Small Town Stealth Camping

Well, technically a hamlet, it used to be a village, but perfect for stealth camping. I packed my hammock to a great camp spot behind a ball diamond. Little towns are an excellent opportunity for stealth camping, there aren't the crowds of the big city, but there is the possibility locals will be more vigilant regarding people they don't recognize. Great camping trip overall though!

I certainly have never heard of any in Alberta anyway. The place I'm from had an overabundance of two things. Bars/liquor stores and churches. It was in the Guinness record for a awhile for the shear amount of churches per capita.

Hey Steve, don't be too quick to throw out that particular non-DEET mosquito spray. The one you have is 20% icaridin (sometimes called picaridin) which in my experience (with heavy population of mosquitos in the summer in Japan) is actually better than DEET (I know hard to believe), but you have to treat it differently. It doesn't really repel them away but 100% prevents them from biting, but only in the exact areas you've applied it. So treat it more like sunscreen and thoroughly wet and spread it across all your exposed skin (though don't get it in your eyes). One reason it's better than DEET is that it doesn't really have any strong smell or sticky feel, and it won't melt plastic, so you can apply tons of it. 20% icaridin is lab tested as effective as 30% DEET but because it's easier to go ham applying multiple coats of the icaridin you can get protection that would take an uncomfortable amount of DEET to equal. I know it sounds like I'm shilling for it, but I just really wanted to inform you because I'm super glad I found out about it living here in with the amount of mosquitos in Japan. I enjoy your content and can see that mosquitos are an issue for you so just wanted to give a heads up on it. (BTW there are tons of other "non-DEET" sprays that don't do much at all, so check label to make sure it has 20% icaridin (or picaridin).

After all this time I finally realise why I love Steve’s videos so much: I’m so damn paranoid about everything I do, born of a childhood fear of getting in trouble for the most irrational things. But Steve, he just goes out there and is like “I’m literally going to walk into a forest and sleep there and just Not Get Caught”. Me too. I grew up on the edge of town with tracks about a mile away across empty fields. (Well, after a few years, it was no longer the edge of town and the fields weren't empty, but you could still hear the trains at night.)

I rented a place with my ex for a while near a rail yard, and it's hard to describe how soothing the sounds of a rail yard is. there's a lot going on there but it's all at a slow even pace. currently I live next to a passenger rail, those trains blast through but they're going really quick, will be gone in under a minute, and they're not very noisy, in contrast to a freight line which might have longer trains rumbling past for half an hour, which rumbling can be so loud you can't even talk to a person sitting next to you.

One thing I always like about your videos is the meals you make, they look pretty good for camping meals, some of them are better than my own camping meals!!! I'm camping right now (not stealth though). I've noticed in every campground I've been to in the past year, everyone has an rv or camper. I'm the only one in the whole campground with a tent. It's like a glorified trailer park. Might have to do more stealth camping. Thanks Steve!

Are you staying at private campgrounds? Most of those are designed for rv's as they can charge more. If tenting or even sleeping in your vehicle look for state/provincial or national parks. Cheaper and WAY better.

Hello Steve! The Thermacell seems like a lifesaver literally. However, a cheaper repellent, I found is unscented incense sticks, upwind of me, chases skeeters away. They don't like any smoke. Speaking of smoke, bud is finally legal in Virginia! Hooray! Happy Trails Steve & everyone.....

I think the best way to stealth crack a can is to start pulling the tab so the edges crack, let some of the gas hiss out slowly, then put your thumb over the cut-out gently (not pushing because you don't want to push your thumb into the sharp hole!) but just keep your thumb over the metal while you pull the tab the rest of the way, your thumb blocks some of the high pitch of the "tinny" sound of the metal cracking apart and crinkling, the softness of your skin kinda muffles it in a way, if that makes sense. And you wanna do it all really slowly. Sometime I have to stealth crack a secret beer camping after my friend falls asleep because she's trying to stay sober and I don't want her to start craving a beer because she heard me crack it. Also do the same at home sometimes if I don't want my dad to know there's beer because he can overdo it sometimes XD so I have mastered the stealth crack pretty well.

Stealth beer cracking tip: Put the thumb of one hand over the little oval that opens and use the other hand to raise the tab as you press down a little with your thumb. Generally, this will mean that your thumb with both muffle the sound and the downward pressure will help the opening of it not to be as sudden, which means less overall force in a single area, which contributes to the cracking sound. At the very least, people might not know what they heard. Also remember that soda cans and energy drink cans all make that same sound so it's not like people immediately think beer when they hear it.

It can be done single handed and is even more effective at silencing if you use the meaty part of your palm (base of the thumb, the Thenar) pressed over the opening. Almost completely silent.

