Good morning Helen, Further to your question about the impact on the ceiling height. The plaster board is only about 15mm thick or thereabouts and was screwed into the joists with plaster board nails then plastered over. It saved all the hassle of getting the Artex removed and disposed of and also, could you have imagined all the dust it would have created? We did the plasterboard side ourselves and a great plasterer friend did the rest. All of my ceilings were done in this way. The Artex in some of my rooms was about 1 inch thick! I hope this information is of help to you.

I had the Artex in my house plaster boarded over and the ceilings were re-plastered. Less mess and much easier. You may wish to go down this route? I look forward to following you on your journey
