One of the features of LifePo4 batteries is that they have a very flat discharge curve. They maintain a constant voltage through about 90% of their capacity and then drop off very sharply. For this reason, you usually have to measure consumption via monitoring current through a shunt rather than monitoring voltage. I expect your batteries will be fine, they'll have an internal BMS which will have shut off the power before you over discharged them.

Hub drive has one issue you must address. Because of the torque the spokes loosen. After each trip give them an inspection. On the trailer, with all the weight, do the same. Lift the wheel, lay your fingers inside the spokes close to the axle and then with your fingers move the rim back and forth. You'll feel it if the spoke nipples are loose.
@theejoeylee2 жыл бұрын
@messin with mikeyup. just like a guitar string!
@thomasdurant79072 жыл бұрын
Also, make sure you have zip ties and practice using them to true a wheel with junk wheels ahead of time. You can look it up, but you wrap it around a fork leg and cut the ends to a point and set the tip just touching the rim. You do need to learn which spoke to tighten to pull the rim the direction you want, but never loosen if you screw up. If you check it daily at least, they shouldn't get too out of wack to fix. As a back up to the back up, zip ties shouldn't be the primary tool, a brake pad can be rigged to do the same with less precision. Oh also, brake disks should be checked! They can be straightened with channel locks and you can use the zip ties to check. I am a wheel builder.

Interesting video Steve, as always! I have watched a lot of videos concerning travel trailer LiFePO4 battery conversions. One thing that they always include is NOT a voltage meter, but a state of charge/battery monitor meter. Something like the RBM500-CA from Renology. When you charge them up, it shows how many Amp hours are left available, instead of volts. As some of other comments have said, LiFePO4 batteries can show 100% and then 0% with no in between. If you get yourself a BMS, and that battery monitor, you should have a more accurate view of what you have left. The BMS will allow all batteries to charge equally so they all have the same charge. Cheers!

I have the Victron BMV-712 bluetooth model. Works well in my camper van. I guess it wouldn’t add to much weight to a e-bike scenario.
@magnets10002 жыл бұрын
The fault is more likely the batteries than the ebike kit, since it worked on 24v after you disconnected a cell. The BMS in one battery probably hit the low volt cutoff.
@campingwithsteve2 жыл бұрын

@@campingwithsteve LiFePO cells also normally read lower than Li-ion - 3.2v per cell vs 3.7v per cell (nominal, not full charge). There may be something kooky in how the eBike controller is reading those voltages. But still, I saw the meter at the start there reading 100% charge, when you'd think it'd read 90-something percent if that were the difference. Look forward to the result on this one, that's interesting.

I have been watching your video's for a few years now and am a BIG fan, love them all! In the last year I have learned loads about LiFe PO4 batteries in trying to equip my little RV correctly. While I could be wrong, I think you ran into a couple of the more complex issues I have learned about these batteries: A) LiFe PO4 batteries have a different discharge profile then the older LeadAcid/AGM/Gel batteries. LeadAcid/AGM/Gel batteries will slowly loose voltage allow you to easily check the output voltage to figure out the state of charge. On the other hand, LiFe PO4 batteries hold their voltage really well and drop so little it is hard to tell what the state of charge is. I have shunt in my RV that is designed to be calibrated to the battery bank and actually counts the current used to determine the actual state of charge and is accurate to about 1%. I know you like to operate with less expensive equipment (which I think is great), but I don't know how accurate that reading was you gave us as you left the camp. I am wondering if maybe the battery was actually a lot lower than you realized... But there is another issue, which I think might have been a bigger cause for things not working out: B) LiFe PO4 batteries in series While LiFe PO4 batteries can be put in parallel to increase the current, most cannot be wired series to up the voltage. The reason is about balancing the batteries correctly. Inside a 12v LiFe PO4 battery there are four individual cells AND a Battery Management System (BMS). The BMS monitors the voltage across the four cells to keep them consistent. I don't know exactly how it does that, but I know it is really important. I know of one company that sells 12v LiFe PO4 batteries which CAN be run in series. They are very expensive batteries in general and when run in series REQUIRE an external BMS to keep all the different v12 balanced. I am sure they have BMS's inside too. I don't know, but guess somehow (more then likely via Bluetooth or something) the external BMS is able to communicate with the internal BMS so the whole battery system acts as one big BMS. All in all, a very expensive setup. I think each of their 12v 100Ah batteries is around 1000 USD, so I am thinking a 2000 USD eBike and an extra battery or two might be the cheaper chicken ;)

