I have several antique pillowcases that my great grandmother made. She must have done lots of these as the back looks as good the front with no knots or traveling threads. I'm not sure if she used pearl cotton or crochet thread but it's not embroidery stranded thread... Her thread is twisted together. 💕🌞🌵😷

It's probably done with fine crochet cotton or fine perle. It's such a skill to see the beauty of the old cutwork pieces. But we can still do that today if we want to...🪡🧵

I agree with you Marion, this is not difficult to do. A friend of mine asked me if I would finish an embroidery for an elderly friend of hers and when I saw it was Cutwork I wasn't sure if I would be able to do it but I persevered and when it was finished I could not tell the difference between the existing work and the sections that I did. I was pleased with it and the lady was thrilled as she could no longer do the work herself.

My project list is growing like topsy! I've only just drawn up my phenology circle for January but I have yet to create the colour chart to go with it.....then there's the crochet thing, the detached pico flowers picture to do and all the other things I had in my project file before I started watching your wonderful videos. My great-aunts on my father's side ran a craft school in Mexico and would send things to my parents. I have a cutwork tablecloth they made. It is beautiful! They also taught knitting, crochet, making flower sculptures out of some sort of dough, etc. I wish I could have met them, but they passed when I was very young.

I have some pieces of cut work that my mother did before she was married so in the late 40’/early 1950’s. Her needlework was incredible, I could never reach her standards mainly because I don’t have an eye to detail. I’m so pleased you’re doing this because I’m definitely going to try it! It depends on how fine a thread you go for. Because I used this thicker thread, and this is only a piece that measures 8" x 10", this didn't take too long... probably a couple of hours stitching once I had drawn my pattern.

There's quite a few similar techniques, Richelieu, Broderie Anglaise, Whitework, Carrickmacross. I've just tried to draw out a generic type that you see on old linens...

My mother did cut work when she was young, but I never saw her do it, and have often wondered how it was done. Thank you for showing us. I'm not sure I will be trying it just yet as I've so much on the go. My grandson has requested a deadpool blanket so I've had to teach myself graphgran crochet. I am also using a book i found in the library to create a stiched stitch library and I have yarn waiting to be knitted into socks and jumpers😂.
