Not necessarily true. There is plenty of food in the world. Just think of how much the west is wasting for the sake of profit. Food isn't an issue if it's distributed well. While there is a war in Ukraine going on, we are still living in the most peaceful time ever. Inflation monetary wise is only a temporary issue should there be a crisis. Diplomacy is at an all time high as well so there are good odds for resolving them. At the same time technology is constantly improved. Climate change however is a real threat to global food production and living conditions.
@Abcflc

@@nordicnostalgia8106 when have resources been properly distributed? are common diets, household products and common possessions of better quality than 50 years ago? We have been in decline due to more people and less resources. Optimists have been eating their words for decades.
@nordicnostalgia8106
@nordicnostalgia8106 2 жыл бұрын
@@Abcflc I don't know where you're getting this from. A good motivator for better distribution is increased food prices which would rise if food becomes more scarce. Higher prices means wasting is less viable and gets more attention while exports becomes more profitable. Another thing that's possible is to eat less meat. Producing meat is inefficient so we could have a lot more if we ate less of it.

Nigeria is ridiculous. 700 million people by 2100 from around 205 million today. The problem? There isn't enough water in Nigeria. Unlike rather wet India or China, with their enormous rivers (the Ganges has the largest delta in the world while the Yangtze is the third longest river on Earth) half of Nigeria is in the Sahel, a region renowned for its lack of water. 350 million of those people, at least, will be in this very dry half of Nigeria. Where are they going to get sufficient amounts of water for those people? The Niger River is not nearly big enough for that, especially when you consider that Niger, the nation right north of Nigeria (which is even drier) will have 250 million people by 2100. This is so unsustainable it's not even funny...

Further, I do wonder how birth rates will change as people panic over decreasing populations, but that is even more speculative.

A declining population is not a good thing, and I think 'stagnating' is used because it has a negative connotation, because if more and more old people are sucking up capital in an economy, that means fewer and fewer young people have the money to take care of themselves because all of it goes to pay for elderly pensions. Demographics like that are asking for a societal breakdown or riot, and we're already starting to see it.

More than anything I think current Africa is similar to 1940s-1970s Asia. So as birth rates fall, development will begin and they might reach huge economies by the end of the century, but again, it’s all hopes. Also, some models suggest some countries that have suffered over 30+ years of population decline will eventually see an uptick of fertility in the mid-century. Past example of this was the US, birth rate in the 70s was as low as it is today at 1.7, but through the mid-80s it started kicking back up again, it would rise all the way to 2.1 in 2007, it actually surpassed 1957 as the year with most births in US history. Post-2008 birth rates fell again, but still, that recovery in fertility and obviously migration has been the reason the US population still grows far faster than the average developed country. In the future, I believe that Europe will eventually flatline or kick back up, as well as places in Asia. Perhaps by 2080 the new focus will be Latin America, it’s already the slowest-growing population of any developing region, Brazil and Mexico will already enter decline in the 2050s, although studies showed that Mexico will continue the trend of the US and Canada and will start to attract more migrants, while there has been a steady influx of Mexican migrants who have started to return to the country. But still, if it all holds up I believe that by 2080 Latin America will be the new region in fast decline, as I said, most countries in the region are already starting to age. Back in the 70s the region’s average age was around 16-17, nowadays in some countries like mexico it is about to surpass the 30-year threshold. At this point in time, most LatAm countries’s largest cohort are millennials

I appreciate your presentations! My focus has been on feeding the world 50 years in the future, and I have made many presentations worldwide, but not on KZbin. My major concern with Africa is the relatively slow improvement in agricultural productivity. I say the problem is "culture", not "agricculture". There are many simple steps that farmers and countries could take to improve productivity, but changing traditions in producing food has been slow. One comparison that I use is to ask how many dairy cows it takes to produce 100 liters of milk in 1 day. In the USA it takes 3.5 cows to produce 100 liters in 1 day, but in Tanzania, it takes 176 cows to produce 100 liters in 1 day. GHG output per liter in Tanzania is 7-fold greater than in the USA.

I don’t know why African population growth is borders non Africans. The UN is known to be very inaccurate with their data, and even if the data is right I don’t know why you people are bordered. Nigeria’s population stats is very unreliable. If you leave the business areas like Lagos, and move inland into Nigeria , you will hardly see people. Lagos and kano are the ones with high population because of business. Majority of the remaining states are very underpopulated. Nigeria have always had problems with it population census. There are accusations of corruption (Inflated population counts by states and local governments) to get more resources allocated to their states. All the population census before Nigeria independence have always had problems. Nigeria haven’t had a census since 2006 when the population was about 140 million, but because of the unreliable data the numbers have been inflated to over 200 million. Nigeria will have a peak at 400 million at best. There are also ignorant comments about famine. Nigeria is the largest food producer in Africa. 7th agricultural production in the world. 10th largest arable land in the world. Nigeria only use a small percentage of it arable land for farming. Nigeria doesn’t import food products that much. The government closed all the land borders because of local businesses and farmers so that they can increase their productivity and banned many food items from importation. Nigeria have been battling BOKO haram for about a decade, and now that some peace is returning the government is closing refugee camps and sending farmers back to their lands. I know many people don’t focus on African countries unless it negative media but that doesn’t mean Africa isn’t growing.

