True. For 2012 to many 2014s excluding the Camry and a few more vehicles, the Toyotas did not do well in that test. Now, Toyota is revamping the structures of their already poor rated vehicles, improving their result.

these tests were conducted by IIHS (not EuroNCAP), the main difference is that they evaluate the integrity of the structure of the car after the impact and then they estimate the consequence that such an impact could have on the driver using "poor, marginal, acceptable, good"..at Euroncap they use percentages to evaluate the exact damages caused to each limb or head of each passenger..half of these cars got 5 stars out of 5 (Fiat 500, Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta) , the Chevrolet Spark got 4

SirensOfCincinnati Actually it has not enough crumble zone to resist an impact and it has a huuuge chance of getting roll over. Also, since most of the lift is done in 80% of cases by people who don't know what they are doing, it is quite common to have terrible results.

This test is still an extremely hard test to pass. The most important thing to remember is that the front end needs to be designed to absorb all that crash energy. Also, dummy movement needs to be well controlled. As you saw some of those dummies unfortunately don't make contact with all the air bags.

I would rather say that the body structure of the car should guide the barrier away from the vehicle, so that the car sort of sweeps past the barrier. This way, the structure of the vehicle has to endure significantly less stress and the occupants would not experience such a sudden deceleration.

How are these tests relevant? What are the chances that the impact will take place at under 60km/h? Why they don't make these tests tougher, go to 60mph/100km/h. I think manufacturers are getting lazy, use very slim steel/aluminium and try to pass certain scenarios, but in the real world conditions are never optimal or just like in these tests. You can be rear-ended by a maniac at 120km/h and considering these cars are only acceptable at a front impact at a low speed, I can't even imagine what they would look like after the rear-end impact. One big solid block of metal with...people inside. Really, they should stop thinking only at profits and make real progress on safety. Enforce safety systems like auto emergency brake, collision avoidance to be sold with every car, no matter what the price/category. Also, test more impact scenarios (front, side, rear, roof) at higher speeds to see the worst case scenario. Because real life is never like in a lab. Just my thoughts

Sure, if they used lightweight alloys it could but certainly adding a bit more to the diameter of the steels already in place on the vehicles couldn't cost more than $3000 per vehicle. Not to mention there are likely more efficient ways to reinforce the vehicle than the designs we are already using. Im merely spouting conjecture, of course, the companies will do absolutely none of this sadly. Profit over people reigns true no matter what industry you look at.

These test are not realistic at all; 1- In most cases the driver hits the brakes as reflex which causes the nose of the vehicle to dive, and it might cause significantly more damage to the car, and the passengers in the car. 2- Dummies are just lump masses. In a car crash human beings tense their muscles, unless the occupants in the car did not realize that they are going to get involved in a crash, like being rear ended. Again this may effect the injury being severe or less severe. 3- In many situations, as a reflex, the driver pushes himself/herself back using the steering wheel. this also make an injury more, or less severe.
