Southside Fly-Fishing

3 жыл бұрын

In this video, I introduce my version of the pheasant tail nymph, one of my BEST flies for trout, and show it to some hungry wild brownies. Fortunately they love it almost as much as I do!
If the water is low and the temperatures are high, tributaries are often the BEST places to focus your energy when trout fishing. The morning I filmed this video, the bigger rivers were down to their bones. But the water in this valley was cold and I was able to find trout (and a grayling!) feeding in the deeper oxygenated parts of the stream. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that fly fishing for trout is adapting your approach to the conditions. This us much more important than having expensive gear and casting sexy loops!
I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did making it (you can probably tell I had fun making the introduction!). And if you did, please drop me a comment and consider subscribing to the channel.

@@richardtodd6181 it's a good early/late season pattern for me. Apparently they take it for a pin fry but it's just as likely the attraction of a bit of colour and flash. Surprised to hear it doesn't work for you in NE. Trout are peculiar beasties!

Nice video and a few lovely fish. Great to see Scottish content. Can't argue about the PTN it is simplicity in itself and various tungsten bead concoctions account for most of the fish I catch when nymph fishing. 👍

Well, that was lovely. You’re getting better with each video. I really liked the informative piece up front about the PTN, and the explanation of why you use it and when. Also, the little B-roll clips of the details you see when you are out are wonderful as they add a lot of mood and atmosphere for the viewer. As a noob, I’m interested in how you are presenting the fly - it would be good to have 30 seconds of how you’ve rigged it and why. You might want to try the Rode Wireless Go II mic setup btw. I find it really good when plugging into a GoPro media mod - very good sound quality indeed. Keep them coming - I’m inspired!

Cheers Andrew! Really appreciate the comment and the suggestions. I'm planning to upgrade the filming kit this winter and a proper mic is high on the list. Also appreciate the suggestion of showing the indicator rig. A few guys are asking for the same, so I'll try to remember to show it in the next video. I always get carried away filming the leaves and the beasties and forget to show what I'm actually doing! But your comment's a good reminder 🙏🏼

Be running full of mud I’m sure. You mentioned the presentation, Could you explain your indicator you use and how you choose your depth that you fish it at. I never seem to get it right. Dragging and caught up or possibly to short and not hitting the right areas. Tight lines

@SouthsideFlyFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate. The ground has been so dry, I'm sure it won't take the Cart long to clear out again. Doesn't seem to have come up much at all! I use those wool indicators, but a couple of people have asked about them so I'll try to do a bit on them in the next video. Depth is really tricky and you could spend all of your time fiddling with the length of your leader. In the summer I would err on the shorter side, just because fish will tend to be looking up, even if they're sitting on the bottom. A rule I've heard is to aim for 1.5 times the depth of the stream for normal flows, and if you're fishing super slack water obviously go for about the same depth as the river. Keep persevering with it mate. Can be absolutely deadly when you get it right 🙏🏼🐟🎣

Awesome video as normal mate! Would love some tips on fishing high coloured water? I fish the kelvin and it has been raining non stop in the sunny west end for the last two days!
@SouthsideFlyFishing
@SouthsideFlyFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Craig! I'd go with brighter, heavy flies. Nymphs with a bit of flash or a weighted squirmy can be absolutely deadly in coloured water. Streamers like a Martin's Minnow can also work well, even for smaller fish. They'll tend to be hanging out in the slacker water where they can get out of the main flow so concentrate on areas like near the bank, behind rocks etc. Most of us struggle in high, coloured water so don't have overly high expectations! Rivers like the Kelvin go down just as quickly as they go up so if you can hit it as the water is falling and clearing out, you might do really well. Could be sea trout and grilse in the system now so make sure you're fishing with strong tippet! Tight lines 🙏🏼🐟🎣

Love your videos pal. I’m across in Edinburgh and fish lots of areas that are very similar, in fact I think I recognise this area if it’s on my side of the country.? I’m usually fishing the water of leith or the Lothian esks with plenty of blue lining just outside the city.

Thanks mate! I've only fished over your way a few times but there are some lovely little rivers on the east coast. I actually have a good idea which river you think I'm fishing in this video, but I'm much further to the west! Tight lines 🙏🏼🐟

Is your first choice the new Zealand style indicator m8? Tight lines davie 🎣
@SouthsideFlyFishing
@SouthsideFlyFishing 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Davie. If the fish are breaking the surface on a stream like that, I'd usually go with the dry or the dry/dropper. But when there's nothing showing on top, I find 1 or 2 nymphs under an indicator is a consistently effective approach

Brilliant video once again, were you just fishing the single nymph under the indicator or did you have a dropper?
@SouthsideFlyFishing
@SouthsideFlyFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Dave! Just a single nymph here. If I'm fishing the bigger rivers, I'll pop two nymphs under an indicator but the single seems to be more than enough for the smaller streams.

@SouthsideFlyFishing
@SouthsideFlyFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate! If you go on amazon and search for 'go pro hat clip', I use the cheapest and simplest little clip on there. It was about £6 I think! The strike indicator is a bit of Loon indicator yarn but I've just got myself a bunch of the NZ strike indicator material that comes with plastic tubing. Few people asking about the indicator rig so I'll try to do a wee bit on it in the next video. Tight lines! 🙏🏼🐟🎣

Sorry to do it but I'm going to have to bring up the bobber subject. Do you use one all the time or do you use it for tactical reasons? Im a bit of a one trick pony and tend to stick with french nymph or dry on small streams.
@SouthsideFlyFishing
@SouthsideFlyFishing 2 жыл бұрын
It’s a good question! I’ve tended towards the indicator after fishing dry/dropper for years. Having a dry on is great, and does give you another chance of hooking a fish. But when you want to fish a heavier nymph or two nymphs, you either end up sinking your dry fly or having to tie on something so big and buoyant, you might as well bite the bullet and fish an indicator! I’ll fish the dry almost whenever I see rising fish. And I definitely think French nymph and euronymphing have their day. My reason for not using the euro rod in this stream is mainly the need to get in and about all those overhanging branches- much easier with a little glass rod! But I also feel long line nymphing gives you a bit of a stealth advantage especially in clear water or when you might throw a shadow/silhouette over the fish. Long story short, I try to tailor the approach to the conditions. But find the indicator is versatile enough for most situations and it’s easier to switch to a dry when you’ve already got a long tapered leader tied on 👍🏼. Tight lines 🙏🏼🎣🐟

you are using a fiber-glass rod, right? Can you tell us what exactly rod it is?
@SouthsideFlyFishing
@SouthsideFlyFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, mate! This one is an Epic 476 Fastglass 4wt rod. It belongs to my good buddy Liam, but it's an absolute joy to use. Presents a dry fly beautifully and has enough backbone to cast weighted nymphs. I also own a Vision Glass Trout rod and am planning on adding some more glass to the collection for next year. Tight lines 🙏🏼🐟🎣

Do you need a permit for all these places you go to? Or is it not needed
@SouthsideFlyFishing

Hi Connor, short answer is 'yes'. You need permission to fish 99% of waters in Scotland. The good thing is they're usually so cheap up here compared to anywhere else in the world I've fished. Tight lines 🙏🏼🐟
