And it took 2 guys to replace Steve, and still they were never as good. In fact on many SF songs he's also on the keys. It shows what a void he left when they had to get at least two other guys (or even 3) to replace him and still come up short. The faces had a couple of good tracks, like stay with me, but they were never close to the motherband. Steve and Ronnie wrote some amazing stuff and for me the question is who was the number 2 60s band, the stones or the beatles.
@Darrenski
@Darrenski Жыл бұрын
@marymargaretmoore9034 what I'd give to have been there. In the 60s my dad was the dj at the top rank, the big club in my home city of preston in England and he saw the beatles play the preston public hall in 62 (i think it was 62) just before all the media hype made them the big thing and he always told me live they were nothing special at all and he didn't hear or see anything amazing about them. But he said the SF were electric, the best he ever saw live. He was a bit of a purist though and only played motown, rare US imports and what we now call mod music but at that time was just blues/soul/RnB/rock. It took me a long time to accept that my old man, God rest him, was right. In fact I was 50 before it fully hit me.

THANK YOU for featuring my favorite '60's band (behind Beatles). in 1965, 3 Mod teenagers (Steve Marriott 17, Ronnie Lane 18, Kenney Jones 16) from the East end of London,( along w/IanMcLagan, 19, on keys), formed a hot little R&B band. In Mod terminology a "Face" was a very important Mod, as in very cool! Since the tallest guy in the band was only 5'5, they called themselves the SMALL FACES". They exploded on the scene and were extremely popular creating hit after hit and tearing up Europe playing live. To quote Rolling Stone (from Steve's obituary): "The Small Faces created a brilliant mix of frenetic soul, wry cockney charm and acid pop playfulness, topped by Marriott's electrifying vocal style". After three years, Steve got sick and tired of being labeled a "teen Idol" and wanted to harden up their sound by adding another hot guitarist he had befriended, by the name of PETER FRAMPTON. The other three said NO!, so on New Years eve 68/69 during yet another concert where they couldn't even hear themselves for all the girls screaming, Steve got fed up, threw his guitar down and walked off stage, quitting the band. He and Peter formed a band they called HUMBLE PIE. The remaining 3 SMALL FACES added Rod Wood and ROD STEWART from the Jeff Beck Group and changed their name to FACES. Small Faces played a variety of styles Pop, R&B, soul, rock, psychedelia, whimsy and music hall - all great. Any of the songs listed in the comments are good, but I think their best songs were their very creative album cuts. I would recommend you start with their early works and move forward through their changing styles. You MUST start with "You Need Lovin" - it will blow your mind if you love Zeppelin as Robert Plant idolized Marriott and copied his vocal style early on. "All or Nothing", "Whatcha Gonna Do About It" (Jimi Hendrix said this guitar solo was one of his favorites) are early R&B favorites. Too many more to list here now.... PLEASE play more. Sadly, they never came over to the US with the other British Invasion bands, so alot of people in the US have never heard of them.

They were called small faces because they were all 5 foot five and shorter Later on Rod Stewart joined the band (Marriott left form, humble pie) The other members in the band stuck around… Rod Stewart is 5 foot 10 he brought along with him Ron Wood (who would later join the Rolling Stones) The new band was now called “faces “ You did a great review !!!! The recording *is* the studio recording. This performance was *mimed* to it, as was the case for most UK TV performances of the era. Singing way off mic without any change in the sound is a dead giveaway, as well as the extra voices, and (mostly slight) drumming inconsistencies with the music. The TV shows used to do that to make sure the running times were tight. Sometimes the vocals would be live. Everyone knew, and many performers *hated* it. Keith Moon, the drummer for The Who, used to take the piss by purposely screwing around. *Bad-ass* song and performance, just the same. As for the recording quality, it was probably recorded on 4 track equipment, which is why things were panned the way they were. They did that a lot in the 60s, not having much to work with to be creative with positioning in the mix. In this case, they probably pre-mixed the instruments and bounced them to one track, then recorded the vocals and overdubs (such as the offbeat cymbal shots, perhaps? on other tracks, which may be why the instruments sound more raw, being 2nd generation recordings. It probably sounds better in mono, as it was most likely intended. Less care was taken with stereo mixes until the very end of the 60s, when stereo records that were also playable in mono were developed, because most people in England didn't *have* stereo equipment. The stereo positioning of Beatles' Rubber Soul album stereo mix was even more extreme, all panned hard right or hard left, with a hole in the middle, though the instruments and voices sounded marvelous. But I still like the stereo version of Rubber Soul better than the mono mix, because I prefer the content of the mixes, which was slightly different. The first Beatles album was recorded on 2-tracks, one for the backing and another for the vocals; and that is how the stereo album was released, with the vocals on one side, instruments on the other, except for overdubs that were recorded during mixing, which were common during the early days of tape recording. A lot of 60s "stereo" pop records were also in fake reprocessed stereo, as the record companies were often too cheap to do proper stereo mixes. In fact, the Kinks' first hit, You Really Got Me, was recorded on one track, so *all* "stereo" mixes are reprocessed. The producers did strange things to create mock stereo, such as some very early US "stereo" Kinks albums I have (such as The Kink Kontroversy), in which the dry signal is on one side and a massive wash of echo on the other. I kid you not, many of these fake stereo mixes are way more bizarre to listen to than this one.

