LEADIN:
Environmentally friendly living is the future, according to LG Electronics.
It's showcasing an energy-efficient, connected smart home at this year's IFA Berlin tech show.
STORYLINE:
Is this the home of the future?
LG Electronics thinks so.
It's brought its SMART Cottage to Berlin's IFA consumer electronics show.
The mini-home is just 37 square metres, but aims to provide a comfortable space for its inhabitants.
A switch of a button and the blinds go up.
The cottage recognises its owner is home by connecting to their cell phone.
It then automatically adjusts to the person's preferences - for example by changing the temperature.
An app controls many of the home's functions. Users can check for security alerts from external cameras and motion sensors, change the lighting, and monitor their energy consumption.
This prefabricated home is made using low-carbon steel materials to reduce the environmental impact of construction.
"The Smart Cottage is a sustainable house that prioritises energy efficiency in integrating the services and home appliances into a smart space. It is not only optimised for the production, storage and consumption cycle of energy, but also the prefabricated design of the house adds to its efficiency in terms of the architectural construction," says Lee Hyang Eun, managing director of the Customer Experience Innovation Division at LG Electronics.
Energy consumption is at the heart of the design.
Solar panels on the roof generate 15 kilowatts of electricity per day.
Any extra can be stored for future usage or sold back to the grid.
IFA Berlin is Europe's biggest consumer electronics show.
It runs from 1-5 September this year.