I find it difficult to believe that Africa’s population will continue to grow as the majority of nations facing food insecurity and outright famine are located in Africa. Even if world agriculture stays efficient enough and able to share surpluses in the face of serious global warming and consequent drought, I again find it difficult to see how assuagement is available with the problems many African nations face with governance and corruption, both of which are rampant.

The projections over the past 10 years were surprisingly wrong. E.g. Germany was supposed to peak a few years ago, but with a total refugee influx of almost 2 million in the past 7 years this was not the case. Also the fertility rate is increased and are itself difficult to project as people become parents later in life. It is extremely difficult to project even over 1-2 decades so it will be off quite a lot by 2100. the general tendency that effectively all of the growth will happen in Africa will certainly be true.

Meaning that Africa's population can be kept to lower levels precicely by making them more ''successful''. I do wonder what will do in, say, 200 years. Assuming we manage to deal with the climate crisis, the human specie will find itself in a world where the birth rate is below the replacement level. Many developped states today are already offering huge financial help for couples that decide to have children, with relatively little success. I'm not worried about fertility, ageing population etc. We are already too many. We need to stop multiplying. If instead of 10 billion we revert back to 7 billion in 200 years, it will not be a problem. We only need a few million people on this planet for the survival of the species. And in some Western countries euthanasia has become legal and old people have started comitting suicide when they are no longer productive. Others have resources such as properties and savings, so they give it to their younger carers. More older people are working even well into their 80's. It really is not as big of a problem as some want to make it.

After 2040 the human population will drastically decline due to the end of the petroleum economy. Massive famine is inevitable as industrial agricultural comes to end. Some of the population rates you claim are physically impossible such as that of Nigeria. African as a whole has no capacity for triple the population especially as world resources decline with every passing year. The notion that decreasing population will be burdened by the elderly makes no sense. Time and resources raising children will add to the burden since having children doesn’t make the old people go away. So whenever this is mentioned i find it to be parrot talk repeating someone who didn’t think thru a complete thought. It’s lazy thinking. If someone were to say the economy exists to meet human needs then all one needs to do is point out history and the current condition of how people are forced to survive under a money system while homelessness hunger and wars for greed discredit this notion. Somehow our modern way of life finds it completely impossible to house human beings. I guess technology will have to be much more advanced. Its so futuristic. I find it hard to imagine. In a nut shell we’re fucked by a world mafia grinding the earth and her people into money

Firstly, we are inventing ways of becoming increasingly unreliant on petroleum and at the same time have discovered further global hydrocarbon reserves. Peak Oil is coming but it more likely to be decreasing demand than supply that causes it. Secondly, I may be misinterpreting your comment but mentioning massive famine doesn't really make sense with the huge exception of Africa and to a lesser extent the middle east. Thirdly, an increasingly aging population with declining birthrate IS a problem. While children are expensive they can be thought of as an investment wherein they through their labor pay back their debt to society. If the base of your population pyramid is thin there is a significantly higher burden to care for the elderly who have already retired. Fourthly, the economy exists to fulfill human desires (including basic needs) on the basis of whatever rich individual or poor group has the most financial sway. Things are uneven currently and the elites are self serving but the basic idea still applies. Finally, there has been an unprecedented universal collapse in global poverty in the last 50 years. To say homelessness hunger and war for greed negate that doesn't make sense. The current system has done more to raise the standard of living for people the world over. Those who can't see that have locked themselves into a self destructive pessimistic worldview that does not take our bloody history fully into account by comparison.

@@Civilized-Joke War for greed is going on currently in Ethiopia, Syria, Columbia, Honduras, Bolivia,Peru, Nigeria, Niger, Congo, Chad , Somalia, Uganda, Sudan, Pakistan, India, Myanmar, Armenia, Mexico, Guatemala, Cameroon, Libya ,Yemen, Ukraine(American funded Nazi proxies)and Afghanistan and Iraq just had a big ringing out very recently. All I can say to your comment is that I like your optimism. It is true we will live without petroleum simply because the limits are inevitable whether it’s in twenty years or a hundred , but an energy level replacement doesn’t exist. It should be your hope that there is no energy level replacement because there is a race to see what reaches its end first petroleum or the ecology. It doesn’t matter how clean the source that powers modern civilization what humans do with any abundance of energy is grind more earth into money. As long as fossil fuels give more energy than it takes to get them there will be and ever increasing demand for them. Every year more is used than the year before even as technology grows. The child investment point is one that only serves the masters of a money culture.More people being lifted from poverty is a temporary circumstance with ever depleting soil and empty oceans. No amount of uplifting amenities will compensate for this.
