I don't use a lot of dimmers. A lot of people have asked me about smart dimmers. This is a review of the Shelly Dimmer. It works great. It is small and works with a physical push button, but most importantly it integrates wonderfully with Home Assistant. There is a custom integration in the HA Community Store called Shelly for Hass, and it works perfectly!

As Bulgarian, I'm really proud Shelly is taking off and the work of this company did present solutions for home geeks and even professional use in a such a convenient way. As industrial electrician in the uk I'm doing a lot of automation of gates, motorised bolards and access systems so I loved the fact that a shelly device can add additional functionality and be easily integrated in to an existing systems where WiFi is present. I would be happy if shelly start doing devices with ethernet sockets or the ability of such a socked to be connected to a device because sometimes is much easier for me too pool cat5 or 6 compared to extending WiFi range and doing meshes and will be much cheaper for the client as wifi it's not convenient for just one device in the middle of the field.

Nice to see that this will work with a 3-way or 4-way switch setup, as I was hoping it would be able to do that. I have an idea about time-of-day dimming for a couple of places where I have those kinds of switches. I'd also be interested in seeing how they would work in a place like a bathroom at night, so folks don't get blinded in there.

Good advice about the dimmer - I just came back from Chicago where some of the guys still use incancescents - so the Shelly dimmer is likely to be useful. Here in the UK I now ONLY use LEDs and never use the dimmable versions, partly because they tend to be more expensive and partly as I use a lot of LED STRIP which of course can be dimmed by Tasmota. Nice to know the dimmer is out there.

excellent video as always ... just as a side note you do not need to use the app to get it onto your network. When you first power up the shelly device you can do a search for the WiFi AP of the device and connect to it. Then you can go to the devices built in web page and make changes to all the settings there (wifi, mqtt, calibration, time zones ....etc)

I have 10 of these dimmers and will be getting more. You said they are designed for momentary push button switches. That is true if you want local dimmer control by holding the switch. But if you want to use a standard toggle switch that is also supported but you would need to use app or HA to dimm it. After much research and testing I found that Leviton 1256-W is the best switch to use with these dimmers. It allows push and hold up for brighter and push and hold down for dimmer. Or push either direction for toggle on/off. That way you don’t get frustrated when you push and hold and it goes the wrong direction of brightness. Also this switch allows for 3 way, 4 way and more controls. I.e. multiple switches for each dimmer circuit.

ttdrj I recommend using the “edge” choice for your situation. It will toggle the light state with a single flip no matter the current state and previous app usage. The other options won’t do that.

I would like decorator switches on dimmable 3 way lights. How do I go about this?
@neilbrookins8428
@neilbrookins8428 3 жыл бұрын
@@rychei5393 if you can get decorator switches that have a spring return, then you can set the Shelly switch type to push button. Otherwise with a standard decorator switch just set Shelly to edge mode. But in the latter case no dimming available at the switch. As for the wiring method- just wire hot to the switch and the return from the switch goes to the switch input on the Shelly. You can put as many switches in parallel as desired for the push button type or use standard three way with traveler wires for three way. It’s the same as three way traditional but the “load” is the Shelly switch input instead of the light.

Hi @@neilbrookins8428 , thanks for your comment here. What you describe is exactly what I'm trying to do. I want to install the dimmer behind my toggle switch. I checked the connections with the multimeter and eventough it's connected correctly it doesnt work. I also tried connecting the switch to live wire, but that didnt work either.

I hope you can do a Followup video with other features this dimmer has. My favorite is the calibration. This feature fixes the issue where some led lights dimm slowly at first and then quickly near the minimum brightness. i.e. are not linear control. After enabling the calibration feature, the controls are perfectly linear. So a light that is pulling 14watts at 100% bright will pull exactly 7 watts at 50% bright. And at 25% bright pulls 3.5 watts. I’ve never seen another device that has this feature. Also the temperature and power measurement features are nice to have too. Let’s also not leave out its limitations. Dimmer only supports 1.1 amps max. This is a lot less than the Shelly 1 which is 16 amps.

