Once you download the app, it walks you through the very easy set up. The clarity, and range is awesome. I am thinking seriously about adding another camera or two to my 3 camera system. The price is lower than a lot of comparable systems.

Oh my god - Smart Home ideas for people in smaller apartments that eventually actually need to move their stuff?! O.O F'KN FINALLY! I don't know what it is with other content creators but...they all recommend rather "stationary" products. I live in a 29 squaremeters flat and I might move again...and again, and again - and I'd love to bring my smart home stuff with me. Especially the light switch stuff is what I am looking for - this is amazing. Please make more videos featuring products that are not "stationary" - as in, more products that you can take with you when you move. I might still plant a lightstrip eventually - but other stuff, like my switches and bulbs and sockets, I would love to take that stuff out and return the apartment into it's "vanilla state" when I move out. So yeah, please make more videos featuring those products, thanks! ^.^

Hi Reed. In answer to the ring alarm and the Amazon Echo, you can use either another echo device to announce arm ring in home or away mode. Have a 5 second delay, and then announce the voice code to disarm the alarm. There is a security flaw in that, but that's down to your own choice. I read about this on the internet. Regards, Dave

Interesting. I could see arming it that way but disarming it seems a bit risky. Thanks for the tip though!

Check Remo+ DoorCam/DoorCam2, and BodyGuardz Portable Over The Door Camera. Some landlords do not even allow renters to swap peepholes. They don't have knock detection, though, since a lot of apartments do not have doorbells, and knock detection is a big plus (it's just a vibration sensor).

They make door mounts for ring type cameras now. Works great. I have some smart plugs and will get some door/window sensors when I move soon. Agreed. I was just rambling on about that. That alexa/amazon is always trying to make a sale and iOS is always charging a monthly. Yet somehow android/google can give us the same things for free. My way of showing my appreciation for that is purchasing Google / Android items. If Android/Google can stay in Business without charging .99 cents or more monthly for photo storage. Google / Android also has no problem playing a whole song for me if I want to hear it on KZbin or whatever else Android / Google offers to play it on while Alexa will give you a little snippet of it and then direct you to Amazon for you to buy it if you want to hear the whole thing. Sorry, no thank you, Google gives me my photo storage for free and by the way I have tons of photos. And Google / Android will play a song for me for free in full as many times as I want to hear it. So yes I'm here to support Google Android and have a Google home. How is it that Google is very wealthy company without charging for all those things? We know that Amazon and apple are also filthy rich. Honestly if you charge 99 cents a month to a million plus customers Apple then yes I consider you stealing. My sister now has to pay $2 plus a month for the amount of photo she has. Ridiculous! Rip off! Go Google or go home. Go Google home ;-)

I'm in a mixed-income building with middle and lower-income social assistance tenants in the building. One of my neighbors set up the peephole camera on the door face and the next day one of the other tenants on the floor attacked it with a baseball bat. He said he didn't want this person spying on him and knowing who was coming on the floor and to what apartment. Many Eastern Europeans and persons from repressive regimes can have extremely negative feelings about surveillance as well. The attacking tenant Who was a member of a strict religious community also said that they were stealing his image and his soul and door camera tenant would go to hell. He threatened to smash this person's head in with the baseball bat if he ever put another camera in the hallway again. He ended up kicking the door in and entered the apartment threatening the tenant directly. Luckily, security arrived before the tenant was harmed. Cultural issues are another key factor in deciding to place cameras in a communal area such as a hallway. Even if you exit on a street, it has become quite common to steal the camera or spray paint it if you're a porch pirate stealing packages. So, I cannot recommend any solution that leaves a visible camera pointing into the hallway or externally accessible. It is a health and safety risk. There is a model of peephole camera that sits on the inside of the door and replaces the actual peephole that is available on amazon. Many buildings will not permit tenants to mount external cameras or alter the peephole in the door on their doors as it is a violation of federal Canadian and municipal privacy legislation. The landlord can place cameras in the hallways and communal areas for overall tenant security because they own the building and, in your lease, typically they have a paragraph or two about being surveilled in communal areas and what happens to that footage. You typically have to initial agreement to these clauses.

FYI the Kwikset Smartcode Connect locks allow you to easily rekey the lock to your existing key. You insert a small tool and then the key then turn it a couple of times and it uses the old key. So landlords can still get in. They have the 800 and 900 series that completely replace the lock and have a keypad outside or they have conversion kits like August that just replace the interior. Best part is you can get them in zigbee or z-wave, whichever fits your system better. I use the 800 series with the smart lock app in SmartThings and have set to auto lock after 10 min as well as in other routines. Set them in scenes and Alexa will control them.

the peep hole camera is interesting, especially when most people aren’t pushing the doorbell but knocking instead. but i don’t trust ring when it comes to privacy + subscription. perhaps someday the competitors will make a version that stores locally without a subscription and in at least 2k res. a likely candidate for something like that could be eufy. but a raspberry pi open source kit would be even better.

Great video! Do you have an idea for an appartment friendly (no electrician required) smart ceiling light in a room with no overhead lighting? I think it's a fairly common problem in appartments
@fartherdude50624 жыл бұрын
Well you could get a smart bulb to use. You can control brightness etc and turn it “off” even if the switch is in the on position. You could also just not use your overhead lights and switch to lamps or even light strips. Me and my brother rent an apartment and the only overhead lights we use are the bathrooms and the kitchen. You’d be surprised how little you need to use the overhead lights. So you could have smart switches for the lamps or strips and smart bulbs for the overhead lighting. It’s kinda expensive but you could keep them for a long time and reuse them when you move out.

Hi Kira I should have mentioned it in this video so I apologize. I briefly mention how to do it deep in my doorbell video kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqjcZYWLisaeic0 and I can explain how to do it. In the Alexa app add the Ring skill if hasn't been added already. Then also in the Alexa app go to your "devices" and select the ring doorbell you want to automatically display the live feed on the echo show. You will see an option for "Announcement Devices" click on that and select your echo show. Then go back and select "Doorbell Press Announcements" to be on. That should make it work. If it doesn't work some people had to remove and re-add the Ring skill but it should just work. I appreciate your support!

Hi Reed, thanks for this info! I do have a question: I would like to get a peephole camera for my apartment. My manual peephole is integrated into my door knocker, so there isn't space on the outside of the door for the Ring to fit. Ideally, I would like a smart camera that mounts on the *interior* of my door, and simply looks through the existing peephole - and the exterior would look identical to all my neighbors' doors. To a bad guy, my door would blend in to all the others and not stand out as something interesting. Do you have any recommendations for interior-only smart peephole cameras? My googling has come up very dry.

@@louisiannef3122 I did not find anything, sorry. I ended up moving out of the apartment and into a rental house shortly after I wrote my comment. I put up a Reolink camera system covering all sides of the exterior. I do highly recommend Reolink if you're looking for standard security cameras.

Thanks so much for this! You've given me some awesome ideas for my apartment that I'm sure to love... and will probably annoy my girlfriend, but that's ok! 🤔🤣
