"Smallville" season 5 is an epic season! We go deeper into Kryptonian lore, new DC heroes are brought into the Smallville-verse, and Brainiac (James Masters) has arrived to release Zod. Brainiac, disguised as Milton Fine, is a master deceiver. He's able to deceive Clark so easily because Clark hasn't truly taken the time to know Jor-El, a true cautionary tale.

Yeah I'm a firm believer lana should have left for Paris and not come back. Not because she gets progressively worse as the series goes on but because it would have broke Clark's heart he needed that high school heartbreak in my opinion. They could have found other temporary love interests while foreshadowed the future relationship between Clark and Lois.

I agree. I like the chemistry with Lang and Clark but i hate how Lang was written. Obviously they wanted Lois to be endgame which she should be, so why stretch out Lang and Clark 8 seasons of a ten season show

Let's not forget she did in season 4 found one love interest. In the son of another Veritas member: Jason Teague. But he's only using Lana to get what he wanted out of her family's past about her witchy aunt Isobel. So that relation interest is well, toxic. So we can't ignore that love interest.

This season is probably everyone’s favorite season. Mostly because of Clark’s Journey into following his destiny. This is The season where the friendship between Clark and Lex is falling Apart+Becoming Enemies and James Marsters is Fantastic as Brainiac. It’s hard to think of anyone else who can play Brainiac besides James Marsters+ Lionel Becoming Jor-El’s Vessel and Jonathan Kent’s Death/Funeral was pretty sad. The Kryptonian Story was Great and Lois and Chloe are also Great and the Finale with Lex Being Possessed by Zod and Clark vs Zod was Amazing. This is probably the reason why everybody loves season 5 mostly because how epic the season is.

Lana is literally introduced with a kryptonite necklace on lol she was always meant to represent the weaker side of Clark and how that relationship would keep him from embracing his true self. I loved that line about her not being the “one” from Martha. Moms always know!

Season five is awesome and so epic. It has some of the best episodes like you mentioned Reckoning, Hidden, Lexmas or my personal favorite Fragile. I completely agree, the drama between Clark-Lana- Lex is just so draining and tiresome. Lionel Luthor has always been an interesting character but I feel like season five was one of the best twists they made with this character. Loved the review as usual!

Such an underrated season by me when really it's one of the best when I break it down. Firstly just want to say Chloe is in my opinion Clarks best friend in the whole show 100%. When she finds out about Clarks powers she doesn't crumble under the weight of the news bomb like Pete or ditch him because knowing the news is too dangerous for her like he did. I like Pete but how he handled knowing the secret taints his character a little for me. Versus Chloe who knew his secret for months in season 4 and never confronted Clark with it, sure she dropped hints that she knew but she didn't corner him and say explain to me right now. She waited for him to tell her which of course never happened and in a near death situation she had to reveal she knew. And she didn't have these long term relationships with Clark like Lana and Lois did which have their up and down swings as does any relationship. Her romantic relationship with Clark was cute cause Clark couldn't even tell in season 1, Pete had to point it out. Then once he revealed he wasn't into her she had a hiccup of darkness but quickly went back to Clarks side and I think knowing the secret just tightened their bond. And finally Chloe is Clarks best friend because she doesn't flat out betray him like Lex does. From here on In the show other than a episode in season 6 I hate Lex. Mainly for stealing Clarks girl and corrupting her. Excluding Lexmas as well actually cause I really like that episode. Even though he still has Lana in that dream at least Clark and Lex are on the same page again. This is also the season where I really like to start Lionel as well. Which I always really liked you have Lex go from liked to hated and then Lionel go from hated to liked. I look at Lionel as sort of a father figure for Clark from here on out when Clark really needs it with the saddening passing of the greatest T.V dad ever for me Jonathan Kent. Even though Clark doesn't accept him right away I get flashes to season 7 writing this with Clark honoring Lionel's memory. But back to this season we're also introduced to 2 of my favorite locations in the show the Daily Planet and the Fortress of Solitude so that's very awesome. Favorite episodes of mine are the premiere thought the effects were very well done showing the aftermath of the 2nd meteor shower. Mortal cause seeing Clark as a human and yet overcoming meteor freaks is always interesting like he did in Leech. Plus Kenny Johnsons in this great actor. And Lex gets thrown in the light finally showing his true colors damn I hate him. Hidden's a very good episode as well with huge ramifications. Aqua I love all the superhero introduction episodes, Thirst, vampires are awesome, Splinter, introduces a new kind of meteor rocks which is one of my favorite parts of the whole show all the different meteor rocks. But it shows a paranoid Clark which is very scary. He actually discovers Milton Fines true identity here but sadly doesn't remember it. Since I already brought him up I'll say now I think Brainiac is one of Clarks most formidable foes in the whole show. He gets the better of Clark a lot unfortunately like in Solitude. Lexmas as I said amazing episode, Fanatic gotta love to hate crazy obsessed fans, Reckoning cause Clark finally proposes to Lana and reveals his secret to her. Vengeance, I've always loved that episode seeing Clark so brutal at first but thanks to this vigilante rediscover what makes him the greatest superhero ever his mercy among many other things. Cyborg, and Mercy cause it's Smallville's version of Saw and I love it. Oracle as well cause we see Jonathan again even if it obviously isn't really him it's like Visage in season 2 where we see Whitney again. I don't mind if it's not really him let me just pretend it's them. And finally the finale. Holy crap this finale is epic. Metropolis in utter chaos and the biggest threat up to this point Zod/Lex looking down upon them all. Kneel before Zod. Last thing I'll say I as a kid never really liked that imprisonment device the Kryptonians use where Zod traps Clark in at the end of the season where they're in like a glass cube that has the prisoners face on it as the cube rotates. But now I think it's pretty epic cause it's so unique to the Superman universe. Next seasons my favorite one of them all can't wait.

