there's an inherent absurdity in accerelating to inhuman speeds, crossing a complicated grid of universes parallel to our own, invisible and eldritch and empty and void and incomprehensible--and navigating this grid carefully, even casually using terms like "oh, going left 3 parallel universes, then up 5" --just to avoid jumping on platforms

Speed of light takes 91 billion light-years to reach our observable universe... ...Mario just needs 12 hours to travel through 4 universes at once... Hyperspeed of mario will soon be the next measurement after light.

Let's delve further. 91 billion light years = 2.7281114e+19 (2.7~ to the 19th) 2.7281114e+19 / 4 (one universe for mario)= 6.8202785e18 (6.8~ to the 18th) 6.8202785e18 / 12 (to get actual speed) = 5.68356542e17 (5.7~ to the 17) Thus, Mario can move about 5.68356542e17 miles per hour. Truly fascinating. This combines so many tricks that are cool on their own. ...and I totally love anything PU-related. It's insane how much time and passion you spend just to decrease the A presses by 0.5 - 3:52 this movement looks so unusual since the modulo position moves opposite to the BLJ direction you are used to. PU-movement really makes you think 5D ^.^
@pannenkoek20129 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I move relatively forwards or backwards depending on whether I have less or more than the syncing speed, respectively. So on the 6th triangle, my first movement was relatively backwards (more than the syncing speed) but then the next two movements are relatively forward (less than the syncing speed), since I passed through the syncing speed during the fast forward.
@Lugmillord9 жыл бұрын
pannenkoek2012 Thanks for the reply (although you already perfectly explained it in the commented video). I have one question though (out of pure interest) - what was the highest speed you ever used so far? In one video you had a syncing speed of over 100 QPU which sounds really incredible but did you try out how far you can go, e.g. up until you reach an overflow?
@pannenkoek20129 жыл бұрын
I think you're confusing my speed with how far I travel. The speed is just how many QPUs I move per frame. So if I have enough speed to move 1 QPU per frame and I hold it for 25 frames, then I'll move 25 QPUs (or 100 PUs), and I believe the displacement is the number you saw, since I list this out on the PU map screen.
@pannenkoek20129 жыл бұрын
For your second question: As you move to further and further away PUs, the precision of the floats (use for Mario's position) decreases. Eventually, Mario can't even move around since the distance between allowed points is too great for him to go from one to another. Even further out, Mario can only stand at that PU's origin - the only allowed point in that PU. After that, only every 2nd PU is accessible, and later every 4th PU, and then every 8th PU, etc.
@Lugmillord9 жыл бұрын
pannenkoek2012 Thanks for the very quick response. I already thought that floating point accuracy eventually becomes an issue. At which distance does this become an issue? Is traversing ~100 PUs already challenging or does this problem only occur much farther away?

There aren't infinite PU's, because remember that PU's existence is due to a difference between Mario's position variables, one of which is stored as a short and the other a float. The float will also eventually overflow to 0 at the same time the short does, re-syncing the values of the variables.

If Mario's normal running speed is about 3m/s, then 1spd is about 0.1m/s, therefore 479006 spd=47900.6m/s, which is 141 times faster than the speed of sound in water, but 6300 times slower than the speed of light. At this point, assuming a mass of about 60kg, his kinetic energy is about 69 gigajoules, in which case, preventing his movement over the span of a second would require 10% of the power of the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.
@MariaNicolae8 жыл бұрын
We can be a bit more precise than that. Mario is 161 units tall, so it's safe to assume that 1 unit = 1cm, or somewhere abouts. A speed unit is a distance unit per frame. So, when Mario runs at his normal speed (31), he's moving 31 cm a frame, or 9.3 meters a second. 479006 speed is 4790.06 meters per frame, or 143701.8 m/s. That's right, 143.7 km/s. So, assuming his mass is average for a human male (he's a bit shorter than normal, but also a bit fatter, so these probably cancel out), we get our formula for kinetic energy: mass/2 * velocity^2 =75/2 * 143702^2 =37.5 * 20650264804 =774384930150 Joules, or 774 Gigajoules, or 1.2% of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. BTW, 69 GJ isn't 10% of Little Boy's power, it's 0.1% To me, this puts in perspective how destructive this bomb was, and how devastating modern nukes are.

according to all known laws of super mario 64 there is no way someone should be able to beat a level in 0.5 a presses." A a press is an A press. You cant say its only half. " -TJ "Henry" Yoshi

pannenkoek2012, of course, beats levels in 0.5 A presses anyway. Because pannenkoek2012 doesn't care what TJ "Henry" Yoshi thinks is impossible.

This man just transcended reality to get a star in another room without jumping
@JaneSable9 жыл бұрын
I've just discovered this for the first time. Can someone explain this to me? Is this a common thing in games? To get through something while never doing something specific? Why the A button, is it just because jumping is such a key element to Mario games?
@QwertyuiopThePie9 жыл бұрын
+Marsha Oakley Yeah, it's a sort of fun challenge to see how you can bend the game to do things like this. It's similar to speedrunning.
@JaneSable9 жыл бұрын
QwertyuiopThePie I figured as much, thanks!

4 years late, its fun because the game gives you a main mechanic (jumping in this case) And you just go *no*

What happens if you do a double-jump with QPU speed? Do you go millions of units high?
@SerialBull8 жыл бұрын
AFAIK the speed is horizontal only.
@MariaNicolae8 жыл бұрын
Cease Crismon The height of a double-jump is proportional to your horizontal speed. In essence, they convert horizontal speed to vertical speed.

Timestoppa on KZbin Oh, thanks for letting me know.
@xicao37228 жыл бұрын
I think the game would crash if the speed is forwards, otherwise you will jump downwards and reduce the speed.
@sat716018 жыл бұрын
If Mario speed synced up with a vertical PU he would travel to the vertical PU although because there is no floor to stand on in vertical PU's so upon falling below floor level the game would crash.

@CShep993 жыл бұрын
i understand that the ceiling and wall are keeping mario in place to build up speed but what's keeping him stationary once he has left when you're decreasing speed? and how are you releasing him once you reach a desired speed?
@lashybean3 жыл бұрын
Mario’s being kept stationary because if he moves with such great speed he’ll go out of bounds, so he simply doesn’t move, and he gets released on his own when his speed decreases/angle changes to allow him to be in bounds… I think
@CShep993 жыл бұрын
@@lashybean yeah after some more research it appears you're right. he just angles Mario so that he isn't hitting another universe (which is easy since there's so much out-of-bounds around the levels) then once he reaches the desired speed he quickly rotates to line it up, jumps, and then quickly rotates again to misalign it so as to keep from jumping multiple times. simple concept but requires some high precision movements.

what stops mario from standing on the elevator? curious, as that is the whole reason for the half a press.
@MariaNicolae7 жыл бұрын
When Mario's pushing against out of bounds, he simply won't snap to floors. So, Mario won't follow the elevator up.
