Yeah, exactly one of the reasons why there are some bad behaved small dogs. It's so refreshing to find videos about training small dogs, because methods used for bigger dogs won't always work the exact same way with small dogs.

Worked INSTANTLY with my 14-month-old Bichon Frise! I have had a very satisfying process of getting ok results on the walk with Beau in his puppy stages with just engagement and positive reinforcement. But it felt like maintaining that success required MY constant engagement with the dog or he would wander out of the pocket, which is not the end goal! I was kind of struggling to figure out how to get this “finished”. A total stroke of luck that I found JOEL’S advice when I think my dog was most ready for it. This literally fixed our walk FIRST time out, first day, and no going back. For the past weeks since that breakthrough, I have been continually amazed at his progress, and SO PROUD to walk my dog. Already accustomed to seeing me constantly working with my dog, it means a LOT that my neighbors have remarked on how well Beau walks and behave while we are out. This is the stuff right here. Thank you, Joel!!!

Your advice has TRANSFORMED my little female Jack Russell terrier mix- I rescued her when she was already 4 years old, never had an owner, and ran around a neighborhood in a makeshift dog pack. This little pup had ZERO socialization or training and I felt in over my head. She was fear-aggressive and had dominance issues from the jump and I mean it was everything - guarding food/toys/me, growling, biting humans AND dogs, etc) We made so much progress and eliminated the aggression but a few months ago I hit a wall and gave up on her ever meeting strange dogs or not being leash reactive- I even thought she would never be able to wait for her food /practice delayed gratification. After binging your videos and practicing alone a bunch, I worked with her for four days straight using your methods for feeding and loose leash walking. She has now met two large, male neighborhood dogs in the last two days and has a play date scheduled !!! I am over the moon and can’t thank you more, I’m sending my friends here. P.S. exclusive positive reinforcement would have never EVER worked on this willful stubborn little dog. This guys mixed method? It works. Dont baby your small dog :p they really do hate that it works 😂 but she’s been calmer and happier ALL AROUND despite some frustration at meal time

I've been doing your method with my small CKC for leaving the house it improved her behavior like 75%. I was reluctant to do corrections because of her size and a slight hip issue. However I started the turn direction method and even walking into from the left. Mygoidnessshe really started watching me. The last two weeks I've been very consistent about her not leaving me. Again great success. I am not rough. She's nowdoes NOTfly outtge door, nor does she pull on walks or go crazy over pedestrians etc. However so far she's still barking and lunging at other dogs. This is a big challenge. Trouble with small dogs and owners is they are little and cute. As such people let them get away with everything. "They are not your "fur baby" they are a dog. Not to be mistreated but al SS o not to rule the roost. Thank you!!! Also thank you for your comment about the gentle leader. She has a very small snout andit just doesn't really work well.

Same! With a rescue we adopted a month ago. Started to these little turnarounds at home and then gradually went to the garden, the street an a round at the block. He’s doing great with focussing on me but gets hyper focussed and aggressive at other dogs. Went from flat collar to harness and now trying the slip lead. It works with correcting him when he wants to lash out, but I’m worried it will be damaging as I’ve read some opinions about it. Will have an appointment with behaviour specialist soon

As with the other commenters, this has transformed my 5 yo schipperke. He has IMPA and a lot of his life was spent correcting his health issues and almost all of his socialization/reactivity issues are gone. He still has some weird standoffishness but he is 200% better. I tell everyone I run into with dogs about your channel. Thank you for the amazing training advice.

This is wonderful. I personally take private clients and teach leash pressure outside of my workplace. I also educate people and refer out of the positive only location. There are more effective methods to address the problem directly and give the honest feedback your dog always wanted. Positive and balanced can work hand in hand instead of being at war with each other. I’m on a mission to prove it. Thank you Joel! P.S. I worked with an Alaskan Malamute that you would’ve loved. Will keep my eye on you!