I've always felt that midmount motors were better. I prefer that the bike be a pusher, and not a puller. Plus, having that motor up front effects steering and it is unsprung weight. Time to throw a bafang mid-drive on. Have a 2wd bike. Heck, if you're going to be hauling tons of batteries around, toss a motor on the trailer too.
@MrMontanaNights2 жыл бұрын
It's good timing that you posted this as I've been planning a cross country (N->S, not quite xc but from Wichita KS to Oshkosh WI for next July) trip for next year w/ my e-bike towing a small trailer with a solar setup on it. Been following the channel for a while now but somehow missed this latest episode and didn't see it until I searched "bike stealth camping" and it popped up lol. I'm planning on having a little over 2000WH total (42AH 52V) for a 100 mile range, which is about all I'd want to do in a day in the saddle anyways.
@anthonyreynolds23652 жыл бұрын
I absolutely love your idea with having 3, over sized, over the top batteries in tow! lol Nothing better than using what you have! Although I'll warn that you're likely going to run into issues with this setup because they're LFP batteries... Nearly all e-Bike battery controllers expect to be using NMC or NCA chemistry cells. Nickel based cells have a much higher nominal voltage (3.6-7v vs 3.2) and have a very different voltage curve. You may find yourself in a sudden power loss scenario. Just something to keep in mind. (Edit) I should learn to not comment before watching the end LOL. Honestly, I you'll probably need to bite the bullet and purchase a normal 36V e-Bike battery. Most commonly you'd mount one on a sled in the middle of the bike. It just sucks because battery prices have risen significantly..

You show great patience and a cool head, under less than ideal circumstances. I hope to see an update on the e-bike and trailer. Definitely one of my favourite videos so far, even with all the bumps in the road along he way.

I just completed an e-bike add-on to my old (over 30 years old) CCM bicycle! :) I didn't use a kit though it has a 24 volt motor on the back carrier and a big #20 chain to a 10 or 12" diameter gear :) .. I put the battery i the trailer tooo (out of a wheel chair) and the speed controller mounted to plywood on the handle bars ... Not much off the line, but super on the straightaways!!

Oh wow! Those planes were C130’s. My dad was a US Air Force 130 pilot and in the seventies when I was two years old we spent a couple of years in Edmonton, Alberta on an exchange tour with the Canadian Air Force. It was supper cool for me to see those planes still flying the skies. Thanks Steve!

This was a good start for bike camping aside from the setbacks. You should be able to make adjustments to make things easier as time goes on. One of the things to keep in mind about LiFePO4 batteries is that while they make good 12v lead acid replacements, they don't have the same charge/discharge curve. From about 80% to 20% state of charge they will drop from about13.25v to 12.90v so about 0.3v difference for 60% of the discharge curve. That translates to about 1v of variation on a 36V system. A lead acid battery which some of these kits are made for will go from 12.46v @ 80% to 11.98v @ 20% or 0.48V for the middle 60% of the discharge curve which is about 1.5v on a 36 volt system. If this was a NMC Lipo battery (which I am guessing this kit was designed for) the discharge curve would also be very different. A 10S battery (36v system) would be at 39.6v @80% and 32.4v @ 20% or a difference of 7.2v. Since those are 12v batteries they are each made up of 4 cells (or groups of cells) in series and each battery has an internal BMS. If any cell in any of the three batteries drops below around 2.5v most BMS units will turn off the discharge. So you likely used the full capacity or near the full capacity of your batteries and that bike kit was drawing more than 500 watts pulling the weight of the rider along with the weight of the trailer. The kit I own has a 1000 watt motor running at 48v and it is derated to 750 watts at 36V but I noticed that under a heavy load or heavy acceleration it would often go above the 1000 watt rating till it was up to speed with just a rider and a small 30AH 48V pack. If your batteries have blutooth integrated into the BMS you may just need to install an app on your phone to read the internal state of charge and current being consumed. Having an inexpensive voltmeter may also be something to keep with your bike tool kit.

@@Ozmandius no, a sponsorship is when they pay you to show their product and say it a good product. A review is when they only send you a product to test and give your honest opinion. Sponsorship = a commercial for said product. A review is an honest test and opinion.

The planes look like they might be the CL-215 Superscoopers (or something similar) that our local agencies here in southern California lease out from Canada every year during fire season. They pretty much always fly in pairs (I'm not sure why, but they do). And they are yellow and red like the ones you're showing.

Thanks for the post! Due to health issues I am now an armchair traveler. I enjoy your videos when they pop up in my KZbin feed. Although I do specifically look some programs up to watch, I also like coming across random programs to watch. I've discovered a number of interesting sites that way, including yours. I've been randomly watching your videos for several months now. My favorite so far is the one you did in the roundabout. When I was younger, and in better health, my sports were walking, hiking, and biking. They were all free, but also fun. I loved being out in nature. Never went on any solo camping trips though. I have a personal interest in your topic, as I went through a brief spell of being homeless some years ago. I did have temporary rooves over my head, but at one point it looked like I might have to call my Cherokee my new home. It would have been a very cramped home, as most of my possessions were stuffed in the back, and in the front passenger area. The one positive was that I didn't owe any money on it, so I didn't have to worry about it getting repossessed. Anyway, ever since then I have had a tendency to look at places as potential stealth homes, if we're ever to be homeless again. That's why I'm so interested in your videos. Thanks again for these great videos.👏👍🙋🏻♀️
