That "crash" on 10:18 has happen to me a couple of times on a desktop PC with a GTX 770. This usually happens when the video driver crashes or freezes and Windows tries hard to recover from it. The side effect is that the game window crashes o minimizes and then you see the desktop while Windows tries very hard to recover the game window. It sometimes gives an error that says... "Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered..." on the bottom right of the screen. That means that they are using a video driver that is either not fully optimized for whatever system they are running or are using super outdated drivers.

Yeah, I used to have that problem with an older graphics card, too. I think it was a 480, but I'm not sure. I gave the card away to a friend and ge gets the issue only very sparringly, so it might have been either an issue with components nit playing nice with each other, or some setting on my PC. I struggled with the issue for quite a bit and tried all kinds of drivers, from the most current ones to specific versions someone on the get claimed to fix the problem. Whatever the underlying cause, the behavior stems from Windows (starting with Win7 I think) dealing with driver triuble in a new way. When it doesn't get feedback from the GPU fast enough, it will assume the driver crashed and restart it. The problem is that in some configurations, the graphics kit wasn't meant to respond that quickly. So it didn't actually have a problem, Win was just too impatient.

@@KaeYoss You are thinking of the Video TDR error that sometimes crashes newer versions (Vista and up) of Windows. This is different from what was previously described as the TDR error always results in a complete crash of Windows. There's a program that allows you to adjust the TDR timing for longer periods if this is a persistent issue. With the display driver crashing and restarting, that's a separate issue. Often it's caused by driver problems but occasionally it's hardware-related. My guess is that if they're using an APU it probably needs better drivers than they're using, or they're just pushing the hardware too far and causing instability. Which, by the way, if that's the case then that speaks REALLY POORLY about their hardware choice or the implementation of it if they have this much trouble running Doom at such low settings.

@@StopDropRetro Hadn't had any issues with drivers on ryzen. AMD publishes the drivers themselves for mainstream APUs since the laptop driver fiasco (2500U and 2700U lappys didn't get proper drivers from OEMs and as such the devices had annoying unsolved issues) but iirc this is a V1605B so the Embedded variant of the chip, which seemingly has a different driver than the 2500U it is based on. ETA Prime has released a video on the UDOO Bolt which uses the same chip and ran better. What intrigues me is why they don't run the plain simple retail version of the APU, the 2500U. They could put 2400MHz ddr4 modules with it (which would help since the problem with APU is bandwith starvation) but the specs on the website say that it's 2133. They could even have put it in single channel which would make it run like in the video. But the other reason why it could run this much like dog shit is surely TDP restriction, the chip must run at like 5 watts and not stretch its legs to its 15W base tdp.

That Doom 2016 crash? That's a video driver crash and recovery. There's no doubt there. Since they didn't write their own drivers for this it means it's most likely a hardware fault. The two strongest possibilities for causing that are an overheat or a power fault. Either is possible, but there's a few reasons to suspect it's a power fault. The first is the red light, which apparently indicates a low battery. This looks to be a simple voltage-sensor on the main power bus, but more on that later. The second is the tech saying that the blue screen was caused by a low battery. While there's no reason to implicitly trust the tech, this makes total sense if the unit doesn't have active power correction or a low-voltage cutoff. Voltage drops as draw increases, and in the case of batteries voltage also decreases as the battery is drained. In a properly made device the system will shut off when the power source can't provide it with the voltage it needs and it can't correct the voltage. Without those measures, when a battery gets low any variation in draw is going to cause a voltage dip, which will drop one component or another under its operating voltage and cause that component to behave in unexpected ways. If the GPU drops too low, the GPU will enter a fault state and the drivers will restart the GPU. While in this fault state it will stop updating the framebuffer, which will result in the last rendered frame being stuck on-screen. When the GPU is restarted it will drop from the high-clocked 3D mode to idle clocks, which in turn drops its power consumption. As stated before, when draw increases voltage decreases, and the inverse is also true - a drop in draw will increase voltage. When the light switched from red to blue is when the GPU restart began, the GPU clocks dropped to idle, and the bus voltage increased as a result. On the software side the restart forces it into 2D mode first - which is why the desktop popped up - before it tries to enable 3D clocks. Further: Since lithium batteries have extremely high power density, a more or less flat voltage curve, and can take a lot of draw with very little voltage drop, this tells me that they're running their batteries down to zero. No sane product runs a lithium battery down to zero. Aside from the problems described above, this does serious damage to the battery. The 0% charge point on devices is usually closer to 10%. By the same token the 100% charge point is generally about 95% for similar reasons, except that one of the possible side effects of overcharging is known as "fire". It's a good thing these prototype units are only going to be used a few times, because while it would be entertaining I would rather not see news reports of E3 evacuating due to Smach-Z accidentally setting off an incendiary device and triggering the fire systems. Fortunately, since it can't charge while in use it won't kill anybody.

