One mommy to another I have five kids and if the only thing you do all day is keep your kids alive then that’s enough and give yourself credit for just doing that alone it’s a full time job and the most important job there is. And anything you add on top of this is like icing on the cake 🎂. Your doing great mama

Great canning. I have been making blueberry jam for years. Never used the water bath method at end. I am a former FACS teacher (home economics). Just turned them upside down after filling jars. Much easier and they are safely sealed. Just make sure jars are sterilized ahead of time. I enjoy watching your channel.

That is the way jams are canned in the Netherlands as well. It's even on the pectine package I use

Be proud of all you accomplish in a day! Every time you pull out one of the items you’ve grown and preserved, give yourself a pat on the back. Some may say that’s prideful but being humbly proud of what you accomplish is not a bad thing, I think. I usually only pickle our cucumbers but our cucumber crop was not the best this year so we just ate them all fresh. I am freezing our grape tomato harvest to roast in the oven when the weather cools off. We just sowed some cooler weather crops in anticipation of cooler weather 🎉. Thankfully our garden has slowed down a bit, probably because it knows we just can’t eat or manage any more of it. I do see a flush of new growth though so I know the garden isn’t done providing just yet.

So glad it has been a bumper crop gardening year for you! we will definitely look forward to having our canned goods a few months from now when the weather is much cooler! I’m hoping for some pumpkins this fall but we haven’t planted much else. I’m not sure we can continue to handle more harvests either! lol thank you again for stopping by!

One of the best feelings in the world is when you can put up home grown staples. My mom and I, just the other day, made blackberry jam and pickles made from our own blackberries and cucumbers. I am so elated.

It is so rewarding! We usually have a ton of blackberries. I will have to keep that in mind! I usually just freeze them for cobblers but a jam sounds lovely!

I feel the same way when I’m busy in the kitchen; that I’m not a good mom because I’m not physically sitting down playing with my girls. I appreciated how you put it in words ❤ Also not experienced AT ALL in jam/jelly. I get so stressed because it is very precise when each step needs to be done. And it always happens that someone needs me 😅 but I haven’t lost a batch yet. I also love sugar and think it’s crazy how much you use. But this last time I tried low sugar with the strawberry since it’s naturally sweeter and the regular one with the grapes since they can be more tart. 🤷♀️ I tell myself, still healthier than the store. Thanks for your videos 🥰
@rustichoney2 ай бұрын
I agree, it still has to be better than store bought! Our grapes were pretty sweet so the low sugar actually worked out great! Funny that "low sugar" was still 4 cups! haha! We also canned our jalapeños based on your previous video.

Hi Lauren, Im from Northern Maine. Our garden is producing so well this year that I'm having a hard time keeping up with it. We live in PA and every member of the family has had lyme disease at least once. It is recommended to wear pants with your socks over them or tucked into your boots. I have heard you can put some duct tape, sticky side out around your lower leg to stop them from crawling up. Keep the grass, or any brush cut low so you don't pick them up as you walk thru. We don't have them much here on our new property but when we lived in the woods in our old house, yikes they were ever present. I guess here they stay in the woods behind the house and out of the sunny yard? Never tried anything besides regualr bug spray that we spray on hats and clothing. Spraying it on my hat helps keep the deerflies away.
@rustichoney2 ай бұрын
We’ve had a couple extended family members have Lyme disease too! 😣❤️ Unfortunately the ticks do end up in our sunny yard AND even on our gravel driveway. They’re everywhere! 😓 Hoping another round of spray nips it! Thank you for sharing with me!

My mother canned for years. All kinds of vegetables and fruit. When we made jam we had to seal the jars with parrafin. I’m sure that’s not how it’s spelled. We had a basement and had a sink, stove and refrigerator down there and we did the canning down there. It was much cooler than upstairs in the kitchen. Of course we didn’t have air conditioning.

Yes jam always has a high amount of sugar. Where I live there is a special pectine sugar that allows you to use less. From those in the US I hear that most use pomona pectin (I think it's called) that allows you to use even no sugar. I live in the Netherlands and we just take clean jars and skrew-on lids and put the jam or jelly in hot immediately close tight and put it up side down for about 30 min or so. It seals the same as waterbath canning. I use that method of everything that is waterbath canned advised in the US and never had a problem.
@rustichoney2 ай бұрын
That’s considered an old method here in the states but as we all know sometimes old methods are still just fine 😉 Sounds like you have your systems down and more years of experience than I! Great info on the sugar and pectin. Thanks so much for sharing and stopping by today!