Durban my dude Im very invested in your long video format. (Epic rant on Lana!) Each season overview gets longer and you stay very engaging...keep it up 👍. Alright season 5 (looking back now) is the great halfway point. As always the opening episode of Arrival sets up this great season. Hidden (the death and resurrection of Clark) has the great heroic super jump to that missile. Lexmas is another pivotal episode in the overall Smallville story and along with Amends( Buffy season 3 Christmas episode) I watch it as a tradition during Christmas time. The 100th episode is fantastic and the funeral scene is one of the best and emotional high points in Smallville history. Leading to the build up of Braniacs master plan in the episode Vessel bringing doom and worldwide blackout known as Dark Thursday. Your right, season 5 is a cautionary tale because of how it starts with the decisions made and ends with Clark trapped in the phantom zone crystal helpless floating off into space.

I'm glad you're enjoying the longer videos! That's an epic review you gave yourself. Season 5 is a very pivotal season for the show. Lots of big choices they have big consequences. Like Lex in Lexmas. He sees what he could've had and let's power corrupt him, believing money and power is ultimate protection of happiness. Where as at the end of season 3 Lionel says, "no amount of money can save me."

Personally I think the Clana storyline is the most intense one in the whole show, because it's the most tragic, even more tragic than the father/son relationship between Lex and Lionel. It's the classic theme of wanting what you cannot have. Possibly you're not able to appreicate this because of your Christian framework, because it doesn't fit in there. It's a pity that you are not able to appreciate the intensity in scene like the one when Clark with his new super-hearing is listening to Lana crying when driving away in her car, for example, I think such moments are the most powerful in the whole show.
@ChrisDurban
@ChrisDurban 2 жыл бұрын
I see where you’re coming from. I don’t think my Christian frame work prevents me from appreciating the emotion of it, the classic wanting what you can’t have. I just don’t see why Lana and Clark even want to be together. They just constantly make each other so miserable. Clark never feels like he can share is secret with her, and after what we see in season 7 and 8 I don’t she can handle his secret. They increase the weight of the world on each other’s shoulders. Lois on the other hand…even though it still takes Clark awhile to open up to her, they laugh together they support each other through the tough times, they give strength to each other, she makes the weight on his shoulders lighter, they have fun together and they get along so well that I’m more moved by all their emotional highs and lows. But that’s just my take. Yeah, that scene where Clark here’s Lana cry is good. But for me it lacks power because they just aren’t good for each other.

@@ChrisDurban The fact that you can joke around and be easy with someone like the best of friends doesn't mean that you're in love or that you're meant for each other, actually quite on the contrary. The relationship between Clark and Lana is so difficult exactly because they ARE so deeply in love, that's why there is such tension between them already from Season 1 onwards. They suffer so much exactly BECAUSE OF this deep love, not in spite of it. Clark could have told Lana his secret if he had NOT been in love with her, because if he hadn't been, he would not have felt so responsible for her. I'm sorry, but I cannot detect any trace of chemistry or erotic tension between Clark and Lois at all, and I'm not the only one. There are other vids here on KZbin discussing the series where the creator also comments that there is no tension whatsoever between them and that their growing "love relationship" just feels forced and unbelievable. I think Clark is absolutely right in complaining about Lois being bossy and rude. She may be a cool cat - and she certainly has a lot of energy - but she is simply not his type; Lana definitely is (I don't think he would have had anything negative to say about Lana at all), which is why I still think Clark and Lana were meant to be together. And there ARE moments where they are perfectly happy together, like when rebuilding the Kent house and barn, when they are working together towards a common goal, that makes them family. I never saw this kind of deep harmony and genuine happiness in building a future together between Clark and Lois, their relationship always remained superficial-provocative and in a way childish, to the very end of the series.

Season 5 has one of my favorite episodes of the show, The Family Man rip off, Lexmas. It's a very heartbreaking episode because again, we can see a little bit more what Lex is turning into. When we compare the conclusion both characters make after having a happy life with a family, Nicolas Cage in Family Man and Lex in here, we do sorry for him. While Cage character realizes his happiness with the wealth he had wasn't even close to the one he experienced with a family and people to share with, Lex come to a conclusion completely different. His fear of losing someone he loves and having no power enough to save them talks to him so loudly he realizes that he was willing to give up all the happiness he felt and experienced in that dream.

