Why do you do 9971 instead of just 971?

At one the Madtown Showdown off-season events, we enter 3 "teams" from 971 Spartan Robotics. One team uses the competition robot from the previous season, one team uses the duplicate practice robot, and a 3rd team uses a robot built as a summer project led by the students. So with 3 robots, we need bumpers with 3 numbers, and we use 971, 9971 and 8971.
