Actually solar makes zero sense for a plain 3-hander watch. There is no reason not to use a larger battery. Some people do, Casio for example has many analog quartz movement that use a large 2016 battery which Casio rates to years but it’s reported to last 13-15. ETA and Ronda also have 10 year rated quartz movements (ETA 955 is know to last over 12 years) and also Seiko did made for example the 8F33 Perpetual Calendar quartz movement that is rated for at least 10 years of battery. And with this watches, you can use them and store them however you like. Solar watches only last as long if they are kept in perfect conditions, not too much in full sun, not too much in dark places, otherwise the battery deteriorates fast and it costs at 6-7 times to replaced compared to a normal, large battery. With normal quartz watches, you can have a true metal dial instead of a plastic one made to look like metal. Solar is just a marketing gimmick (think Citizen Eco-Drive), if you look at most quartz movements, there is no reason not to be able to fit a larger normal battery that will result in a better, more reliable watch. Taking the Solar route ups the cost while resulting a worse experience, so I can only assume it is pure marketing. Solar does make sense in power hungry watches, like GPS and RC watches, watches that have automatic backlight etc, because those watches can barely make it 2-3 years even with large batteries like a CR2016.

@d3xmeister2 жыл бұрын
@@m1abrams1776 Sort of. It does solve most issues but it’s still kinda pointless because if they will just put a larger normal battery, it will be cheaper to produce, much cheaper and easier to replace battery when the time comes, and again, you’d have a metal dial which generally looks better and is more reliable. Again, exceptions being power hungry watches (multiple functions etc) and probably small ladies watches where you just can’t fit a larger battery

Wow, a solar quartz for JUST under $500 -- gosh, how does Seiko do it? Honestly, I grew up (in the 60's and 70's) watching my dad buy multiple Seiko's. They were inexpensive (relative to other options), they were well made, and thus felt like a superb value. I've tried to follow in dad's "Seiko footsteps"; but it's getting harder and harder. Perhaps I'm being too hard on the brand that I want so much to return to it's roots; but I guess you really "can't go home again" (so to speak). Thanks for the video Marc -- well done, as always -- and thank you for the Islander line....I appreciate someone stepping in (and up) to pick up the "value baton".

The solar cell is a replaceable part and completely comparable to replacing a regular cell (just don't mix them up). In the Casio/G-shock world its not uncommon to be getting 15-20 years or more out of a rechargeable cell and I would expect this to be the same, as they'll almost certainly be the same/similar 3rd party manufacturer.
