Loved the video topic & how it was framed, but the way the Displate Ad was framed was a bit too cringe in the "don't know how to do something basic? they'll do it for you" sense. As someone who has 4 lovely Displate Products, and have gifted 3 more, Imo it's just destructive to suggest that people who don't have something as basic as a simple set of tools have any business buying any decorations, let tools that'll help you better establish any space one has rights to throw up a Displate on

I’m surprised it took Wrigleys nearly a decade to start marketing 5 Gum to gamers. The packaging of 5 already had that sleek, black on neon colour aesthetic of gaming brands like the Xbox and Razor, and their original demographic of 14 to 25 year old boys and men already overlap significantly with the gaming community, so pandering to them just seems like a no brainier.

Those OG ads had some real creative passion behind them, and I feel that's part of the reason it succeeded. People can tell when they're being cheaply pandered to. Those shorts were mysterious, engaging and just neat. You felt like you were watching a 5 Gum sponsored short film rather than a 5 Gum ad. In other words, the executives let the creative minds cook and they made a banger meal.

It's definitely the kind of shift where you can tell that the marketing went from being designed by people in their 20's who lived on the streets their whole lives and finally got a big break to release their creativity in the 2000's and early 2010's. To now being made by millennials who have rich parents and gave them the job through nepotism and that spoiled millennial kid has absolutely never seen a life outside of a cushy California house, but they'll absolutely tell you that they know better than you on what people actually enjoy and what they like to see.

As a visual effects artist, I appreciated those original commercials for the incredible VFX work on display. I don't know what company did the work but at least one of the spots was directed by John Favreau. My suspicion is that they were incredibly expensive and lengthy to produce. I loved 5 gums. But now in Europe you can only find it in cubes, not the bars it used to come in. Which not only makes the package far more unconvinient, but also the taste seems way less intense and shorter lasting to me. That's why I abbandoned it. I still miss the old packing and flavours.

I remember in the late 2000's when 5 gum came out. It didn't matter how lame, nerdy, poor, or generally uncool you were, all it took to jump to the top of the cool list was to pull out a pack of 5 gum in the classroom and pass a few pieces around. People would crowd up and offer anything they had, especially food, just to get a few pieces. Monster energy drinks, Axe body spray, and 5 gum were the epitome of coolness in high school.

My favorite thing about 5 Gum in school was how the foil wrappers were cooler looking than other gum's foil wrappers, and seemingly easier to peel off of the inner backing too. I'd used to always try to peel it off in one piece, and then it would readily stick to things like pens, so I'd wrap pens, mechanical pencils, etc. up in bright shiny blue or green foil.

I actually do chew gum while gaming because no crumbs and doesn’t carry the risks of emptying an entire bag before you realize it like other snack foods. That being said, 5 gum is probably the single worst gum for gaming because it loses it’s flavor so quickly. Long lasting flavor is the single most important quality for gum to chew while gaming or working. Softer gums also are less noisy, which 5 gum tends to be pretty stiff in consistency too.

I remember more than a few times joking with friends and saying "HOW IT FEELS TO CHEW 5 GUM" after doing some stupid stunt or sitting in a massage chair or whatever, that phrase and the thrilling visuals was the gimmick and to sway from it wasn't ideal. To keep people you need a quality product so I'd say from there it's just about the flavors. I haven't chewed gum in a while but I remember getting the Cobalt (Peppermint) flavor a few times back in the day and it tasted generic but good. The Limited Edition kinda flavors were pretty nice and different and I'd try them here and there, those were the most enticing (I don't chew gum often so enticing is a bit of an exaggeration but if I found one that tasted good enough maybe I would)

Only about half way through the video so I’m not sure if it gets covered later on, I believe a big cause of the fall of the popularity of gum was the fall in the popularity of traditional cigarettes. Gum has always been pseudo-tied to cigarettes. Because of the amount of saliva produced by chewing gum it was the better option in comparison to mints. Once vaping became more available gum became much less necessary for a large portion of consumers. Young people especially boys and young men the age range originally targeted by 5 gum were the first to transition to vaping and remove the need for gum from their everyday use. With this in mind it would make a little more sense why 5 gum shifted their marketing in an attempt to reach consumers who still smoked traditional cigarettes (edit: and as the commenters below suggests, people looking to stop smoking) because that was probably the highest population of daily gum chewers the biggest chunk of money in the market at the moment.

