I think a lot of kids today fail to realize that these guys weren't doing tricks they saw some kid land on youtube or street league. They were inventing them and raising the bar for the next level and generation. The kids that talk shit on the original won't be skating much longer. If you don't respect it, you don't love it. It takes a lot of love to keep beating your self up skating for years and years.

The irony is Jesse was probably more well known here still than Lee was. Lee was the new guy, a top am establishing himself. Jesse's heyday had been 2-3 years earlier ... he was a launch ramp/handplant/wall ramp guy who ruled the Venice Beach scene with aggression and flamboyant style. But he stuck around for a few years more as he was the first pro to hook up with Rocco at the dawn of WI, when it was "SMA Rocco Division".

I'm sure skateboarding feels just as good today as it does in the 80s and 90s. Still, I'm glad I got to be a part of the evolution era of it. At this point the game is set, skateboarding can't really evolve any further than it has and it's been that way for years. Everything was all new during my generation. And it was simply a different time. And sure I'm biased but so is everyone.

Mike V's back lip was gnarly as hell. I would much rather try that on a rail 10 times as high than a curb high one. Just asking to clip the floor and go back flipping. His style was so rad even back then. Fast and you could see he was genuinely skating for the feeling of it. Crazy to think that these dudes were paving the groundwork for all of us today. Pioneers, artists. I could only imagine how wild their minds must have worked, thinking of all the potential new things to try and things to innovate. If these dudes had the boards and the quality ramps that we have now back then, they would have been skating just as good as we do nowdays. That quarter that Jason Lee 360 flip fakied on looked like it was made of paper.

There will always be dumb kids who can't appreciate anything that isn't full of flippidy-doo-da switch stuff, but there are a lot of kids who are smart enough to understand and appreciate the classics (as evidenced by all the young pros who've thrown a bit of old school into their bag of tricks).

The difference is in 1989 the people who could loft a 360 ollie off a ramp like that numbered in single digits; now thousands could do it. One thing I'm not sure young skaters today are aware of if they were watching ... boards were significantly heavier back then - it was harder to defy gravity!

Doesn't anybody know how to deinterlace video before they export it?
@StickyManMaxxx10 жыл бұрын
what's that?
@garyacey10 жыл бұрын
StickyManMaxxx I don't know if you are being a smartass or not, so if you really don't know, when you import old analog video (like old VHS and Betamax tapes like this footage was originally recorded on) into a computer and you are going to view it on a computer or some other progressive scan format display, the interlaced analog video will show annoying horizontal lines (watch as the skaters skate by, especially when the camera is panning quickly, and look at the kids sitting on curbs or other stationary things in the shots like the buildings or the ramps). It's especially noticeable if you pause the video and watch a freeze-frame of an fast motion shot. If you have the capability to import analog video to digital, whatever software you are using to export the files digitally should have the capability to de-interlace the video, making it "progressive scan" and removing most of these annoying lines and flicker (although you still will probably be able to tell it's old analog video, it's not quite as annoying to watch). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deinterlacing
@StickyManMaxxx10 жыл бұрын
Gary Acey no I was asking seriously! I looked around but most articles/sites like to be a tad over descriptive...so thanks for the explanation. I'm editing a load of Hi8 tape footage so I'm guessing it's the same
@clytor10 жыл бұрын
Gary Acey I definitely see it. Weird, I haven't actually watched this in a while. Did the default KZbin viewer window get bigger? I feel like it's less noticeable in a smaller window. Anyway, I need to look into de-interlacing this. It is annoying. I have a bunch of other demos to import. I unfortunately only have an older version of iMovie right now. I don't know when I will be able to pick up a copy of Final Cut. If you have any tips or suggestions, Gary, please let me know.
