I came home from the Vietnam War in August of 1969. This song was just released at that time and I loved it. I went home to Pennsylvania, picked up my wife and we drove all across the USA to my stateside duty station in San Francisco... the home city of Sly & The Family Stone. Every A.M. station was playing this song on our car radio all across the USA. I bet we heard that song about 100 times on that 8-day drive from Harrisburg to San Francisco. And since I had just come home from the war... my wife and I indeed had a "hot time" in that 1969 summertime...!!!

I hated Prince at first because I felt he was copying Sly Stone too much (I was born in 1955 so I'm from his era) but 1999 convinced me Prince was great and had his own style.