Great comment, and thanks for sharing your insights on device architecture, it all makes sense. I'd add a little corollary as a conclusion on battery management. If this poorly hardware managed unit comes out to the market with the batteries being drained flat, it will be no time before the batteries die since Li-Ion's lifespan will be dramatically shortened, resulting in units that can't be used for long. I'm writing this in 2022, so I've no idea how things are at this moment. Anyone know about Smach Z in 2022? Thanks! Edit: it seems to be dead in the water. The Embedded Ryzens (which Smach uses) are still based on Zen + Vega (which ist the 2017 Ryzen iteration of Zen) like the APUs that appeared early last year (named Athlon 200GE, Ryzen 3 2200G, Ryzen 5 2400G). The newer APUs AMD in released when Ryzen 3000 (Zen2) Released are still based on Zen+ + Vega (which is the 2018 Ryzen iteration of Zen) opposed to Zen2 + Vega let alone Zen2 + Navi (which I would expect around when the next XBOX launches in Holiday season 2020)

You're dealing with software written for a computer that's significantly faster than this, while on a Switch they'll tweak and micro-optimise things to make do with a less power-hungry but also ultimately significantly slower hardware - and chances are, at the same performance level, the Switch version will end up looking same or better.

From the discord, already know many of the flaws in this prototype. Battery life of 74 minutes at 15w, should be much shorter at 25w. The prototype he received had much bigger 50wh battery than stock LMAO. He can't see the Bios with the internal display, no brightness controls, no custom remapping tool for the controller so every game he has to remap manually and set mouse sensitivity, had to undervolt and reduce to 2 cores in Bios to keep temps down and increase performance, the usual Ryzen tweak tools does not work, etc.

A handheld PC is a great idea. Just don't try to emulate M&K in any meaningful way. Stick to games that work with a controller. I don't know, maybe some of the stuff that is usually played "classic PC style" can work well with a handheld emulating mouse input, but definitely not all. The advantage of the Switch (and other handheld consoles that came before) is that the games are tailored to it. They make use of its unique features where appropriate. They properly utilize the touch screen and motion controls where applicable. Until PCs get a proper standard for such features, any attempt at a handheld PC will be limited in its use as a matter of course - even if they produce a piece of kit that doesn't have performance and/or battery life problems.

yeah thats what i would say as the same thing happened when i was testing OCs for my GTX 1060, it could be an amd driver problem causing it or the Ryzen SoC might not be getting enough power or the power is unstable due to the battery

@@StopDropRetro It looks like what happened is that the GPU was overclocked too high. It had some instability and probably a momentary drop of voltage (which is susceptible more on battery devices than regular PSU-PC's). It doesn't look like it was a result of overheating. The voltage drop caused the device to shift from "Performance Mode" to "Battery Saver", and you can see video driver to crash as a result, which is actually a common occurrence in Windows (especially on PC's with cheap OEM motherboards). I think Smach has fixed this issue, by not overclocking the iGPU anymore, and using any extra thermal room to clock the CPU higher instead. Anandtech did several articles looking into this a while ago. Honestly, this brings the performance of the Smach Z very close to that of the GPD Win2, but with less efficiency/battery life. I'm certain we will get better Mobile-APU (aka SoC's) next year with either: - 10nm Intel Ice-Lake 4c/8t, Iris-48 GPU (eg Core i5-1030G4) - 7nm AMD Zen2 4c/8t, Navi-8 GPU (eg Ryzen V2605B)

There's news over on the SMACH Z subreddit btw.! Or better - there's _no_ news except it seems the Super SMACH Brothers missed yet another delivery date. Apparently, shipment should have started in December, but instead of issuing any official statement to their backers they stated in an interview held in Spanish that delivery would now take place in Q1'20. Good video as always, SD&R. This one's approximately a year old and I'm not sure why I'm only just now seeing it, even though I'm subscribed to the channel, but any Smach Z news is timeless and entertaining to me. What isn't timely anymore is the whole mobile steam machine concept these people have been plugging away and beating their heads at for nearly a decade. Seriously, does anyone really even still care for buying a separate low-spec handheld device to play PC games on anymore? Even a fairly good one like the GPD Win series? I'm sure they have their niche uses for some but, between Steam's Steam Link app, Xbox doing their thing with XCloud and console streaming and whatever Google Stadia has up their sleeve, streaming games to phones and other remote/mobile devices that people **already** own is going to be the preferred way to go for many. I've already tried Steam Link and XCloud myself and both are *really* solid with a good connection. Not "flawless", but getting a LOT better. All they need (and is already happening) is for the existing mobile network infrastructure to catch up with the demand for streaming high performance games to a mobile device and, sooner than later, the smartphone that's already in most people's pocket (paired with a clipped on controller, of course) will burn and dust away anything the Smach Z or PGS is likely to do. I'm starting to feel a little sorry for these crooked, inept bozos and anyone who believes them..........but not really. Anyway, hope you're well. I haven't seen anything new from you since the year started, so I'm hoping you're still alive and the virus (or the Russian mafia) hasn't gotten you yet.

That crash was 100% graphics card related. The same behavior can be replicated on any computer with an improperly configured (overclock or underclocked) graphics card. It will go to desktop to "reset" and attempt to go back to the games screen resolution. You can see that the black window, which is the game screen, only took a portion of the screens total display size. This signifies that the desktop resolution is higher then the game resolution.

Problem, the switch actaully has an appropriate built in upscaler for when games do drop low and they push for variable resolution if people can't meet the 720p of the screen. They've taken their(better screen) and given it a much better fighting chance.

Do you have any plans to review the DragonBox Pyra from the OpenPandora guys ? Sure, it's a real product with real prototypes, and looks like it will finally release soon... But it's been stuck in development hell for so long that it is also outclassed by the GPD Win and other handhelds.

The battery running out doesn't BSOD a device. What happens exactly depends on the OEM. Usually, at some % or lower, the system shuts down and displays a "low power" screen as it turns off. A BSOD would imply there's some bigger issue. Maybe there's a driver conflict between the battery, and Windows?
