It is fairly common to rent suites near conventions instead of purchasing a booth. A lot of companies do it, even some of the bigger ones. The reason can vary, though. Sometimes it's just cheaper, sometimes it is to restrict access to people they actually want there, sometimes they don't have enough to show to justify a booth but still want a presence at the convention/conference. In the case of Smach it is probably all of those things.

Ooof. I, until just very recently, worked in an industry where I would split off at the dawn of trade-shows to create analogs of devices to show to investors. Essentially they were fakes, and we presented them as such, as in dev models just to show what it could do and intended to accomplish. When I saw this, I could immediately started going through my back-catalogues of displays of where they got that screen from. The controls in that hidden room meeting were just a steam controller cut in half. That was obvious, but that screen _is_ the entire rest of the unit, and I bet it was still in its enclosure. It distinctly reminds me of a mini-DP 1080p screen that we sourced from a hybrid Chinese/German company that excelled at producing those displays. Just seeing that, and then seeing all the fan boys around the net who still really think this is a thing bothers me, because no matter how much I can show how the thing was built, how it doesn't work, my qualifications to speak on the subject, and other things, these people stay so blinded by this need to have it that they'll fight for it tooth and nail.

Never heard of it until now, just checked their website: Selling price was set in April 2016, and basically "you'll know when it's for sale when we open the online store." The website is not very informative, just a feature list and vague FAQs that answers most questions half-@$$ed or not at all. Quotes from two PC reviewers, one quote is 4 words, the other, 2 words, all of which can be easily taken out of context. Not exactly inspiring, which is a pity, because the hardware specs (if true) has me really excited for their April 2016 price of $650. A lot more phone to offer for roughly half the price of an iPhone 10.

Oh Saygus, that's a spicy story. In the Android community Kickstarter phones are a meme, and Saygus may be the most hilarious of them all. I believe they started their campaign in 2015 when Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 was the most powerful Android CPU, and since then promised upgrades every year to the newest chip without shipping a single thing. Back when the Smach Z was announced, the GPD Win was on equal terms with it. The Nintendo Switch, and any other traditional handheld, has a very restrictive and overpriced library of games, whereas those of us with thousands of games in our steam library could truly cut loose with a working Smach Z. Unfortunately it went belly up, and those of us who aren't tech experts wouldn't have been able to predict that. There was already a risk, being a Kickstarter. Luckily, those people can get their money back from the bank, like I did, with a cashback.

Slight correction about the Steam Controller: official support will never die off. The Steam Controller Configuration is now one of the main most updated parts of Steam. They use it to support basically every controller that can be connected to a PC. It has also sold according to their expectations and they are working on a new iteration of it. Same applies to the Steam Link. They are selling it off cheap because they are currently working on a 4K iteration.

At the time, GPD Win 1 and Smach Z were considered similar. The gamers preferred the button layout and the simpler design of the Smach. Both use games from the Steam library. Now, I don't know about you, but over the years, I have amassed hundreds of games on Steam, so that rules out the Nintendo Switch, as I'd be restricted to a small library of currently overpriced games. The allure of Smach Z was very real to me. Luckily I got my money back from the bank with a cashback.