But I’m having issues after setting up in HA with the Shelly HACS integration. The entity shows up, and works with some automations. After a little bit of time it becomes an orphaned entity and not usable through HA. It’s still accessible through the Shelly app. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling the integrations and the HACS integration as well. Any suggestions?

@DrZzs Is this available outside of US yet or is it US only atm? Dimmers are great for giving that slight fade in and fade out. Also great for wakeup alarms and for "Movie" style scenes to dim lights as the movie plays. Also great if you use motions sensors for night lights. I'd be lost without my dimmable globes now. I saw another channel review the Shelly dimmer and it failed badly on Incandescent globes, but worked really well with dimmable LED's which is pretty weird. Most are the opposite. This was a while ago and guessing it was a beta version at the time. Is the Shelly integration based around the Cloud component or is it based on local control? Edit: Ignore that last question. You answered it for me lol :) That addon is freaking awesome. It has all the information you need to create any automation you want using all the Shelly information available.

If you find you have so many WiFi devices that your network can't handle it, go and add a Ubuiqiti AP to your network and create a dedicated network for your automation stuff. I have over 70 WiFi devices, including sensors and switches on an ISP supplied Router and not having any issue. As long as you have enough IP Addresses and there is no client connection limitations, these are fine as they only transmit really small amounts of data.

Hi , after posting my question, I found your video on the shelly1 / sonoff mini comparision were you pointed out the issue with shelly not holding the wire tight, after playing around few hours I came up with a little technique to make the shelly better hold the wires, Just bend the top bare wire so it has an L shape, then push the wire inside in a way that 1 part of the l goes behind the latch upwards, then when you close the screw it will hold really firmly... I never done a video, but I might try to show this as it might help. Thank doc for your great vids,

So- we cannot add these to existing switches? In US?

I don't think so. I'll have to poke around the house and see if I have an old dimmer switch in a box somewhere I can test with.

DrZzs thanks doc! I looked up the Shelly 1’s. Those will do just fine for me. I don’t really need a dimmer.

All those decimal digits are some amazing *precision*, there is no indication of amazing *accuracy*. IMO it's pointless to display more than one or two decimal places, there is no way the measurement is accurate enough to make use of that degree of precision.

I would like, if you let us know on every video, if you had been paid for making a product review or if you bought it on your own
@DrZzs
@DrZzs 4 жыл бұрын
That's a fair request. I've never been paid to do a review, but I also rarely have to buy a device. The price of the device isn't nearly enough to pay for the effort of making a review video. Companies send me a lot of stuff for free. I've got a closet full of stuff I may never use. I will give you my honest opinion, but I'm generally pretty positive, so don't expect me to lambast some device. My Ol'Gran used to tell me "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." That's my policy on reviews too. Green Bar on the Thumbnail indicates a pure Review video. Blue Bar indicates something more of a project including something with Home Automation or LEDs, or (soon) Electric Car conversion.

I wish more manufacturers were like the guys from Shelly, especially the big players. With Shelly it's like: here you have fully functional device with our software, but feel free to hack it however you want for your needs versus with the big guys, especially Google: Oh you wanna use the device for something more than we told you, without our app and our ecosystem? BLOCKED!

BEWARE: As of yet, you can not flash tasmota on these as the dimming is done by a seperate MCU and Shelly do not support the DIY community. Progress is being made but it's not there yet.
@DrZzs
@DrZzs 4 жыл бұрын
Good to know. With the ShellyforHASS component we don't need to flash it with Tasmota. You don't have to connect to their cloud and you can use the device perfectly in HA. I would say that Shelly is very supportive of the DIY community. They were the first big company (that I know of) to make MQTT a part of their stock firmware. They did that totally at the request of, and to support, DIY'rs like us.

@@DrZzs I wanted Tasmota as their firmware is not as mature as tasomta. Great work by both shelly & shelyforhass. It will only get better. I thing I did notice was my power moitoring was slow to update. Make sure your ports are open for COAP
