This video explains what happens to objects when you pick them up while holding your hat in your hand. The logistics of this glitch are pretty complicated, but I do my best to explain it.

These types of videos are really cool. It really lets some people understand how games are made and designed. Somewhat, at least.

Thank you. You know, this was probably the glitch that took the most investigation and testing before I felt I completely understood it. I'm guessing a lot of people don't really get what's going on, so I hope everything makes sense now!

I left the HOLP in that spot, and then performed the hat in hand glitch. Next, I went over to every bob-omb in the course and threw them in different directions. They all spawned at the HOLP, but weren't active since Mario wasn't close enough to them. Then once I went close to them, they became active, thereby appearing and moving in their trajectories all in unison.

Yeah, objects won't do anything if you spawn them too far away from you (not even fall). This can actually come in handy, like my video /watch?v=0mob8drwg3o in which I use the fact that the crazy box won't fall until I go close to my advantage, namely by grabbing it before it hits the ground.

Actually you can't do the hat in hand glitch on Cool, Cool Mountain since there are no cap blocks or any place to lose you hat. Also, the baby penguin disappears when it is too far away from you, so teleporting it that far would probably cause it to disappear instantly. But I like the effort!

Are you certain the HOLP is actualy set to the origin by the game code itself? Or is it simply uninitialized, making it possible for it to have any value depending on the state of RAM when you start the game? Emulators normally default uninitialized memory to zero, but not actual consoles.

I'm late to this, but I was screwing around and tested it on my N64 and yeah, it defaults to the same spot in BoB as in this video.

I really appreciate this video! I used to mess with this glitch several years ago, but never really understood entirely how it worked. One of the most popular videos on my old page is of the Bob Omb spawning glitch you showed at the end. Great work!

So the chart for holding objects normally is sort of different from the chart for holding objects while my hat is in my hand. Here are the changes in the second chart apart from the first chart: 1) Bowser is added to the list on the right. 2) The lists are about where they spawn instead of whether the HOLP's placement is updated or not.

That's grammatically correct, though. If you're not sure in that kind of situation, try and re-word the question as a statement. "The HOLP does apply to which objects."

When you said the cork box spawned as a crazy box, i think it has womething to do with the cork box, even when you insert a cork box in toads tool 64, it will look like a smaller crazy box and when you open the game, it will be a normql cork box

What address is the HOLP variable? And what does the "better" debug code do compared to the normal one?

I don't know where it's stored in memory. And the better decode menu lists Mario's position and OBJ count, whereas the normal one lists his speed, the angle of the ground below him, and his "state". Advanced vs normal: imgur.com/1jXd18e vs imgur.com/pKAD9wL

So what happens if you were hypothetically set a holp outside the possible grid? In reality you just can't bring a holp outside the max grid right

A grid is a grid. You can't say it's a max.

It can have a defined limit like the 999 coin _counter_ limit, or a limit in storage size, that is how many bits each co-ordinate can hold like the 255 coin _score_ limit. These would define the maximums of a programmable grid. A HOLP outside the former value would be reset to another value by design, and the latter would probably just reset the value to 0 each time it was "exceeded" by "nature." As shown in the video, HOLPs can exist outside the walls of levels with no problems. HOLPs existing outside the grid couldn't happen. Something would be done to set the HOLP value back to something inside the maximum (like the coin counter and score does) or the program code would likely run into errors compiling. If the grid is sufficiently large enough and/or "safety" measures like with the coin score/counter are programmed in then setting a HOLP outside the maximum should never be practically possible.

Chicken In A Suit It starts at the same position where you last held an object in another course, but it shows up in the course you're in instead.

The Bob-omb itself disappears once Mario grabs the fake, so it's gone. If you throw the fake, nothing happens, because all Mario's holding is an empty slot.

However, the bob-ombs won't update if Mario is too far away from them, so they end up just stuck there. So, when he goes back to near the HOLP's position, all those bob-ombs activate and you get that effect.

IIRC, MIPS is named after the core of the N64, so it should be (though you could argue that MIPS shouldn’t be all caps to avoid confusing the two, but it doesn’t really matter since we know what he meant)

The bob-ombs spawn at the HOLP with the velocity and direction mario gives them, but bob-ombs have a radius outside of which they don't move or load in. So, when Mario flies within range of the bob-ombs' load radius, all of which are centered at the HOLP, they all load in and complete their movement. The movement itself was caused by him releasing them by throwing in different directions.

+Christos Karamanos: Considering that all games use variables, and tons of games out there have some hidden undefined behavior that can cause glitches, combining that with the way these games are coded to stay within memory limitations, I'd say maybe. It really depends on the game and how it's coded, and it doesn't even span just N64 games.

For sure. There's tons of stuff happening behind the scenes, even in something as simple as Pong. Computers aren't smart, you have to strictly define everything you want them to do; sometimes this can lead to interesting glitches.

Yeah, I know, but the amount of stuff discovered for this game is absolutely insane. I guess if people put as much effort into other games, they'd find just as much stuff.

I believe the reason this game has so many glitches is because it is a pioneer of its type. No other large 3D game like this had been created before, so the way they chose to code the physics and graphics of the game was completely founded by the programmers, making them suboptimal strategies and therefore leading to many glitches. Also, they didn't thoroughly bug test the game, leading to many oversights.

I think the N64 was just at that wierd point in time where games started to get very mechanically complex, but the hardware wasn't advanced enough to use a lot of the safeguards we use today. They didn't have a lot of memory/cpu-time to waste on more sanity checks, memory protection, abstractions and the like.
