Enjoy a virtual visit and explore Rex Whistler’s famous mural as never before in ‘Slow Whistler Araf’.
Considered to be Rex Whistler’s most accomplished work, the famous mural at Plas Newydd House and Garden in Anglesey was commissioned by Charles Paget, 6th Marquess of Anglesey, for his newly created dining room in 1936 and it took Whistler nearly two years to complete.
For the first time ever, the mural that spans across 58ft, is captured in ‘Slow TV’, and paired with a sound composition that brings the mural to life.
Commissioned by National Trust Cymru, ‘Slow Whistler Araf’ creates a unique experience, allowing viewers to get closer than ever before to this masterpiece to discover the amazing detail and features hidden within it.
The painting notionally reflects a fantastical and dramatic maritime setting of Plas Newydd, and specifically the view from the room’s windows, but its vast and wonderfully imaginative seascape also draws on Whistler’s wider interest and experience of European architecture and travel.
