I had a ‘62 Caddy 2 door coupe(metallic light blue, no A/C) with 67,000 miles on it, which I bought from an elderly lady in 1970 for $300. I spent $75 at the corner gas station to get a lifter replaced. I drove it for about 30,000 miles, then traded it to my dad, who put another 100,000 on it. A wonderful car and lots of great miles for an investment of only $375! They sure don’t make ‘em like that any more😢

it was summer of 1965 and my dad's friend, Harry, showed up at our house with a top down '63 caddy convertible, red on red leather, he was considering buying. He asked my dad to go on a test ride with him (we had a '60 sedan de ville). Dad said OK, and told me to jump into the back seat. We got on the highway and Harry decided to find the top end. I was a skinny 14-year-old kid and had to grab onto anything i could to stay in the car with the wind buffetting around at over 100mph and no seatbelt. scary but cool.

Here I am, a Swedish Citroën enthusiast (I like old Cadillacs too), watching this nice Coupé De Ville and really like watching the DS in the background. And then....What in the name of....You have an XM in the shop??? Wow. I mean the DS was sold in the US but someone imported an XM there!? When do we get to see a video on that? Do you need any help or something? I have worked a lot on XM´s and I have some good workshop manuals for it in PDF format if you need.

I installed a few of those old York compressors, and worked on the air on a few older cars with them. They shook, even when brand new out of a box, they did make the car shake at idle. Tossing the compressor was a great idea, while you are at it look for a slim under the dash unit, a company named ARA made some great looking units that hugged the bottom of the dash, not sure if anything could be found by them today. The rear radio speakers had clip on covers over them, there was a spring clip that fit over the magnet holding it up close to the underside of the package tray. The boxes were made of pressed paper like an old glove box they were lined with a sound deader I saw them on cars as late as 1968. I bought tons of AM radio cars when I was a teen, I used to buy JC Penny FM converters, just so I could listen to music without static and did not fade out when you encountered an underpass. Good Luck Wizard, you have a nice old Cadillac there, you were the right man to get this car, you will show it the love it deserves.

Hi, i am from Germany so my English isn´t perfect.I got the same,1963 CDV but equiped with AC from Factory. The Compressor worked, but the old Fluid is forbidden in Germany,so i put the AC out. I rebuild the Carburator,Electric Fuel Pump, an it runs very smooth. Starting with hot Engine, zero Problem. Fuel Consumption is about 18 Liters/100KM....absolutly fine! Original Ignition and no Problems with it. For the Sound(AM Radio is working, Antenna too and even the Clock) i put a Bluetooth Speaker in the Armrest Rest(Teufel Boomster in White Colour).When the Weather is fine, i use this Car as a Daily Driver and it works great for me. I need one Year for the Restauration and now it is not perfect,but the best i have seen on Meetings i was. Enjoy your Car. Greetings from Germany

Dave- im thrilled you're keeping the powertrain. 1963 was the last of the four speed dual-coupling hydramatic. She'll go about 3 feet in first gear before an imperceptible shift to second, than accelerate smoothly for quite a while before a very noticeable shift to third accompanied by a large drop in revs and that will be followed quickly by an imperceptible shift to fourth. All of the above is under gentle acceleration.

As to black being a rare color, I would think there were a lot of black Caddies running around, such as in the song "I'm a friendly stranger in a black sedan....". Hmmmmm. Wizard, I used to have a Pontiac GTO 1966. There was an area that hit with a rock and damaged it. My father who was a mechanic by trade told me that GM cars were painted with lacquer and not enamel. I filled the hole and painted it and buffed it and it turned out great. I really enjoy the postings that you and your wife have done. Keep up the good work. Al Roman

My source of information lists Ebony Black, paint code 10 like Car Wizard said, as a standard paint color. There are twenty-one paint choices for 1963, five of them Eldorado only. No FM radio until 1964, AM radio with rear speaker was a $165 option. Great car Wizard, I'd keep it forever if it was mine.

My dad got a 1963 Cadillac convertible in beige, with red leather upholstery in '64, and I got chauffeured around it while I was in 6th to 10th grades. i have many fond memories riding in it, but he sold it before I got my license in '69. I'd love to get a rid in another before I check out. I remember it had a 390 engine with a 4 speed tranny, something unusual for the time. The car managed all of 11 mpg in town, but managed 17mpg on highway trips, not bad for a land yacht

Hey Wizard, I dont comment on YT videos but a/c is what I do for a living. Sanden "style" compressors are not very good but will work for awhile. I would rotate it to the passenger side on the universal mount so your hoses clear the hood and look clean. Upgrade to a 5 blade a/c car fan or clutch set up for better airflow over the condenser and rad (Cold Case radiators are great). At this time since you are making new hoses, consider a universal parallel flow condenser for better cooling and lower pressures. Great car and videos and awesome shop!