Laughed about your “juicy brown recluse spider” in your boots, although it is not a laughing matter, I was bitten in my lower left leg about 4 hours into a trip from central MA to Aiken, SC (1000mi, 2days drive). Didn’t realize the severity of the situation until I reached SC in great pain and agony and then spent 2 weeks in University Hospital, Augusta, GA and almost lost my lower leg and suffered two operations. Recovery was long and painful. Now just a slightly disfigured and discolored limb is a constant reminder about what those little bastards can do!

I've been watching Steve for so long every time i see a upload I'm like a school child again running home from school to watch my favourite show lol. I never thought the first time I would get to use my learnt Stealth skills would be in a hospital car park lol. My sister got very sick and asked us to take her to hospital (myself drive and my mother take her in as hospital rules atm only 1 person allowed in with the sick person) I drove them them up and got there at 10.30am I pulled up in the 1 of 7 drop off zones and thought i will wait here as long as possible because the parking lot is paid parking and was hoping to get away with free parking lol anyway security started walking around by 12pm so i got out of there before there was problems i then drove into the big layered car park i pulled up on the first floor as there was many available spots and just watched KZbin until i started getting tired and had started to worry as i had work the next day and couldn't take the day off. So i remembered my mother has a massive blanket in the boot of her 4 wheel drive so if she has something big in the boot she puts the blanket over it so it doesn't scratch the boot lol anyway I by 1.30 i thought i need sleep so i got ot off the car had a stretch and then put the back seats down and the front driver's seat down so i could slip in and get away fast if needed i then drove around the car park looking for a nice undercover spot where i could see if needed but people really wouldn' t have the need to walk past and see me. I found a spot then slipped into the back without getting out off the car i put the blanket over myself I ate the banana I brought with me a had a little bit of water to wash it down. 😅 I slept like a baby lol I was so comfortable and warm i slept right up until they called me to get them from emergency at 4.30 am lucky i slept there because i just went home got into my work clothes and went straight to work. Sorry for the long story 😅 thank you Steve for all the lessons 👍 lol my step 2 was water lol

I've had the same hennessy hammock since 2012 and used it every year in very rough conditions. It still has basically no signs of wear. One of the best purchases I've ever made.

A hammock is responsible for the absolute worst night I have ever had on the trail. You've been warned. The second night on that weekend I snuck into the campground further south on the trail. No way was I going thru another night in a hammock

Make sure you get one long enough for you - the Hennessy ones are borderline for many people, anything even shorter is a recipe for a *very* bad nights sleep, because there's not enough room to set it up so you can actually lie flat... 11'/3.3m and up (length of cloth) at a 30° sag and feet somewhat higher than the head works well for most. Also, consider getting an underquilt - insulation doesn't work when compressed, but we all know Steve is frost resistant to a ridiculous degree...

My family has slept in hammocks for years now. There is no more comfortable way to sleep. For camping, it's a no brainer. Sleeping on the ground causes untold aches and pains. If I'm good and tired as when bike or back packing, I wake in the same position as I fell asleep. The complete body cradling effect of the gathered end hammock completely eliminates pressure points. Pressure points are what cause you to involuntarily move during the night. A side sleeper will have pressure points on shoulder, hips, head and leg parts. Not so with a hammock. I love your Hennessy. Bringing me back Steve. Used to hitchhike long distances throughout US. Stealth camping was a constant, critical component of survival You've discovered the alcohol stove, its amongst my favorites for the following reasons: 1. Fuel can be purchased many places not just outdoor shops. 2. Does really well in windy conditions. 3. Consistent flame. 4. Very cheap. 5. The flame isn't bright and is quiet, good for stealth. There's even a cool design you can male from a soda can and a zippo wick (+ access to some tools)

I definitely agree about trains in the distance. I used to live along the river directly in front of a power plant that was a mile across the river. There was a train track about 75 yards behind my house. If the trains didn't put you to sleep the hum from the power plant would.

That “magic heat“ is Sterno. They do last six hours. It is what is often used to keep the steam tables warm at weddings and things like that. They do work great, low but steady heat. Thanks for the great video!

I lived on cooking with Sterno. I had a little hibachi rack and 2 red bricks, and I could cook in my van when I was homeless for about 2 years. One lasted me 2-3 days.

I've had some that said 2.5-3 hours. Last a week. I think alot depends on how your using it, and the temp. If it's cold out, they seem to go quicker. But warm out, n they last awhile

Have you ever used a penny stove? : take two cans, works best with 24 oz cans. Cut the bottom off and fit them together. Poke a hole in the middle of one (the topside) an also 6 holes on the outside of the rim. Fill with nail polish remover or icy propyl alcohol an put a penny in the center over the hole(light it first) an wahla burns for ever an the fire is invisible if you use flammable alcohol. Cheap as crap too! Just set a pot on top an cook whatever. Look it up for visual details! Nice video by the way. Recently found you a couple days ago when I became homeless. The “backpacker” thermacell is the best model, as you can attach to regular isobutane cans instead of having to buy their ridiculously overpriced plastic fuel canisters.

