The Bariatric Diet Guide and Cookbook
www.amazon.com/Bariatric-Diet... Dr. Matthew Weiner is an author and bariatric surgeon who specializes in the treatment of obesity. His practice is located in Tucson Arizona.
Dr. Weiner graduated from the University of Michigan medical school in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He completed his general surgery residency at New York University Hospital in New York City. He practiced in suburban Detroit for 12 years before moving to Tucson in 2019 where he, together with Dr. Guillermo Higa, founded Tucson Weight Loss Surgery.
In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Weiner is the Director of Bariatric Surgery and the Medical Director of Telemedicine at Tucson Medical Center. He is an active member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS) and is a past President of the Michigan State chapter a Bariatric Surgeons.
Dr. Weiner has performed more than 2500 bariatric surgeries since joining his first practice in 2006 and frequently does complicated revision surgery. He also performs general surgery with an interest in stomach and small intestine surgery along with complex hernia repair.
In his first book, A Pound of Cure, Dr. Weiner debunks the traditional understanding of calorie balance driving weight loss and offers a non-surgical solution to those suffering from obesity through nutritional stability.
His second book, How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works: And How to Make it Work for You, is now available on Amazon in paperback and kindle. In this book, Dr. Weiner describes how the hormonal changes that alter your brain, fat stores and hunger signals are the most important component of weight loss surgery, rather than the portion control effects that have been emphasized in the past.
His third publication called The Bariatric Diet Guide and Cookbook is a cookbook for bariatric patients that offers recipes and guidance on the most effective post-surgical diet.
On his website, www.poundofcureweightloss.com, he offers more than 150 videos on a wide array of nutritional and bariatric topics. Lesson plans range from, “Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery” to “The Metabolic Reset Diet” including recipes and meal plans.
Dr. Weiner is licensed to practice in both Arizona and Michigan and even offers Telemedicine appointments. For more information call his office at (520) 420-1000 or check out his many resources below. For more videos and Facebook Live events, subscribe to his KZbin channel.

Can you explain specifically how genetics effect the weight loss, Dr. Weiner?

I had a few stalls after 1 month mark (VSG). After month 2 things started to speed up again. 15 weeks out now. Can be annoying to have stalls but keep at it !

How much did you lose in total?
@TonicBlade
@TonicBlade 6 ай бұрын
@@NaomiCantora 47lbs before surgery and 85lbs after surgery. 150lbs+ total from my highest weight. Sometimes 154lbs down but weight slightly fluctuates now in maintenance mode. Almost at 1 year 1 month now. At my year follow up they mentioned trying to go in maintenance mode for now. Focus on building muscle more than losing weight.

thanks so much for responding! So at 15 weeks you were down 87lbs? And now it's a year and you're down 154? Is that right?

I'm a month out after gastric bypass. Lost 7 kg the first two weeks but now the last two weeks I gained 1 kg back. (BMI from 34.6 to 32.6 this month, -5,8% wl) Trying to be patient and have faith but gah... so worried I'll have the wrong genetics to be succesfull at this. Like every other weightloss attempt ever...

I’m right there with you. I’m scheduled 8/02/21 for RNY. I’m a slow loser with both parents overweight. Been on diet since 10 years. Still hoping success. I will follow all dietary instruction. Will see BMI 41%.

I'm sorry to hear that. It is very frustrating. Talk to your surgeon, they might be able to add GLP-1 agonist medication to help push your weight loss.

Day of surgery weight was 227lbs, I’m 5’4. 3 months post op and am at 198lbs. I’m terrified that my surgery is unsuccessful. Am I correct in thinking that?

@DrMatthewWeiner, when you say 8% of body weight is normal loss for VSG at the 5-6 week mark - does this include weight loss during the 2-week pre-op diet also? Or loss from day of surgery? I am 5’4” and was 218 pre-op; 208 day of surgery; now at 197 at end of 5 weeks post-op. I’m a little nervous. Also, I bought your cookbook! Thank you for the informative videos.

Day of surgery. It sounds like your weight loss is slower than normal. You might want to talk to your surgeon about adding GLP-1's to help increase your weight loss.

That's actually great! I'm almost a year out RNY and have battled. Stalled out at around 200. Lost roughly 70 in a year, 90+/- since I started my journey. My surgeon said my new set weight would be around 190-200.. I got to 200 within 6 months from my Rny. Scale has barely budged since. Makes me very sad. I do have other health issues though and a huge one, pancolitis, which is being treated with IV infusion treatments (a type of chemotherapy). No clue if that has anything to do with it. My insurance is being a jerk and not wanting to pay for my follow up appts now so trying to get that taken care of and figured out. But you're doing great!!

Also, if youre dairy intolerant it can be pretty bad the 1st 2weeks on Liquids. Non dairy protein substitutions are just not the same. They're tasty, more starchy, few choices and the Bariatric staff just doesn't seem to have much good suggestions in that department. And, if ure not able to get your proteins you'll most likely weaker and nit as able to be active which doesn't help weight loss.

I had my vsg in May 2018 and no matter how i eat or drink i can't go past 248lbs🙄 i am 5"7 sw 300lbs and surgery day 285lbs, what can be going on? I did my stages of liquid and pureed foods and after 5 days only lost 2lbs...so frustrating 😑

Also watch those terribly acidic Sugar free jello and ice pops... they're artificial foods. If you're dairy sensitive and you're doing dairy proteins your body will retain fluids.

I wish there was a way to test if your genetics would work with bariatric procedures. I'm a pretty slow loser too, and if I had known that ahead of time I probably would've skipped the suegery and just kept losing weight the old fashioned way. All the extra stuff that comes from the surgery has not been worth it for the weight that I've lost.
