I love the Beach Boys and have had the pleasure of hanging out with Brian on two occasions, in 2002 and 2005, which for me was a bit like being invited to take tea and crumpets with Christ himself. I have to say, though, as a lifelong session player myself, that working with the band during this era must have been a nightmare for the sidemen. I’m no Mike apologist but he and Al are the glue here. Dennis is the most together Wilson brother but even he is obviously soused. Carl seems to be detached from reality (and, weirdly for him, the concept of pitch and phrasing) and poor Brian looks to be conducting a kickfight with his demons in real time, often mid song. This setlist is absolutely killer, but it would have broken my heart to share a stage with these guys and watch the creators of this, my favourite music of all time, destroy it in front of my eyes. I’m so glad that Brian eventually found recovery and some peace and creativity in his later post-Landy years. I saw him countless times with his superb solo band and loved every show. I wish Carl and Dennis were still with us and had found a similar route through and out of the awful maze of addiction and self destruction.

I adore The Beach Boys, and the fact that Carl was totally trashed, and Brian was on the verge of a psychotic episode during every frame of this concert is tribute to the professionalism of Dennis of all people. Al Mike and the others truly were the foundation because the Wilson boys save Dennis to reiterate were in bad shape. When Carl says #BigGuy before they start "Surfer Girl" i don't know whether to laugh or cry.

This was my first tour that I ever saw of the band. (Iowa State Fair in August). I was 13 years old and I was in heaven. Heard Brian’s music for the first time three years prior at the ripe old age of ten and now at the age of 56, the music is as much a part of my soul as any influence in my life. God bless Brian Wilson. He is a survivor and thankfully he was finally able to realize after so many years how many people were touched by his music. Thanks for posting.

Saw Brian and Al and Alan's son perform the entirety of Pet Sounds during the 50th anniversary tour in 2016, and it was one of the greatest experiences to get to see the creator and his remaining loyals at his side perform live perhaps one of the greatest contributions to the rock and music pantheon Al really proved his worth, I have and will continue to have nothing but total respect for Al Jardine. I never fully realized or connected the dots till like a few years back that he is the one singing Help Me Rhonda and Heroes and Villains etc etc

It cannot be just sodium and potassium ions that are energising Mike Love's dancing in the last three numbers. His hand and general coordination remind of Mick Jagger and Joe Cocker and that was full-on chemicals. But it's still highly entertaining on video five decades later. RMY

The technical quality of the recording aside, this is a fabulous capture of the 1970s road show. No question they were better in the early 70s and were more mechanical by this time, but they were still one of the best live shows around. Interesting to me is how animated Brian was in this show. In the first go-round of the Brian’s Back fiasco he looked like a deer caught in the headlights. Also, most of the dozen times I saw them during this period, Carl was more obviously the glue who was holding them together. Here it seems like a more evenly balanced effort.

Unfortunately that’s the time for that Carl was into the rough patch that he was dealing with ( heroin & whatever else? ) .. Brian was in la la land & that time that Dennis had calm down for 1-2 yrs after he got married 2 x had a little boy ( unfortunately it didn’t last ) then he had to face demons the same which later in 1983 would take his life ! At a young age of 36 ! 1st DENNIS then 2nd was Carl he passed when he was 51 in 1985 ( from the big C) RIP both You Brothers 🙏❤️., ironic Brian (took LSD, pills 💊 h hash) for years to the point he didn’t leave his room hardly for 3 yrs & his weight went up to 300 lbs., Brian súrcame & fought thru Depression & is still on meds ( the drugs really messed him up ) but he never lost his gift as a well known as a (Genius ) producer , composer , lyricist & making more music , music is what kept him alive ( but he he received help from many all his family got involved ) he had to get properly get off the drugs ( which he went thru hell & back ) a lot in that phase it’s completely a blank., but the Lord helped him & he stayed as the only BEACH BOYS ( the brothers ) he’s still alive ., though many thought he would die , but he had a great support system began the late 80 ‘s to date ( still doing music) .. everyone thought he’d wouldn’t make it , he would pass … ironically he was the only one of the Wilson’s brother the Genius ( 1 out of the 3 brothers & 1out of original 5 ) Beach boys prodigy to make it thru ( Mike & Al also alive ) But he must feel alone though thru that time & up to date , MAKING MUSIC is what he says keeps him going ..I wish u Brian, continue success!! Dennis & Carl will always be by your side & are ( your special 😇’s ) .. love ❤️ your music always & still do

