Slump Buster - McFly Angler Fly Tying Tutorial

My first trout over 20" on the fly rod was with a Slump Buster fly. If you guys have been watching since the beginning of my channel, you will remember a trip to the Animas river in Durango Colorado. I fished 3 separate days with absolutely no luck. As I was leaving I threw on one of these and tried one last spot on my way back to the car. And sure enough I hooked into what was around a 22-23" brown trout. Amazing fish. From that day forth the Slump Buster held a special spot in my heart, and always seemed to stay in my box.
I like to fish these deep. You can swing them and strip them, which works great. However I find simply dead drifting them and getting them down into deep holes where the big fish linger is one of my favorite techniques. It is a heavy fly, so it fishes deep spots very well.
These are made to look like small baitfish, mainly sculpin. Sculpin have big heads and wide pectoral fins. The large collar on this fly mimics that very well. They are also fish that primarily hang out near the bottom, so this is why I tend to have my best luck fishing this fly deep.

Tied dozens of these in olive. I do a slight variation and don't weight the body, just the cone head, and they are great for getting deep FAST. Love this fly

Great fly! I’ve caught hundreds of fish and won the only 2 tournaments I’ve ever been in on my simple version of it. Olive or Black, either is effective. It’s definitely a confidence fly. There’s always some in my flybox. Thanks McFly! 👍👍🎣

@@McFlyAngler It’s a club tournament. The Club used to be Fredericksburg Flyfishers but we merged with Kerrville and it’s Texas Hill Country Flyfishers now. It’s a team tournament for Rainbows we stock in the winter. I just remembered this year was my 3rd tournament and we took 2nd (my partners fault..of course 😂) But he also uses the Slump buster, he’s the one who showed me it..of course I altered it to my liking and added bit of yellow to the olive. The Morris Mauler is also at the top of my list. Basically a brown and yellow marabou jig. Martin Pursch (I’ve called him Marty McFly for years, coincidentally) who owns Country Flyfisher in Fredericksburg showed me that one. We’re 60 miles NW of San Antonio..swing through sometime. Oh yeah ok, so there is another technique here for that. Ever done a dubbing loop? Try that. That trims the hide off and then you twist it up like a furry hackle in a way. Look up dubbing loops and you will find some tutorials. Actually I think I did this same type fly with that technique. Look for slump buster on my videos and I think I’ve got like 3, one of them is with the dubbing loop

Morning Martie, Mega Thx for this Great video. Since I don’t have any squirrel zonker strips, can I simply trim a small 1/16” or so strip off my squirrel hide for use per your video example?

Yes for sure you can, but that is a pain. Strips aren’t too pricy, I’d personally just buy some but you can cut your own if you want