Dave, good choice on just painting the hood. Beautiful car. I would leave the stock carb. Maybe run a return line off a fuel filter like Uncle Tony’s garage does to get rid of vapor lock? Are you going to take that up in the mountains? It can get easy to throw a lot of money at that project then not get a good return on that when you sell. Plus, I love the simplicity of carbs.

Also, if you go with the fuel injection, please tell us about fuel economy. I have a 72 Buick Electra with a 455 and original carburetor. If I’m careful I can squeak out 15mpg on a highway cruise. The fuel pump requires lifting the right side of the engine quite high, the 4 speed transmission and 390 cid engine are a one year only combo, get rid of that carburetor and the rear differential is suspended by a huge ball joint that is not obtainable but is serviceable if it starts clunking and it will. The AC fans can get out of balance as the weights fall off, turn signal should still be available. My best friend since 1970 has owned every model of 1963 Cadillac and he still owns a '63 Limousine. I hope you don't need an oil pump as it's in the timing chain housing and unobtainable but a new gear kit may still be available. These are great fun to drive but a real challenge to fix. Service that transmission right away.

Cool! I have a black 67 Cadillac with whitewalls! My Dad and me rebuilt the 429. Adapted a TH-200-4R auto then years later a T5 manual swap!

Very expensive on gas. I used to get 9-10 mpg out of my 1966. Long journeys? It's cheaper to fly.

Hi from Brazil, Wizard. Here in Brazil we've been adapting small Bluetooth receivers inside vintage radios, they are pretty small, keeping all amplification circuit intact. You can use a small hidden switch to toggle between AM tuner and BT, in case you want to keep AM functional.

Some AC guys will tell you you cannot do it. But you can clock the back plate of that sanden in 90° , so that the hose is point to the side rather than up and down.

I would avoid the fuel injection mr wizard. When it comes to those fuel injection units they're often more prone to failure than a carburetor setup. You have a good setup with that afb style. I would personally go to a more modern avs2 style edelbrock if you want to upgrade. People can argue with me and tell me they're set up works great and thats good for them. Ive seen many issues with them. For way less you could get a good new carb and not even notice a difference in performance

1964 had an enlarged version (429 ci) of the revised for 1963 390. 472 didn’t come out until 1968. Could have been retrofitted, but was a major undertaking given it was an entirely new engine.

It is interesting that your '63 Caddy did not have factory air. That York compressor and the interior evaporator/fan module are aftermarket, add-on A/C. Factory air used the Harrison axial/swash plate compressor. My dad had a '63 Olds with factory air and that was the system it used. Very smooth. I had an early 70s Mustang with factory air. It used the York style compressor made by Tecumseh. The pulley on it was actually a heavy flywheel. That was pretty effective in mitigating the vibration.

Love the Caddy! Wizard, if you do replace the carb please make sure that the throttle valve rod that goes to the trans is installed and adjusted/operates correctly. If not, it will not shift properly and the trans may burn up. That is a 315 Hydramatic and rebuilding one isn't cheap.

I just thought I'd share some of my experiences with similar issues. First, over the years doing R12 to 134a conversions, I always noticed that it would work and get cool, but not as cold as it should. Eventually I learned that the main difference between the two refrigerants was in the efficiency of the condenser. In most cases, if you were to compare the R12 and 134a designed condensers side by side, the 134a condenser would make the old R12 condenser look like a little transmission fluid cooler by comparison. If you use a new condenser designed for 134a, the system will deliver much colder air... Second, the old running hot, getting vapor lock issues, and boiling gas in the carburetor problems I recently figured out can be all fixed by simply making sure the vacuum advance on the distributor is working properly. I recently figured this out after replacing everything in the cooling system first and still getting too hot and leaving me stranded with vapor lock preventing fuel from getting to the carburetor. Then, I even tried all the tricks to keep the fuel system cooler, but it still got too hot, and vapor locked... Before I fixed the vacuum advance, the temperature gauge would get up to about 215 degrees, then stall out with vapor lock, even going down the highway at speed with lots of air naturally going through the radiator. Now since I fixed the vacuum advance, the temperature gauge stays around 170-180 degrees, even while stuck crawling in traffic, and my vapor lock issues are gone. My gas mileage got much better as well... I didn't even have to adjust the distributor/mechanical timing as it was already set where it needed to be, the only changes I made were I switched it to a manifold vacuum source, and adjusted the little adjustment screw on the vacuum diaphragm to maximize the advance... If you think about it, late ignition timing causes combustion to happen too late in the cycle when the piston is down at bottom of cylinder, which heats up the entire length of the cylinder walls top to bottom, which overpowers the cooling system, and it is still burning on its way out through the exhaust manifolds, adding extra heat under the hood as well. Correct early timing keeps the combustion happening up in the chamber/top of cylinder where less heat is transferred into the cooling system... Anyway, nice Cadillac!!!