Thank you for using a small dog. I have a 7lb poodle mix. He is pretty good 95% of the time. He is excellent when we are at a park on leash or at off leash trails. We don’t go to dog parks (too many irresponsible owners). He even goes to dog friendly stores with me and just follows me, never pulls, and when I’m looking at something he either sits or lays by my feet. He loves all people. My issue is that around my neighbourhood he is leash reactive to a few dogs. I have used your method to make sure he is with me prior to me leaving the house and again with me in the driveway many times before leaving for our walk. This has helped somewhat but I am still having trouble with a couple dogs. Two have nipped him when he was a puppy (they were off leash in our neighbourhood --grrrr). He just seems to hate them and goes above threshold immediately. I’ve tried hiring trainers, using the treat method, moving away etc. But he seems to go 0-100 in secs. Do you have any advice for me? Btw, my pup is 3.5 yrs old and I just came across your videos recently. I love the matter of fact way and realistic way you approach training. I have told anyone who will listen to me to go check out your videos!! Thank you for what you do!🐶🥰

Three youtube channels have saved my newly adopted 2 year old untrained Aussie. Yours is one of them. I was seriously thinking about giving her back to the rescue center cause she bit my old dog twice. She was crazy aggressive when seeing other dogs, bicycles, motorcycles, some vehicles, or even joggers. Now she becomes a little bit more calm ignoring most of the highway traffic. She even ignores stupid noisy Harley Davidson when she plays her favorite catching game with me. She shows much less pulling on the leash even when I don't use a prong collar. She is still aggressive constantly looking at my neighbor's house cause they have a constantly barking dog. But today when she was starting to bark when hearing the neighbor dog barking like crazy, she stopped when I issued the "shut up" command. She started to respond to the shut up command about 2 weeks ago, except when she saw people or dogs being active or barking in the neighbor's house. If my crazy hypersensitive, hyperactive, totally untrained (not even potty trained cause she was living in the backyard in his previous owner's house), fear aggressive, ... can be trained, so can anyone's dog. There is hope.
@ruthlanni898
@ruthlanni898 Жыл бұрын
Please explain the "shut up" method. My dog was untrained and never walked for 6 yrs of her life.Thanks to theses methods she's 100% calmer and better behaved. EXCEPT with other dogs on leash. I can follow them or walk on the other side of sidewalk and sometimes I do that deliberately. But passing on the side walk is just nuts.

I love your techniques and find them so simple but effective. We still have problems with excessive barking when our dog's in the yard. She reacts to every dog or noisy vehicle that goes by with an out of control barking fit. We find the barking really bothersome and haven't found a way to control it, especially because we can't be out there with her all the time. I would love any tips or ideas. By the way, since I've been using your techniques on walks, she barely reacts at all to those things; it's only when she's in the yard.

You answered my question! Thanks so much, I tried it with my morkie (8 month old) today and it's getting better. The logic behind it makes sense. He does stop when I stop, but I wouldn't say that he's fully attentive to me. What I'm recently challenged by and confused about is this: when I take him into a large grassy field or if we walk down a large busy street with zooming cars, he starts to jump, lunge, pull frantically, seemingly out of nowhere. In the case of grass, he starts munching on some grass and when I try to calm him down, he tries to run away. When I try to calm him, I have to lower my body to his level, and he starts growling, baring some teeth and nipping, lunging at my hand. I end up having to pick him up and take him off the grass or leave the busy street. I'm wondering if it's overstimulation and coupled with my unintentional tightening of leash when he lunges all around. Sorry if the description isn't that clear, but any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I’m having major problems with my chihuahua, he is super reactive to other dogs when walking, pulls and doesn’t pay attention to me at all. The barking at other dogs is so embarrassing, I heard it’s bad to use collars on chihuahuas but I think him being on a harness is encouraging him to pull. Is trying this method with a collar instead of his harness safe for chihuahuas ?

I've been watching these videos on loose leash walking for a few weeks now. I just came across this one. Thanks for including a small dog walk. Unfortunately, I have been trying what I saw you do with the bigger dogs and I definitely screwed up. I just got back from the vet after noticing that my dog has been having a step issue on his right front leg. He would step and whimper and draw his leg to his body. Vet diagnosed a nerve problem. He had to have two injections and is on meds for a few weeks to see if it will heal. I obviously pulled too hard. I feel awful. My dog is a chihuahua mix. While I think your method does work, I believe that owners need to be aware of how much force to use when training a small dog.