This season is basically laying the groundwork for seasons partly 7 and 8 with this master deceiver Brainiac coming back for a few or couple of episodes. And he plays off the fears of several other people besides just Clark himself. He played off of Kara, Lana and a few times Chloe mostly but always comes back to Lex and Clark. I'm not even sure if he did try to play off of Lois' fears because she hides it well at certain times. Especially if it's the heart that conceals the fears. So I'm not sure if I can count that. But this season is definitely epic, yet intense.

Honestly I think the show picked Chloe because they’d rather have the hot blonde be Clark’s side kick which shows signs of homophobia because they didn’t want Pete to be Clark’s side kick and confident. Also as much as I loved MR, TW and looked forward to seeing TW & ED as Lois and Clark. I really believe the series should’ve ended at the end of the last episode of season four. Without a few things such as the second meteor shower, the Lana-Witch side plot, and the Mommy and Sonny Teague annoyance. And include Pete is there so that he and Lana say goodby to Clark, he has having all three crystals and goes to begin his training. It was also too soap opera-ish

I have one little negative about this season. Is that the fact of how Clark is so obsessed with becoming a human instead of focusing on his destiny and that doesn’t really work for me. Because the people accept Clark off who he is and not off being very different/ the same as Human.

I struggled a bit with this season. Especially when the Lex/Lana thing was happening. I had a hard time believing in that relationship. It didn't seem natural for Lana to be in a relationship with someone who tried to manipulate her into thinking she was delusional. I also had to work against my expectations of certain characters and abilities. Like how Brainiac is pretty much a knock off T1000 instead of the normal way we typically see him with the 3 dots. Also the design for Cyborg. I understand that it wouldn't look convincing if they had a proper costume for him. However, I would've preferred something instead of just saying he has synthetic skin. A major part of Cyborg's character is that he doesn't look normal anymore. I also want to defend the Lana heat vision moment. I don't think it's a reflection of her character. From the context of the episode, when Lana is a vampire her hormones were higher as well. As if they live in constant tension. Overall, I enjoyed this season but I wasn't certain about some choices that were made.

Great thoughts. When I was watching this show for the first time all my Superman knowledge either came from the Christopher Reeve movies and the Lois and Clark TV show. So season 5 was my first introduction to Brainiac so I had no expectations for his character. Same with Cyborg. I've caught up on comics and animated movies since then so I see where you're coming from. But that's why those things hit me differently. I never liked the Lana Lex stuff. But then I don't like how they did her character. Very good and reasonable defense for her heat vision.

But the biggest Negative of this season is Lana Lang once again. I can’t stand her character anymore. I feel like that this show is repeating the same templet in format with the Clark and Lana stuff. Where in season 1 Clark has a crush on Lana. Season 2 Clark is ending up with Lana. Season 3 Clark is breaking up with Lana. Season 4 Clark has a crush on Lana. Season 5 Clark ends up with Lana and breaks up with Lana. It is really irritating to me and it’s really pissing me off. And to be honest if everyone who watch this show thought that the in the fourth season of the show thought that the relationship between Lana and Jason the High school coach was creepy and terrible. In this season and the next season is even worst. Where Lana is with Lex and it’s just a nightmare because of how Lex is like 25 years old and Lana is like 19 years old and that’s really creepy and that’s why Lana Lang wil always be the worst character of the entire show from beginning to the end.

Sorry! 😬🤦🏾‍♂️😅 I mean the first half is vert strong I agree with Fine/Brainiac, Clark and Lex’s rift beginning in their friendship, the 100th episode, etc. But my god the second half was some of the worst material of the series! All these terrible fillers and knock offs of popular films; making it seem like the writers had no idea how to continue the show after Pa Kent’s death. This is when the Lana/Clark saga became beyond annoying n just insufferable angst more than even their high school days. Too depressing, too morbid with only the last two episodes worth watching because now Fine comes back n they rush Zoe’s arrival. Also, Clark should have stayed in college to study journalism but they make him into some pathetic college dropout that only focuses on Lana! Ahhhhh! Sorry again! 😅😂🤣🤦🏾‍♂️😩

Season 5 isn't as bad as S6 or S7. But I find it to be an extremely overrated season. One of my biggest pet peeves is actually the senator race. Johnathan was always about anonymity and being a low key man to protect his family. He even risks death in S2's Vortex to stop Nixon. But suddenly he has political ambition and doesn't seem to care about exposing Clark to potential public scrutiny and government attention. This was completely out of character. I actually found the ending of Hereafter in S3 to be a much more shocking and fitting death scenario. If he had to go I wish it would've been on the farm with him providing for his family.
@ChrisDurban

You make some solid points. I feel like Jonathan running for senator, and taking that risk of exposing Clark’s secret, is him wanting to end the rule of those like the Luthors. I think in some ways he wants to impact the world like his son does. Other than that I love season 5 for Brainiac. I love it when Clark dies and comes back, and the death of Jonathan changes everything. Season 5 has got some great moments.
