Steve's Cockney accent here is a riot! Song Of A Baker is a great one from this same LP.

I absolutely love The Small Faces. Steve Marriott is in my humble (pie) opinion the greatest male vocalist the UK has produced. This album is probably my favourite album of all time. Check out the track Afterglow....

It wasn't only a band, it was a culture . Here in Britain they were Mods , smartly dressed ,as opposed to the scruffy Rockers. I could right a book about those days. I'm 76 now, I better hurry 😂😂😂

You are correct Biz that they were VERY British. In an interview, Steve said he felt one of the resons Americans didn't appreciate them was because they were too British and they were more interested in bands like "Gary Pucket and the Union Gap !!" Anyone remember them?? Some music critics have also said that perhaps they were too British, whatever that means. I think the Kinks had the same problem as they often wrote in very Brtish terms (ie:Waterloo Sunset, so beautiful but not a huge hit over here). The SF's were not only British, they were working class East London Cockney, who have their own special accents and slang (which this song is full of). Steve learned to drop his accent while a student at theatrical school. However, when he went to visit one of his east end friends, her mother called him "Little Lord Fauntleroy" because he spoke so "posh", which embarassed Steve, so he went back to speaking with his natural accent.Also, he said he quit his acting career because it was boring and he didnt really act as he was typecast as the little smart assed cockney kid, which was really me playing myself!

The Kinks were also banned from the USA for four years, after problems on their first tour.

OK you have no idea what a trip you are about to go down if you play side two starting with Happiness Stan - it is an incredible musical fairy tale with incredible music but with some UK dude telling the story of Stan flying to the moon on a fly or something like that only in a language that he made up. Think piglatin on steroids, you can understand what he is saying but you have to listen hard. It is brilliant and a masterpiece that everyone should hear at least once.

Couldn't agree more. Side 2 is a must. That "UK dude" is Stanley Unwin. He has a Wikipedia page and had a single released in 1962 kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3uQiWuQjNNrhpY , three years before the Small Faces first record 😃
@cindyfalstrom72319 ай бұрын
@@sharonsnail2954 Totaly agree, Stanley Unwin narrating this tale was a genius move. However, I own this album and must admit that after hearing it about a hundred times, Stanley grows tiresome after about a dozen times.. the music NEVER grows old though ✌

Steve Marriot went on to form Humble Pie with peter Frampton, the man had a phenomenal voice, unfortunately, he burned his own house down, and died.

This song shows the "chirpy chappie" side of the Small Faces. They loved to have fun and write happy, creative songs. This song was the result of Steve driving his neighbors crazy with his partying and also an argument with some one in the Hollies who claimed that Steve never sang in his natural "Cockney" voice. This was intended to be a joke song cut on side one of their new album. The designated "single" agreed upon was the beautiful power pop love song "Afterglow". However, when their manager, Andrew Loog Oldham, a genius at marketing heard this he smelled a Hit and released it as the single instead of the agreed upon song without telling the band. Andrew was right as the single flew to the top of the single charts and stayed there. The band, however , were horrified and very angry as they were desperately trying to shed the teeny bopper tag and be taken seriously. Mac said that Steve was embarassed by the song and Kenney has written it was one of the final nails in the coffin that caused Steve to quit the band. The band grew to hate the song, and a few months later, Steve quit. Too bad, Andrew was right - it is a great classic British pop song and is one of their most popular.

I really like this album. It's in the top ten on the list of most underrated concept albums of all time. For a long time only versions of this were terrible reissues. Eventually they got bought by a good label that remastered them, and what a great job. The sound quality is so much better.

It is not so much 'British' as London. The lyrics at the time would baffle many people from outside the metropolis. The Small Faces were the definitive London group.
@cindyfalstrom72319 ай бұрын
Not just London from what I understand, but East End London, which has a unique subculture than the "posher" areas. I once sat with the lyrics of this song and looked up the cockney words/phrases in a "British slang" dictionary - that was fun - for example "doing me crust in" means giving him a headache!