The Faces evolved from the Small Faces. The original Small Faces, led by Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane, were named so because neither they nor anyone else in the band was especially tall. Eventually Steve left to form Humble Pie with Peter Frampton. Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood (from the Stones) joined the Small Faces as replacements. The problem was that Rod and Ronnie were slightly taller dudes, so they dropped the word "Small" and were known from then on as simply "The Faces". So many of these great Small Faces tunes had really sloppy production. "Sha La-La-La- Lee", "Afterglow", "Itchycoo Park", "All or Nothing", "My Mind's Eye", "Whatch Gonna Do About it". Great band.

The Small Faces name was registered to the notorious Don Arden. The only way they could make money was to split up, and they weren't allowed to reform under another name in the terms of their contract, so they had to split. Stevie Marriott was such a bright talent.

@@LynneConnolly Thanks for the info, Lynne. So the actual reason the band dropped the "Small" from their name was due to a contractual situation and not the often-told tale of Rod and Woody being tall?
@LynneConnolly
@LynneConnolly Жыл бұрын
@@KennyY-bh3zl So I understand. Although it might have been a consideration! But the Small Faces didn't make a dime on their work, because of their lowlife boss, who threatened Jimmy Page when he tried to recruit Steve Marriott for the New Yardbirds, who became Led Zeppelin. The boss was Don Arden, father of Sharon Osborne. He was pretty much a gangster, who demanded awful contracts from new, young talent, and tied them up for years. Peter Grant, who managed Led Zeppelin was pretty gangster-ish, but he worked for the band, and made them all a lot of money. Grant used to be a wrestling entrepreneur. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Arden

What a brilliant band The Small Faces were here in the UK back in the '60's. If you want to get a real idea of what Stevie's voice was really like, then PLEASE listen & react to Humble Pie's live performance of 'Black Coffee' with Stevie Marriott on vocals🙋‍♂ When Stevie quit the band, he helped form Humble Pie with Pete Frampton. Stevie tragically died in a house fire back in the late '80's I believe and he's still so sorely missed. 💔 The lady joining The Small Faces here was P.P Arnold, who had originally been a member of Ike & Tina Turner's backing vocalists. Steve Marriott was a 21 year old, skinny British white guy who wrote this song, one of the greatest rock songs ever, for his wife. The Small Faces were led by Marriott as main singer/songwriter/guitarist and Steve had one of the most powerful, soulful voices ever, as well as an incredible passion and stage presence! Love the Small Faces for coming up with this great tune, but as a Canadian I have to mention the (in my biased opinion) better version by our own Streetheart. This was blasted/imprinted into my brain as a young teenager in the early 80's, playing at full volume at the various rides at our annual summer exposition. The intro with the sparse piano chords, and steadily building guitar parts make this still one of the most dynamic tunes out there.

I'm really curious now, there's a Canadian band called "Streetheart" that covered this song and it was a hit in Canada. It's very similar but maybe a little more rockin' and modern. I wonder what you'd think if you compared them. Cheers.

As a SF's fan, I was curious. Never heard of Streetheart. No one beats Marriott, IMO, but their cover is excellent. Thanks, like to discover new (old) bands.

Streetheart are from the prairies of Canada. They had a few good hits and did a great job doing the cover of Tin Soldier but nobody else has the voice, soul and stage presence of Steve Marriot. 💖

@@EntropyAmplifier No one said Streetheart was better, just different. But they are probably better in some others opinions.

Streetheart did a version of the Rolling Stones song " Under my Thumb" even Mick Jagger said Streetheart did it better.

The video uses the studio music over the live performance. The original version of the video is around, but it really doesn’t sound good.

You are right, this was originally recorded live on French TV, but the sound was so terrible that this video was later dubbed. Funny thing is, I was going to link the original video here in case anyone wanted to hear it, but when I searched, YT said it is no longer available. Bummer, as the video also had PP singing her hit "If You Think You're Groovy" w/Small Faces backing her, and a rare live version of "Itchicoo Park". Very disappointing.

MaryEllen, I know you mean this as a high compliment, but are you aware that Steve died horribly in an accidental house fire? It's slightly creepy to see people (there are lots) putting these flames behind his name. It's meant as a compliment, but in this case, perhaps a bit inappropriate. Peace ✌

It's a shame you can't hear P P Arnolds vocals in the mix and yes Humble Pie is correct .

Biz, you may also enjoy a song by Marmalade called _I See the Rain_ . Supposedly Hendrix thought it was the best song of 1967. They also had a hit called _Reflections of My Life_ in the late sixties. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5XOimpsqMikrM0

One of the greatest bands ever,sadly like many great bands at the time they tend to be overshadowed by the amount of hype surrounding a certain,IMO,overrated band who I won't name!