Another incredible part of seeing this as my first Beach Boy tour experience at the ripe old age of 13 was the presence of Charles Lloyd on stage as a touring member of the band. He is highlighted at 1:07:00 when the band does ‘Feel Flows’. I knew I was hearing something special but it would take me a few years to realize just how lucky I was to see this man as part of the tour that year. If I had to choose an era or year to see them, I always say I would have loved to have been able to see them in 1971 or 1972 touring with Blondie and Rickie. Still pretty damn lucky to have seen them on this tour to began my journey of Wilson Brother Shows over the years. I thank the heavens for all of the wonderful live music I have been fortunate to have heard over the years. I was truly fortunate to begin that journey with this tour. Wilson Brothers have made the world a more beautiful place with their gifts of music.

Just my opinion, possibly their greatest on stage lineup-the 1977 to 1980 era. The Father, The Son, The Holy Ghost, all 3 in FINE form here. Brian at the tail end of his ‘second creative period’ in full battle, slaying his personal demons, confident, happy and SMiLE-ing on stage. FANTASTIC song lineup. Despite the mountain of off stage issues threatening to tear this band apart during this time, their MONSTROUS talent and far reaching, soul soothing body of work drowns out the noise and makes the world a happier place for a few hours here. Watching and listening to Brian happily plinking out the ‘Boogie Woogie’ on the piano is reason enough to love this show. Thanks for uploading:)

My enthusiasm for the “real” Beach Boys (and yes, I include, when present, both Bruce Johnston and David Marks when I say “real”), gets the best of me. You’re right in your assessments. The 1976-81 time period imo, was the most difficult trying period in the band’s’ history. Not the preceding years where Brian basically checked out and stayed in bed, and not the ‘81-present “never ending lawsuit” period which sees Brian finally finding his true self, settling into a comfort zone and reclaiming his life, as well as the fragmentation of the band into separate yet sometimes fluid camps, not to mention the tragic 1983 death of brother Dennis. The 1976-81 period is at once desperately hopeful and hopelessly sinister in it’s vision and scope; Brian is scooped up out bed and thrust into intensive therapy with some seeking to save his life while others were no doubt trying to save ‘The Band’. The plus side of this is, Brian’s life was indeed ‘saved’ and he created some wonderful music during this time, including the mostly misunderstood masterpiece ‘The Beach Boys Love You’. The down side was Brian was unwillingly thrust to the forefront of the ill fated “Brian’s Back” campaign, something he was clearly not ready for nor comfortable with. He was being manipulated. Witness the 7-4-80 (NOT ‘81), The 7-4-80 Washington DC show. IMO, their greatest ever live concert with ALL (excluding D Marks) of the ‘Brothers, Cousins and Friends’ onstage together performing a killer set in front of 500,000 ravenous fans. Brian doesn’t seem too ‘thrilled’ to be there. In fact, in some of the camera angles, if you look closely across the stage from Brian, hanging high in the stage rafters out of view of the massive crowd but clearly in Brian’s sightline.., you’ll see a plain white sign that reads ‘DON’T PANIC’. Throughout the show you can also catch glimpses of Al Jardine looking nervously cautious at Brian..., once or twice he even catches Brian’s eye and just barely off mic asks Brian “Are you ok?”, “You alright?” Long story short.., more often than not, during the ‘76-‘81 period you’ll see Brian onstage staring at his feet, ignoring the audience, not even pretending to play. So when I said ‘Fine form’ I should have also said “on a sliding scale”. During that period “3” out of the original “5” (or 6) onstage were either drunk, full on ‘wet’ alcoholic’s, druggies, hard drug users, not “well” with major psychological illness..., any combination. Yet THIS show, well everything seems alright or at least “ok”. Brian ‘seems’ happy to be there.., and if THEY were able to escape the real life horror show that their lives had become, for 2 short hours, JUST through their love for the wonderful music that they were putting across to those fans on that night..., I’ll take that 2 hour escape as well. Because I LOVE ‘my boys’ and the ability of their music to allow me to escape reality once in a while. Nothing beats sitting on the east coast while my head visits ‘The Girls on the Beach’ in California, or safely contemplating the meaning of my life un’Til I Die’ from ‘In My Room’. ☺️Sorry Lol, long answer..., you’re right, but I’ll take the good that did wind up shaking itself free from those bad times and keep it close to my soul.

