Welcome back! Great video to start off the year. As others have mentioned, I would also be curious on a room assistant video (looks like you might need raspi's for each room where you'd like the Room Assistant functionality as I think I saw one sitting next to the "banished" Echo Show 5 in the office?). Also, after watching your video on the Whole house lutron switch, I started purchasing these for my basement as/when I find a good deal (as they are super expensive otherwise and there isn't a way to buy them in bulk to get good discount). Unfortunately, the Lutron switches seem a bit cheap to touch (I realize cheap or not can be subjective). Would you recommend the TP-Link Kasa switches just as much - especially if we don't care for the Pico remote functionality tied in with the corresponding wall mounted Lutron switch? Would also appreciate if you could elaborate on how you automate the Garage lights - is it just via the ring door sensor (which I do not currently own)? I currently have my garage lights plugged into smart outlets as well and would love to automate. I tried with a motion sensor but its hard to find a spot in the garage that has visibility to the entire garage and if I am in a spot the motion sensor can't see, then it would turn off the lights after a while (I know I can tweak things a bit programmatically but have not yet set up Home Assistant for that 😀). Thanks.

You considered more advanced scripting for the smart motion sensor, maybe only trigger every odd number of motions detected so it switches on only when someone get in the room or maybe a pair of sensors to determine people entering / exiting the room

@@topperdude2007 Thanks! Yes that's another Raspberry Pi Zero for Room Assistant in the office. Good eye! I agree that the Lutron switches seem a bit cheap to the touch. That was pretty much my only complaint when I compared many light switches a while ago kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKWZmZaJec1krac From my own experience and what others have said, the Kasa dimmer switches seem to work well. I am not sure how well they would work if you were going to install 50+ Kasa dimmer switches. Since WiFi might be less reliable but if you were adding some to save on cost then I think it can be a good move. I also am buying Lutron switches when they are on sale every time I see them. For the garage lights I would add a contact sensor on the door and when the door opens, have an automation turn on the smart outlet. Then in that same automation have a delay for 10 minutes (or how ever long you want) and then turn off the lights. I'm using the Ring contact sensor and it's using an Alexa Routine for triggering those automations. You could also use some ZigBee contact sensors with an Echo 4th Gen, SmartThings, Hubitat...etc.

We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version kzbin.infoUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.

Great video as always! Great to see another Smart Home Expert who has a dog who is Alexa trained! I have a 150lb bloodhound who knows when its time to go to bed when I tell Alexa, to turn off the TV at night, & he tries to answer Alexa whenever my parents call. He stands by the one in the living room & cries until he can see their faces. He also knows when the backyard gate is opened & runs to the kitchen window to see who enters! Now if I could only get her open the doors to let him out to go potty & back in.... Also in the next year I want to see that network rack in an enclosure with some smart home sensors for temperature & security! :)

Or you can just create a scene when you power on TV using broadlink or switchbot hub or a smart remote to skip motion detection to the sensor between specific hours if you like and activate the sensor again with a power off scene of your TV.

Comments like these often make me realize the differences in appliances all over the world. Where I live (The Netherlands) it's practically impossible to buy a non-smart TV. It has been for years. Any TV you'll buy has the ability to connect to WiFi and thus to HomeAssistant, disregarding the need for power consumption sensors. Just check the state of the TV in HA. It's amazing really.

Absolutely great automations. My unique concern is: With so many things from different brands and suppliers, I may have to end up building a "SERVER" room the way you did. This is the unique point that puts me off for so many stuff at the moment. Plus the amount of different apps you would have to use your phone and house, jezzz.
@christianramsvik77
@christianramsvik77 2 жыл бұрын
There are some ways to avoid having all kinds of apps; I have that exact concern; I don't want to use a dozen apps to control different things. I am currently playing with Athom Homey that installs an app (for integrating the hardware, really) for each vendor, but you can control all the things from the homey app, be it IKEA bulbs, Philiips Hue bulbs, Aquara sensors etc etc. I have stuff from a few different vendors. It speaks Zigbee, Z-wave, WiFi, Bluetooth, 433MHz, IR and possibly more "languages", and is meant to be able to replace all the hubs from the different vendors. It works fine WITH the hubs too though; I still keep my Philips Hue hub. It has some really nice automation features (flows) as well. I think it is very similar to Home Assistant, but without having to set up the linux box etc. And lots of nice apps already on the list. You can read more about it on athom.com (I have no affiliation, I'm just a happy user so far)

