At a time where our government (Mauritius) is shoving down our throats ‘smart cities’ that will wipe out the remaining agricultural land of our already small island, your presentation outlines the essential. Thank you for the arguments, will cite you in my article.

I love the "No School" answer, and the "more sofa" is ingenious. The two girl dancing is so sweet, Dr. Dohler should had put them both on stage. By the way, what's the title of this talk?

Thanks :). The title is "Smart Cities - The Untold Story: Big Data, Open Data & Citizen Engagement". It is strange they didn't put this up.

Mischa Dohler Yeah, it would be great (and better for SEO) if they entitled the video

I was touched by your comments on the broken value chain and the fact that the infrastructure element is pushed to the limit in procurement processes. That's one reason I hate the term "The Cloud". Because something is complex, we "outsource" this complexity, we give it a simplistic name, we start thinking of it as a commodity and we subsequently squeeze the life out of the people that provide that very, very important element in the value chain. Too much simplistic thought and PowerPoint at executive levels!!!

I simply can't believe on what I have heard about citizen engagement in London. Maybe the reason is that things in the city are working perfectly and everyone is happy? Maybe there is nothing to change or improve? Well, consider what is going on in Brazil nowadays: the downturn of the economy, diseases spreading like the Black Death in the Europe in the 14th century, government ripping off the country wealth with no mercy, and so on so forth. In the mean time, the citizens are on the streets (millions) dancing and celebrating in the carnival. When one try to engage the citizens in demonstrations against the situation only a few citizens show up in the streets (because they are busy, or need to spare time to relax). At least in this country we have to develop "smart citizen" before we try to build smart cities.

London is one of the most chaotic cities in the world. Just look at the busses and the bus drivers during the rush hours. Too many things to complain, too long working hours and little free time, and so I bet they don't know where to start!

Great video, I enjoyed the balance of humor and seriousness :) but I still don't know what open/big data is or how to use it for better citizen engagement (and I mean it)

Mischa Dohler , may be you should have interviewed people in cafe's or stores where people are a bit Relaxing not in a hush hush hurry!! Then instead of 3 There would have been 50 odd ppl speaking up in patience...

I have done this, actually; only part of the interviewing is filmed. The success was indeed a little higher, but not much. You know, I will give it another try and see how it goes :).

Hey Dona, yes, the shift from Big Data to Big Action will need to be the paradigm of the 21st century; otherwise, we won't make it to the end of the century.