Upgrade the headlight circuit to run through a relay mounted up by the lights rather than all that voltage going through the switch itself. It’s a cheap and easy to install kit you can buy for antique cars. Easy upgrade.

That is the car for you!!! It is so metal - literally. I like your choices on upgrades - a Holley Sniper will prevent most of that raw gas smell. Great find! I had a ‘67 Coupe DeVille that I drove daily for 10 years until I had to give it away during a cross country move. These cars drive so well - and handle decently for their 5000lb curb weight. I hope you keep this one - if not, sell it to me.

Ive got a 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII as my daily driver that i absolutely love in part because it doesnt have a computer module for everything. The engine and transmission (basically just a cobra) are pretty easy to get parts for but interior pieces or something like the neon tail light(its an lsc so its color matched to the car) can be difficult to find and even moreso because its not the common beige interior. I actually went to buy an air filter the other day at Walmart but their part book only goes back to 1999 🙃

Riding in style!!! I remember those days! I as 6-7 yrs. old and the guy we bought our house from in Homestead Florida (back then a small farming community winter tomato capital of the U. S.!) he lived in Colorado would come down and stay with us for the winter. Every year he would come and go shopping for a used Cadillac he would buy it and fix up any small problems. He would take me into town and get ice cream cones! We would be floating along with power windows! He would mail me Black Cat firecrackers from Colorado every year labeled as magazines!!! The neatest thing I saw one day was a big Coup deVille pulling a trailer made out of another Cadillac! They had cut the frame, so you only had the trunk portion, but it had the big fins!

If you know someone with a 3D printer and they can also use CAD software, you could get the blinker switch (and other such items) reproduced in a high temp engineered plastic. (Not PLA because locked car cabin heat exceeds its droop temp). 100% on the Holley Injection - great idea. I think the wide white wall tyres look great also. Not so sure you need 150 amp alternator swap as 45A - 70A was pretty normal in the day and coped with battery charging and headlights etc. But its a very easy job to do, so why not. Lovely car.

A RetroSound radio is always an option. It will give you AM/FM, bluetooth, and aux input without cutting any holes in the dash. They also sell stereo speakers that fit in the existing holes.

On the 1970 Olds 98 that my family had when I was a kid, it was an AM/FM stereo radio, and the way they did stereo was with one channel on the (single) front speaker, and the other channel on the (single) rear speaker.

In this day and age, just roll with a nice bluetooth speaker sitting on the seat. You can charge it via the cigar lighter in the dash as well.

Yes, definitely change out the Carter carb. The EFI system will make the engine much smoother and improve the gas mileage. These cars were famous for getting 8 mpg if you drove carefully. The people complaining about painting the car are the restore original people. If the paint isn’t perfect it will bug you forever. Get the new radios that look original but give you Bluetooth and Sirius/XM too with much better reception..

That is aftermarket AC!! Added by the local Firestone! I had that compressor on my first car, an AMC Pacer. And it was a vibration factory. Do the EFI upgrade!!! I would consider a 4L60E upgrade... OD and a locking torque converter... epic MPG improvement. Love the car!!! Super gorgeous!!!

Here in the UK I have a 1954 Morris Minor. It's a split screen model and needs 2 chrome inserts for the mounting rubbers and a centre strip. Mine was missing the chrome inserts - just had sticky gunk in the slot. New rubbers $20 equivalent. Two pieces of chrome which no one makes now - $500!!! OUCH. That was more than rebuilding the engine!

@@JustinPaul1st It is black, though that is not the most common colour now. Red interior and in factory delivered condition. Just not the original registration as a previous owner kept that for their current car (registrations are not like number plates in other countries) :( Very happy for it to have it's 70th birthday in my hands. I also have a Daimler V8 saloon that just turned 60 this year and is still running on it's factory/delivery plates!