@@ericwilliamson263 as a former smoker chewing gum is not about tricking myself into thinking I already smoked, but about needing to keep myself busy with something that requires just the right amount of passive physical and mental interaction. I actually used to hate gum, and I especially hated nicotine gum since it just reminded me of menthols (which I also hated). However, I noticed that I’ve been chewing a lot of gum lately, and I’ve been doing it during the exact same times I would’ve been smoking. I quit smoking cigs just over a year ago, and my biggest triggers (besides drinking) were just daily routine stuff like driving, long walks, and even going to and waking up from bed. Cigs were a way to distract myself during those mundane, and sometimes frustrating, activities.

I'm American so I still see it around but almost don't even realize it exists. It used to be my favorite gum as a kid. Part of the issue for me though is being an adult now I've swapped the gum for potentially more health adverse habits. For example nicotine pouches. Kinda sad but even on a flavor scale the pouches have stronger and longer lasting mint flavors. All this being said maybe I just need to start chewing gum again and drop the other habits but gum just doesn't have that same allure it did as a kid. I find if I chew gum now it's a rather disappointing experience as about 10-20 minutes in it just feels like chewing on wet tasteless rubber.

One of the main reasons people stop chewing as much gum is when aspartame was added. Once that ingredient was added sales dropped about 57% across the board and the sales team banned it on modern political thoughts. They did not want to admit the ingredient that multiples the shelf life by years also took away the flavor. Gum without Aspartame tastes a hundred times better to gum with it. Gum without Aspartame sales increased by 73% alone and the majority of Gum companies have not paid attention to that fact.

I genuinely miss 5 "Lush" (Tropical). It was my favorite tropical gum, and no other tropical gum has quite nailed its particular flavor. Once it disappeared around 2012 I forgot about the 5 gum lineup entirely. "Respawn Tropical Punch" caught my curiosity, but the flavor fell *far* short of Lush. Kinda like how 2010's Axe "Fever" spiced citrus was my favorite body spray ever, yet it disappeared within months, and I never enjoyed another 'citrus' spray remotely as much. And once they ruined my go-to since 2008, "Essence", with an awful reformulation in 2017 I forgot about Axe entirely Ultimately, it just stings when specific perishables I love end up getting discontinued or their existing recipes/formulations get borked... Unlike most possessions such as tech and furniture that will last decades if well cared for, once a food or other consumable stops being produced, they expire in a matter of months and become nothing but a memory; anecdotal evidence like photos and videos being the only thing that I can present to someone who never tried the item in question, and senses like smell and taste can't be communicated -- when trying to convince anyone of the greatness of a discontinued food/drink/etc, all my praises are reduced to an unhelpful "you just had to be there bro"

Turns out a lot of people disliked it, and it hasn't come back since. They did release another pineapple flavor a year later, but it wasn't quite the same. There was also this limited flavor of the Helluva Good dip that was called Nacho Deluxe. It was a french onion dip with some queso and chili spices mixed in. It had a kick to it, but it wasn't overwhelmingly spicy like a lot of the other flavors. Unfortunately, I didn't realize it was limited. The image of intense flavour of the early marketing campaign fits the narrative of excited gamers seeking more stimulation of their senses while playing a game, and even stylistically the sleek, black and almost neon coloured design of the packaging fits into other gaming oriented brands. Also not everybody is chewing gum with an open mouth trying to be as loud as possible like you were in the example. @@greasemonk4576 Extremely convoluted story short, the lore was "We have to make our senses better otherwise we're going to die off as a species", and the various weird things going on in the commercials were "experiments" to expand the limits of human senses. I'm by no means an "expert" on the ARG (like I said, I followed it for a bit, but it was an ARG with real-world physical events that happened literally thousands of miles from where I lived at the time, so there was a bunch of stuff I literally couldn't be part of, and a bunch of stuff I didn't have the technical knowledge to contribute to), and so far I've yet to see anyone actually make a deep-dive style video on it. Mars/Wrigley has a blurb about it on their site if you do a bit of digging, so anyone else that remembers it, especially if they were actually able to participate in the ARG proper, would probably be a better source of info on this.