Can you do this with a small dog that non stop pulls? I yank my dog constantly and it doesn’t work
@trumplostlol3007
@trumplostlol3007 3 жыл бұрын
It will eventually work. When I first adopted my crazy 2 year old untrained Aussie girl. She didn't just pull hard. She will totally ignore my presence and went wherever she wanted to go. If I pull her back, she would just walk the other direction, like a crazy maniac with no purpose except to rebel for the sake of rebelling. I believe rebelling is a form of dominance. She wanted to be in the dominant position even though I was the one providing her with food and shelter. Of course she also has serious fear aggression cause she is easily intimidated by strange objects in my house, such as the ceiling fan. She shows serious aggression towards fast moving objects. She doesn't just bark but will chase after the moving objects. Yanking your dog may not teach your dog why you yank. Yank your dog and move back to the very initial position. Repeat this until your dog submit and look at you. When I first adopted my Aussie, she followed me everywhere including the kitchen. I gave her the "off" command to send her away from the kitchen repeatedly many many many times until she stopped entering the kitchen. If she didn't back off, I would walk toward her until her body was totally outside of the kitchen area. Now, she knows she should never step into the kitchen whenever I am inside regardless of what I am doing inside, say making a coffee for myself. Some dogs are very stubborn and some dogs are just dumb. LOL But eventually, they will get it.
@1234lowkey
@1234lowkey 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve been dealing with this issue with a very small dog I’ve been walking. Stubborn and the corrections were making minimal impact. Body blocks and cutting off their path is helpful as well as turning and walking into them. The thing that helped this little guy I’m working with the most was just stopping. Correction at the end of the leash and calling him back to me. He would only want to partially come back so I made him come right to my side every time. We don’t walk unless he’s beside me. I will also turn around and start walking in the opposite direction. The lack of response to the corrections alone was nothing I’ve seen before but combining those things above and after a couple weeks he’s heeling like a boss! Just remember it’s never a one size fits all and keep working at it, you will see progress but it takes time.

So does this work with a harness because I don't really like putting on a collar on my 1.5 kg Chihuahua. And she doesn't pull or something and she can walk without a leash except for when another dog walks by because then she runs up to them and just starts barking. She doesn't bite she just barks and when she does that I can't get her focus back.

Can you help me i have a (we think) Jack Russel X Bichon Frisé but he is very long on tall for those two breeds so i suspect there are other breeds in him anyway i genuinely think he's just a not very clever dog but i don't know he might just be stubborn (he's definitely got jack Russell in him) but i have been doing you lead walking technique for over a year! Every single walk for a year. He doesn't go the bed the sofa etc and i don't let him rush out the door but have to correct hime every time! he has a 1 hour walk daily (he's ten) and doesn't pull horrendously but isn't the best lead walker! and i can be constantly corrected and he will still be pulling or in front by the end of the walk! when he was a puppy he used a Halti and HATED it he wouldn't put his nose in for ANYTHING and will run when he sees it and as he doesn't pull badly enough we don't use it anymore. but my main problem is that he just can't seem to learn how to lead walk properly as i said even after a year! can you suggest anything else? On the rare occasion i have a NICE heal i can't get his eye contact even when i correct him and i don't know why, he'll be in a heal and know exactly if i stop without ever looking at me!

Nice content, new sub. Btw do you have a video or how to deal with a fearful dog on walks? I have a Rottweiler of almost 11 months and when she was 8, she was attack by 2 street dogs that came out of a parking lot. Now whenever we are on walks and a there is a dog in a house for example and it stars to bark, she tries to run away pulling so hard and my fear is that she sometimes run towards the driveway and into the cars, we where practicing to much off leash walking but after that attack happens everything went backwards, also I star to notice that when she hear some noises she gets a little scared. I would appreciate any help or a recommendation, and I hope my English didn't suck hahahaha. Btw when she see a dog on the street, she doesn't react with fear or anything it's only when they are in houses or behind a fences.
