Third time now, the governor has 2 (TWO) adjustments. One controls the range or sensitivity (what you call droop), the other controls the limit. The range adjustment is quite course, only 3 positions. The internal limit adjustment is also quite course, again 3 positions (which is what you changed). You can adjust the fine limit externally. All you are ever adjusting is the limit. You need to change the range which is the other set of 3 holes, at the other end of the fulcrum.

IT'S Not the Spring! You should have put new weights in the pump and changed the metering valve. They are the components making the pump sluggish. The metering valve should be changed to the plain type valve with no slot in it like yours. P/N 7135-490 New LUCAS not off brand.. The valve can be put in while pump is installed. Ask and I'll tell you how. The metering valve link needs to be replaced and modified., ask and I'll tell you how. I've done this stuff for years, ADS master tech. If all this don't work new weights need be installed as well.... ALOT of these engines where never designed for a generator and have poor rpm droop control unless tweaked heavily. Took me years to figure out how to make it work good enough for a generator.

I think that the DPA governors were only ever good to about 5% so that is running within spec. The engine is a 1960/70s design and was intended for things like trucks, agricultural and construction plant. I had one in a truck in the 70's and those rubber fuel grommets were a nightmare always giving out so that in the end I carried a can full of them with me at all times, still have few left but the truck went many years ago, driving down the motorway one day, looked in the mirror and saw this great white could streaming out behind me, fuel was pumping straight onto the exhaust manifold. I pulled over and had just finished changing the grommet when the police pulled up to ask if I was all right.

I was thinking that, the CAV rotary pumps were never outstanding for precise control.
@rpujol
@rpujol 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with that. On a DPA pump with a mechanical governor, you will not get isochronous operation at 100%, always will be a significant droop around 4-5% . A mechanical governor does not have more precision. The only solution to get a true 0% droop is to install an electronic governor on the engine. It can be done in two ways on this pumps: (1) Install the electronic governor control rod tied to the stop lever and adjust the throttle lever fixed about aprox. 2000 RPM on your application, and get the governor control the RPM through the stop lever that will directly move the metering valve and adjust it to 1800 RPM. (2) Remove the internal parts of the governor of the DPA pump (weights and spool) and tie the metering valve directly to the throttle lever (a new internal linkage need to be fabricated) and then the electronic governor will control the metering valve through the throttle lever, and you will still have the stop lever as a emergency stop also. I have done both systems and they work perfect, and you get a 0% droop and constant engine speed in all range at 1800 RPM. Of course you will need to install an electronic pickup on the flywheel ring gear, and mount the actuator of the electronic governor close to the fuel injector pump and fabricate the control linkage.

@@Equiluxe1 Yep, ISTR the vacuum governors were even worse, the Leyland Comet truck being an example of hunting dreadfully. The tech is here, electronic control is the way now; from what I can see a mechanical governor would need so much gain to maintain ± 1Hz frequency accuracy that it would start hunting.
@Equiluxe1

@@572Btriode I had an Albion in the 70's that hunted on tick over so much it rocked the lorry, that had a vacuum governor and also had a butterfly throttle so plenty of smoke when the throttle was blipped. I think very close governing using a mechanical governor with very heavy weights like steam engines used weights of around twenty pounds or more, even then I dont think you will get a one Hz in sixty no load to full load, that requires electronics to follow so close.

It might be that governor spring that’s stretched or in the wrong clip hole it looks like it’s not opening the throttle up to take the load. I would be getting a new spring maybe. Perkins in the Uk still sell back up parts or any diesel pump reconditioning shop here in the Uk still service these old cab pumps I had my boat one done last year it got some salt water in the pump when they take it apart the poured the pump out it had completely rotted out. They rebuilt it with no issues.

Maybe there's a little adjustment on the min/max rod spring? I'd guess that the governor's weight basket is working properly, maybe there's too spring pressure on the rod going to the metering valve? It's hard to tell on the audio, but it doesn't seem like governor was even trying to compensate for the load. Whatever it is, I'm guessing you're close to solving it. I'd also be curious on how much return you have in the fuel line. Looking forward to part three.

Hi good videos however you have made a mistake with the fuel filters. I live in the UK and work on these quite regularly as they are still used on standby sets . You have two secondery fuel filters on the set ( 33166 ) , the filter on the glass water separater should be a primary filter ( stainless gauze 30 micron plus). All this is doing is removing the water and large debris before it clogs the lift pump the the secondery filter takes a bite. The way you have it the first filter clogs Two quickly. Look though the hole at the bottom of the correct filter and you will understand, hope this helps.

