Huh, cool. Been using Blender for 3 years and never heard of the group instances. That seems really useful.

its really great! You can even layer them... i sometimes use that for foliage - use instances of a leaf, bunch them together into a small cluster of leaves and then bunch those together into a huge array... and it all uses just the single instance

Thanks for the tips. Great for newbies like me. :)

Very nice, thanks. I never knew that about groups and creating new instances of a group. One thing for newbies (and forgetful people like me) to watch out for is that if there's a material on the object then it's the same material when you use the shallow copy so when you change it on one the others get the same change; I keep forgetting to click that number thing (users) when I want them different.

You can change the position of the pivot if you go into the object settings under group there is a triangular button. If you click it you can select set pivot to 3d cursor or something like that

Are you sure you've got the deep and shallow copy terminology right? In programming we use the same terms, but the other way around. If you copy a list, but not the elements inside it, so that the new list references the same objects as the original one, that's a shallow copy. If you copy a list and all the elements inside it, so that the elements in the new list are also copies of the ones in the original list, that's a deep copy. So I would have expected that in the context of 3D modeling, copying an object and all the vertices inside it would be a deep copy as well. While copying an object, but not the vertices inside it, so that the new object references the same vertices, would be a shallow copy.