@@MIKELIN8 You’re correct, I recall reading/hearing the exact same thing. I don’t deny the talent and the fantastic sounds that the Ricky/Blondie era Beach Boys made. By the mid-late 70’s ‘that’ band and their more inventive approach was gone, as the Boys revamped their live sets towards a ‘greatest hits’ approach, and as uninspiring as that sounds.., “that’s” the live band (76-81) that I like best. Bottom line, to my ears, they just sounded more confident as opposed to sheepishly introducing and explaining each ‘new’ song during the Ricky/Blondie era (which were all songs powerful enough to proudly present without the ‘apologies’. OMG, THE TRADER!!). My first memories of hearing ‘then current’ live Beach Boys are from that era..., so that’s a warm fuzzy childhood feeling cop-out. But consider this.., July 4th, 1980.., in front of 500,000 people: Did they ever get closer to the Spector “wall of sound” that Brian was so awestruck by, live, on stage, than they did ‘that’ day with ‘that’ band?

My third concert I ever went to. 13 years old. Unforgettable and the first of many seeing The Beach Boys. I always thought I would replace one of them as a singer. Any show The Beach Boys perform Feel Flows is an amazing show. While they certainly were in the beginning of their nostalgia “jukebox” period, they didn’t totally abandon those progressive deep cuts yet.

Group was a mess in the late seventies with drugs and drink but put together some great performances. Saw them in Philly 1976 with about a million other people before they jetted to DC to play before 500000 on same day! Knebworth England June 1980 was fabulous and capped the seventies for the ‘Boys!

That was July 4th 1985. Played Live Aid @ JFK stadium 11 days later.

Clearly these were the 70s in almost all of the ways chemically possible, lol probably ludes, coke and herb and drinks, I know this was the band and Brian's biggest cocaine period, I mean '77 was a peak year for the ''Cocaoinea'' if there ever was one one, between the LA snow blizzard and NY flurries with Studio 54 etc. Salad days indeed. Glad Brian got clean and healthy and such a shame Dennis would drown during drinking heavily (I think they called it a shallow water blackout as he was trying to look for things on the dock that his ex had thrown or dropped into the water) and then with Carl passing in 1998 from lung cancer, fuck, those guys should still be around. Love and Long Live Rock N Roll and LIVE music and the magic memory making music of The Beach Boys.

What a circus the group was at that time. Carl and Brian had worse demons than Dennis at the time. The only good part was Love was terrified of Dennis who looked like he wanted to kill him.

I saw the BBs a couple of times in the 60s...and then many times in following decades. If you missed them in the 60s, then you didn't get to know how good just the 5 of them were and how disciplined their performances were. This is just a 70s gig.

Carl had a great studio voice. Here it's a little patchy but it could be due to a number of things. I've always liked "Feel Flows". There's a number of cover versions here on YT, some are pretty remarkable, also.