It has quite a bit of frequency droop and it is a lower hours unit I believe it has 4000 hours. I set the govenor to 63.5hz and with all the electric motors on the plant running its about 70kw load and it drops the frequency on the generator to about 60.5. I don't know how precise the governors are in a CAV pump.

@572Btriode
@572Btriode 2 жыл бұрын
Can't see it worrying a computer, they have switch-mode supplies and nowadays no voltage adjustments, they take "AC", typically 40 ~ 400Hz and 90v to 300V, it's what a switch mode supply does. Can't see a problem with any domestic appliances except synchronous clocks, they'd be off a bit.
@18robsmith
@18robsmith 2 жыл бұрын
Modern computer power supplies would hardly notice the drop as most are designed to run on very large frequency ranges, typically 48-62Hz. What does get upset are induction motors, old fashioned (mains) clocks, and of course any transfer switch if the generator is run in any sort of mains-synchronised mode.

I'm sure the antisense works absolutely fine for the injectors...but...I recently replaced all 6 injectors on my OM642 diesel (Mercedes diesel). Mercedes has a 'special grease' meant for coating their injectors. I dont know if its snake oil ($30 for their grease), but given the fact that crush washer seals WILL leak, anything is better than nothing to prevent diesel tar from building up. Kinda nice to see someone else doing this though, I thought I was the only one who bothered.

Hi ,great video,thinking about a problem I had a few years ago,same problem,engine drop,I seem to think ,the spring needs to be in the middle hole on the finger,the innermost hole on the throttle arm,that give minimal drop on load,according to Lucas,but it all depends on witch weights ,carrier,spring,is fitted,Perkins engines are very reliable,as long as clean oil +valve lash,done regular.

The governors on those rotary injection pumps were never good enough for generator applications. The Lucas CAV Rotodiesel and the Stanadyne Roosamaster pumps were mainly used in automotive and agricultural applications that didn't need precise engine speed regulation. Those governors will give you a speed droop of approximately 5% under the best of conditions. My suggestion would be to see if that Basler controller has an electronic governor function built into it. If it does, you could set up an actuator to operate the throttle on the injector pump and use the Basler controller to control the engine speed based on the generator output frequency. This would be similar to what you did on the RoiLIne V8 governor.

Stanadyne made good generator pumps generally 3%. I once worked on a few NEW John Deere 1,200 RPM gen-sets the factory couldn't get right. I ran a few and found the weak points. I disassembled and re-did the internals and achieved 3% regulation at 1,200. They wanted to know how I achieved the 3% regulation. I told them I would divulge the info if I would get a check for my troubles. They denied my offer and I told them to go pound sand. Shortly there after they had to go to electronic controls. 1,200 full load to 1,236 no load not easy to do mechanically but I did it.

As far as I know, and can tell from some searches for Stanadyne spec sheets, DB2 (I think that's the next gen pump after whatever is on that?) governor regulation is only rated for 3-5% accuracy at ~1800 RPM and 7-10% all speed. So considering it's an older model pump and it's not new, it's actually about right. Not sure you'll be able to improve it that much. I've never seen any of my older IDI diesels with Stanadyne rotary pumps maintain super accurate throttle control.

It has an ADVANCE MECHANISM? I was searching here to learn if any mechanically governed diesel injection systems had an advance mechanism similar to Mercedes which advances the cam timing with RPM. I was thinking that a system could be attached to the fuel pump to shift the drive gear a few degrees with increased RPM, and perhaps it already has this?? Im working on a 4.108 which idles great and then smokes a bit at 2000 rpm and I could advance the timing, but I like the smooth low RPM operation with less clatter.

Actually the original spring works best. If anything you would want a weaker spring.. A weaker spring would allow the weights to move more quickly to a certain point. He reused a lot of worn parts.. The metering valve being one of them. I relate to it like a faucet. A new faucet takes little to turn it off. A old faucet takes more movement to shut it off.

CAV pump govenors are not high accuracy govenors, idea for non critcal work like tractor pto but rubbish for generators with big load swings. I run a perkins 3 cylinder 152 which had a stanadyne pump.. broke the input shaft and couldnt afford a replacement so fitted a CAV...theres a reason why they fit stanadyne for generators..i ended up taking the CAV apart removing the mechanical govenor completely, (because i didnt want the two govenors to be fighting each other which they did when i first fitted the electronic one) modify the input throttle to directly operate the metering valve and fit an electronic govenor (cheap one) and that works far better than even the stanadyne.it holds perfect 50Hz (im in UK) under all load conditions..id recommend either fitting a stanadyne or an electronic govenor..youll never be happy with the CAV accross the whole load range. I did my modified pump 12,000 hrs ago and its still perfectly on point. Stanadyne pumps govern really well but are incredibly expensive over here