My uncle gave my son his 1963 Nova convertible when he returned from Iraq after two tours years ago. I stored it at my house for a couple of years and did some work to it like new fuel tank, alternator instead of generator etc. The radio worked but speaker was blown and I wanted to be able to listen to stereo FM without removing the AM radio. I found an inexpensive AM/FM with bluetooth and usb port and it was so small and light I used magnets to mount it to the bottom of the metal dash and used some good sounding external speakers from an old TV that are zipped tied in. No holes cut or drilled and can be removed instantly. I even made up a thumb drive with tunes from the '60's. Great fun for an old man!

If you want to add stereo, front speaker one channel, rear the other - works well with out other speakers.

For a classic you can actually drive (as opposed to a show car), go with the fuel injection. Also electronic ignition to replace points and condenser (if not already converted). The really expensive resto-mod that might be worth it is a brake upgrade. My 1965 Dodge did not have a split diagonal braking system. Just one reservoir feeding all four corners. Now, Cadillac being high-end, it might already have a split brake in 1963. Discs on the front would also be useful in wet conditions. I would have to ride the brakes a bit in my '65 to dry the brakes after going through a puddle or else the car would pull madly to the drier side. Of course, we drove them as-is back in the day, and you can adjust your driving to them. But any guest driver should be instructed to not trust the brakes after hitting a puddle.

Disc brake swap may be easy; apparently all big RWD Caddys from around 1963 to 72(?) used the same upper and lower balljoints so 1969-70 spindles should be a bolt on swap, discs became standard in 1969, optional in 1968 and rotors apparently interchange with a plethora of 5 x 5" bolt pattern GM cars/trucks from around 1971 to 1991. Same with calipers, all were single piston and D52 front pads.

How did people get by with a carb and point ignition? Keep it original.

@vw5056 emissions regs demanded more consistent ignitions to cut down on misfires which could melt down the catalysts. Later on FI; once it started becoming reliable, also helped cold start driveability as well as much tighter A/F ratios.

And being from New Jersey, they drove you out to the swamps (which are now Giant Stadium) to "deposit" their rivals. Whenever we went to Giant Stadium we always had a moment of silence for Jimmy and who ever else might be under the goal post.....and yes the NY Giants play in NJ!

If you had a popular car, like a tri five Chevy, mid '60s Mustang, first gen Camaro, parts would be readily available and cheap. That is a very unusual car. If I had that car, I would do a lot of improvising. I used to have a 1972 VW Bug. The turn signal switch failed. That was 20 years ago. A new replacement switch was around $120. I made a bracket and attached it under the dash. I used a simple three way center off toggle switch for a turn signal switch. I drove it for several years like that. Cost almost nothing. One of the cool things about old cars is how simple they are, and just how easy it is to rig things. Those old Tecumseh compressors are tough. You can get liquid refrigerant in them, and instead of breaking the compressor, the compressor will lock up and break the belt. Here in Phoenix, AZ, we don't need heat. NO EFI!!!! EFI IS GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Probably the best thing about an old car is that they are carbureted. You're worried about speakers, but you are going to put a computer in it????? What's next?? 26" GHETTO REHUUMS?? Steering, brakes, and suspension is where you are really going to run into problems. Parts are available. They are not cheap. But they are JUNK. All aftermarket steering, brake, and suspension parts for cars like that are made in COMMUNIST China.

Carburators suck big time. never ever had a problem with fuel injection, on any of my cars ever. But carbs geez they really suck.. They just do. My 79 benzy works great.. so do the other 3..

@@peter-pg5yc I suppose you want a self driving EV too?? It's just a couple more steps in the wrong direction. A car is supposed to be a MACHINE. 100% mechanical with a rudimentary 12V electrical system that you can work on with nothing but hand tools and a basic multimeter. Once you computerize it, you change it from a machine into an appliance. The whole reason for buying/owning a classic car, besides how great they look, is to get away from all that computerized trash. I have owned over 20 carbureted cars, several with points ignition, and never had any problems. I have driven them from sea level to over 13,000 feet (Engineer Pass in Colorado) with no issues. Both carbureted cars and motorcycles. Yes they are going to be a bit richer at high altitude, but not enough to make any noticeable difference.

If you put a three way switch under the dashboard for the turn signal in a car like that you probably end up in the trunk

I really like car projects done like this. Sensible, respectful, professionally and logically done. "It's only original once". Tires? If the Mona Lisa (painting) had tires, a sensible art curator would replace them as needed. Good on the Wizard for his choices on the wide-wall whitewalls. If some future owner don't like 'em, he can buy ones to his own preference. But I like the way the wide ones look.
