I came home from the Vietnam War in August of 1969. This song was just released at that time and I loved it. I went home to Pennsylvania, picked up my wife and we drove all across the USA to my stateside duty station in San Francisco... the home city of Sly & The Family Stone. Every A.M. station was playing this song on our car radio all across the USA. I bet we heard that song about 100 times on that 8-day drive from Harrisburg to San Francisco. And since I had just come home from the war... my wife and I indeed had a "hot time" in that 1969 summertime...!!!

This is perfection. Larry Graham’s bass lines are simultaneously all over the fretboard and right in the pocket. What a groove. Loved this when it came out and it still sounds fresh. Ooh lawd!

@@gl6996 same here. It was too obvious how bad his decline was after a hot streak between 1980-1988. It was over at this point. I will be honest. I hated Prince at first because I felt he was copying Sly Stone too much (I was born in 1955 so I'm from his era) but 1999 convinced me Prince was great and had his own style.

@@Jcrash71 I was born in 1973 and has followed Prince since his 2nd album entitled "Prince" in 1979!! 1999 was a classic but he got more and more weird by the album. He showed glimpses of normalcy in a few songs, but strange nonetheless. Sly was a junkie, but at least it was out there. But with Prince? You just...didn't...know

I was 5 back in 1969, and remember this song being a smash hit on WQAM radio. I loved this song then, and still do at 59, today! I remember family get togethers on the weekends, barbecues, bike riding, and hanging out with friends, and enjoying life thoroughly! Great times, and great music! Sly & The Family Stone will always be a favorite of mine.

One of my favorite things about Sly and the Family Stone is the way they'd each take a line themselves every now and then. You can hear an example in the chorus. The bass singer, Larry Graham, would go on to have quite a solo career in the mid 70s into the 80s.
