Clark didnt know either for sure until the night before when she thinks at the party why she let herself to get attached. All the other things he picked up were either physical attraction or respect. You can see on his face he didnt know her feelings were strong, but he can not go after her to explain.

I think Lois let him off the hook because she knew what being a reporter meant. She herself had done some cut throat things in the name of getting a story. The fact that Clark walked it back and seemed genuine in reconciliation was enough for her to forgive and forget