But it is way less portable. The third model (phone like one with a handle) has a carrying pouch available which works wonders while slowly walking/fishing, hunting etc. The plastic canisters are refillable with lighter gas if you get an adapter and remove the gray node under the connector!

I love your "contentious" meals Steve! I love to cook also and even when I camp I like to be "fancy" sometimes. In fact I'm hopefully, if I don't chicken out or something, gonna do something kinda fancy when I do a stealth camp here in November some time. It's interesting what you can do even with limited elements. Last time I did car camping with my friend, I made french toast one morning (brioche slices in ziploc bags, cracked eggs into a jar to carry and spoon out when needed, and a bag of flour and bag of sugar, my camping "pantry" items), and the second day I made eggs, sausage and biscuits with sausage pepper gravy - made the biscuits at home the morning of departure and cooled them, put in a freezer bag, envelope of peppered gravy mix, eggs in the jar except for the 2 I used for french toast the previous morning, and a packet of heat-and-serve sausage links, 4 of which were chopped into the gravy at the end. I also love cooking a ziploc-marinated steak on the open fire or grill and sauteing onions and mushrooms in olive oil I brought in a little spice bottle I cleaned out. And sometimes I'm lazy and just put a can of chicken into a Knorr Fettucine Alfredo side. It's all good lol. I'm also gonna try to do either a cobbler or a crisp with ziploc baggeed ingredients and a can of fruit pie filling, we'll see how that turns out.

when I first started cyclo-commuting, I had a two and a half hour commute, the very first time I did it I had trained myself up to a 4 hour round trip, so I figured I was ready. the trip in to work was great, the trip home was equally great... UNTIL it wasn't... I felt amazing through the first half of the trip but about halfway through the third quarter I started to feel it, and then with only 8 miles left to go, there was nothing left in the tank. this was about 1:00 a.m. so I dragged my bike into the woods and I figured I'd try to take a recovery nap. I tried piling leaves up around me, I slept for about 2 hours before I got too cold and I wasn't able to sleep anymore so I dragged the bike back out to the road and I was so tired that all I could do was push up even the smallest of hills and then pedal on the flats and coast down the hills. I did this for the last 8 Miles three of which were a very steep climb... oh what a relief it was to drag myself into that bed when I got home! when I woke up I realized that I needed to have something with me if I was going to do this. I picked up my two person North Face Cumulus and I knew immediately that it was too heavy and also too big to take on a bike. I then remembered a paracord hammock that my father had had it back in the 80s, & started researching on KZbin how to make one, as I couldn't find any place to buy one and as you do you go down rabbit holes, I found a video where somebody made shelter out of a utility tarp, and one of them was a hammock where you fold part of the tarp over your head on a Ridgeline to serve as a roof. I gave that a go and of course it was a shitty idea because utility tarps don't breathe, but not only that when it rains the water comes right in through the ends and because it's waterproof fills up and becomes a bathtub. this is in complete contrast to the demonstration given by the person who made the video for whom the technique worked great... and I call bullshit. in the comments on that video where I was leaving my dissatisfaction as a warning to others, I saw somebody had posted a link to Hammock Forums and there my real adventures begin! ended up getting a beginner cheapo hammock set up from Walmart based on advice given there with the idea of graduating up to the better stuff later which is exactly what I did. I noticed on those long cyclocommutes that my recovery sleep was so much better than when I slept in tents. when I slept in a tent I always woke up all stiff and tired & the first hour after waking up during camping trips would always be spent trying to limber up as I tried to make coffee. my job is at different places every day so I might be commuting to the office or I might be commuting to where I'm going for the day it all depended and if it was far enough away from my house I would leave the night before and there were specific places where I would stealth-hang my hammock along the bike paths that were a short distance from the destination. I might be a little sleepy when I got up, but my back would never be stiff. I could just roll out of the hammock pack it up and bike to the nearest coffee source on my way to the job. it was a blessing when Starbucks started making those little cans of Cubano espresso because that eliminated having to stop for coffee. I could just chug it when I got to the job. I've now been working at this job for 10 years that means I've been Cyclocommuting for 9 years, and year-round semi-stealth base-camping with a hammock for eight years, allowing my brother to have full run of the house that we both own. people that know me think I'm crazy for doing it, but honestly I'm the sane one... my brother's got a nut job girlfriend and two insane toddlers, and I don't want anything to do with that situation they can have the house

I've had pretty good luck keeping mosquitoes away using a lantern full of citronella tiki torch fuel. The smoke free stuff works great if you also want light, but the regular stuff will black out the glass pretty quick if you dont

What I love about a village or small town is that they are always clean. No litter. Whereas cities are filled with litter from people who have brought their bad habits from other countries and provinces. I once nicely asked a young man and woman to pick up the napkin they had dropped on my lawn. The guy apologized and picked up. The girl wined "it's just a napkin!"