I had a very similar problem your motion sensor issue in the living room. My solution I added an automation in home assistant that when the tv is playing the lights automatically turn off and set a helper state to watching then the reverse for pause. Then in my motion light automation I set a condition using the helper. It's a super nice quality of life automation plus people think it's really cool when you press play and pause and the lights toggle that way.
@ntdnguyen85
@ntdnguyen85 2 жыл бұрын
2:36 There is a simple solution to prevent that too. I have similar issue where my kids are napping and I do not want the automation to run. Make a virtual switch and maybe call it "Movie Switch". Now either automate the turning on of that virtual switch by monitoring the power usage of the projector or turning it on via voice command/routine "it's movie time", etc. Then have all the lights/switches you do not want to go on while a movie is running to check whether that switch (Movie Switch) is on (indicating movie is playing). Voila, lights automation stop working while movie is playing. To take it another step further. You can automate light strip on floor to only work when movie is on thus lighting up a path when people need to get up for bathroom breaks.

Well USB ports in an outlet isn’t good, mainly because they are almost always USB-A ports, which means they can’t support power delivery, which means they’ll be slow for anything with a sizeable battery. USB-C PD can output over a 100W of power.

Finally an updated house tour! The Samsung frame tv should integrate into home assistant, I have my Samsung added to HA with the integration and I set a condition for my living room motion sensor to only turn the lights on if the television is off. This way if the television is on and someone walks in, the lights don’t turn on. You may want to give that a shot….also in my other rooms since HA doesn’t have the option to determine if a switch was turned on by motion or by the Caseta switch, I set a condition that makes sure the light is off before triggering the motion command and when the light is activate by motion I have it set to 93%. I use the 93% for the turn off condition so the motion does not turn off a light that is set to any other brightness.

Great video. I started working on my home about 6 months ago. Replaced all of my switches with Lutron. I have my floor lamps, night stand lamps and TVs on Eve Plugs, Circle View Doorbell, motion sensors in all the bathrooms, laundry room and garage. HomePod mini in every room and garage. Just ordered some Lutron shades. I'm all Homekit. I would like to get smart washer and dryer, but I haven't seen any that work with Homekit. Hopefully Matter will solve this problem. Once again, great video.

For motion sensor issue while watching movies I suggest having Amazon routine, like you do, but to have it automatically turn off the sensor and turn it on after the show/ movie. Like a movies or relax mode

Yeah I ended up adding something like that after this video. There are still situations where I need to turn around the motion sensor, but it's definitely nice to make it less annoying during movie time!

Quick fix (if your setup allows for it) set the Family Room motion sensor to only turn on the lights if the TV is Off - I added this simple condition for my house in Home Assistant, made everything a heck of a lot better. Ended up putting all my automations in HA, but had to make every automation a single fire-and-forget (i.e. 1 to turn lights on, another to turn it off) but that's due to other eccentricities of mine (Server running HA can update whenever, sometimes restarting HA and therefore breaking running automations). So in my case I can also set a condition for motion-sensor-driven lights to not turn on a light that's already turned on, so that they don't reset the dimmer brightness if I've manually changed it

It makes me very happy to see your light switch facia screws all turned the same way 👍. 2 things people should know, toilet paper should go over the top of the roll and flat head screws should be horizontal like the horizon. 🤣

Em okay, now THAT is a very automated house :D Currently i'm using my smarthome pretty basically: Turning on and off lights via homekit, avm light bulbs and outlets which are usually not homekit compatible. But a Raspberry Pi is running homebridge so they can talk to each other
