hope you have another one.
